Validation Of A Methodology For Predicting Yield Acceleration Of Rock Blocks, Madison Haydn-Myer
Validation Of A Methodology For Predicting Yield Acceleration Of Rock Blocks, Madison Haydn-Myer
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Rock slope stability is a critical concern in seismically active regions, where earthquakes can trigger sudden and hazardous failures. Predicting these failures is challenging due to the complex interactions between seismic loading and geological characteristics. This study proposes a simplified analytical model to predict yield acceleration based on the forces acting upon a block just before sliding initiates. A key parameter in this equation is the friction acting on the bottom surface of the block. As rock blocks are commonly formed by the intersection of sets of subparallel fractures known as joints, and the roughness and other features of those …

By comparing the cumulative oil production with the OOIP, fields with significant remaining reserves were identified. Data for this project was obtained from the Montana Geological Society (MGS) and the Montana Board of Oil and Gas (MBOG), which provided comprehensive information on reservoir properties, fluid characteristics, …
Modeling Copper Biogeochemistry In Continental Environments: 0 – 93 °C, Paul Goldsborough Helfrich
Modeling Copper Biogeochemistry In Continental Environments: 0 – 93 °C, Paul Goldsborough Helfrich
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Microbiomes are intertwined with copper chemistry through both toxin and trace nutrient interactions. We produced and examined nineteen metagenomes from a creek recovering from historic copper mining to investigate how anthropogenic contamination shapes microbial community structure and functional potential. We then incorporated the metagenomic profiles and concurrently collected geochemical context into multivariate models to examine correlations between habitat geochemistry and microbial ecology. Residual copper and wastewater inputs alter stream habitability across seasonal gradients. We complimented initial analyses with new insights from high temperature environments. Combined dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), temperature, pH, and silica stress constrain photosynthesis in hydrothermal features. Geochemical …

As a society, we’ve exhausted an extreme amount of fossil fuels and put an overwhelming strain on Earth’s natural resources. From this, it is critical to think about the successful future of our planet and ourselves by developing energy devices such as all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs). These devices offer a greener and more efficient alternative to power our daily lives, such as electric vehicles (EVs), portable electronics, medical devices, grid-scale energy storage, and aerospace/aviation. ASSLIBs are an excellent alternative to liquid-state batteries, which pose dangerous safety concerns (e.g., flammability, electrolyte leakage, etc.). These ASSLIBs are known to have generally high …

Localized Multivariate Statistical Assessment Of United States Construction Labor Shortages, Ahmed Shiha, Islam H. El-Adaway
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Craft labor shortage is a persistent challenge facing the construction industry across various markets. The historically low geographic mobility of construction labor exacerbates and localizes labor shortages. Several research efforts relied on subjective evaluations to quantify the existence of labor shortages on a national level. As such, there is a lack of empirical quantification of labor shortages at different geospatial levels. This paper fills this knowledge gap. To this end, the authors adopted a methodology that encompassed: (1) conducting a literature review to identify and collect national-level and subnational indicators that explain the changes in labor supply and demand; (2) …

Preparing ultrahigh-performance seawater-sea sand concrete (UHPSSC) to mitigate the scarcity of freshwater and river sand resources has generated considerable recent research interest. However, the deterioration mechanisms of UHPSSC under the effect of abrasion and erosion remain unstudied. In this paper, the underwater steel ball method was conducted to evaluate the impact of seawater, sea sand, steel fiber, and seawater abrasion on the abrasion resistance of UHPSSC. Then the stress erosion models of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) were constructed to investigate the degradation mechanisms of UHPSSC under the effect of external stress and seawater erosion. The results show that the application of seawater …

This dissertation explores two distinct topics centered on mathematical models in probability theory and materials science. The first part investigates a series of functions derived from an adaptive algorithm designed to address the score-based secretary problem, a classic challenge in probability theory. This problem involves making immediate decisions to select the best candidate from a sequence of interviews. The algorithm aims to maximize the probability of selecting the optimal candidate based on observed scores. We prove two fundamental analytic properties of this sequence of functions as a theoretic support of the algorithm: first, the functions in the sequence each possess …

Effect Of Moderate Decrease In Contractility On Epithelial Cell-Cell Contacts Under External Stretch, Saika Sharmin
Effect Of Moderate Decrease In Contractility On Epithelial Cell-Cell Contacts Under External Stretch, Saika Sharmin
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Epithelial tissues are characterized by extensive cell–cell contacts and often subject to stretch during normal function. Cell-cell contact adhesion strength maintains mechanical continuity from cell to cell. Mechanical forces exerted by cells via actomyosin contractility are known to strengthen cell-cell adhesions to a certain extent. While it is known that a large decrease in contractility causes cell-cell contact rupture due to weakened adhesions, it is unclear how a moderate reduction in contractility affects cell-cell junction stability. Here, we studied how a moderate inhibition of non-muscle myosin II (NMII) affects the integrity of epithelial cell-cell contacts, especially when subject to the …

Achieving carbon neutrality is a critical yet elusive goal for many cities, hindered by limited understanding of the relationship between building emissions and their surroundings. To address this challenge, we present a generalizable open science framework that integrates building energy-consumption data, multi-modal geospatial inputs and graph deep learning to quantify building operating emissions and their links to urban form and socio-economic factors. Applying this approach to five cities with diverse climates and planning contexts—Melbourne, New York City (Manhattan), Seattle, Singapore and Washington DC—we demonstrate that our models explain 78.4% of the variation in building operating carbon emissions across cities, achieving …
Reinforcement Learning And Virtual Human Animation: A Novel Approach To Data-Driven Animation, Portraying Dynamic, Flexible Human-Like Behaviours, Vihanga Gamage

Virtual characters require animation capable of portraying dynamic, context-sensitive human-like behaviours. Several approaches to generating such animation have been developed, but each carries limitations. Motion capture can produce high-fidelity animation but is expensive and ill-suited to systems that must respond in real time. Physics-based reinforcement learning (RL) enables flexible, dynamic behaviour portrayal, yet relies on simulation feedback signals that are unavailable for social gestures. Supervised approaches can learn social behaviours from motion capture data but yield agents with limited flexibility and generalisation.
This thesis presents RLAnimate, a model-based, data-driven RL framework for character animation that enables a single agent to …
