Single-Use Ph Sensor Via A Coplanar Ph Glass Electrode Design, Cd Feng, Robert Garrahy

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements

The elimination of high temperature and high pressure sterilization processes by the advent of Single-Use-Systems (SUS) opens up a new era for the glass electrode based pH sensor. Without the requirement for pretreatment of a pH glass electrode under high temperature and pressure, the classic pH sensing technology delivers a more reliable, more rugged, and more accurate pH measurement. However, the innovative and unique SUS practice also posts new challenges, such as the long shelf-life requirement and the limitation of access to the sensor for calibration once on site,.

Process Intensification In Biomanufacturing Driven By Advances In Single Use Technologies, Stefan Schmidt

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements

Single use technologies now represent the state of the art in biomanufacturing, but still the full potential of a broad application has not been tapped yet. One strategy that captures most of disposable benefits is process intensification. Here single use systems are optimized to achieve similar output levels as traditional stainless-steel facilities but at much lower capital expenditure, smaller footprints and faster implementation times. This presentation gives an overview on current approaches, describes the opportunities and limits of disposables and delivers recommendations to what should be done by suppliers and users in the near future.

Single Use Plastic Settlers For Clarifying Cell Culture Broth, Selective Removal Of Dead Cells And Affinity Capture Of Antibodies On Protein A Beads, Dhinakar Kompala, Mark Harris, Christopher Glascock, Premsingh Samuel

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements

We have redesigned the successful “inclined settler” technology used as a selective cell retention device in mammalian cell perfusion bioreactor cultures into a more compact and easily scalable design using cylindrical and conical geometries. Through this novel settler design, we have achieved 6 – 10 x more settling area for the same footprint, compared to the traditional multi-plate or lamellar rectilinear scale up design. Using this compact settler design, we have demonstrated significant clarification of the smaller yeast Pichia pastoris cells in continuous harvest or settler effluent stream and high cell densities (700 – 1000 O.D.) in perfusion bioreactors operated …

Physical Modeling Of Flow Nets In Groundwater And Determination Of Hydraulic Conductivity, Hannah Nicholas, Moses Karakouzian

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

The goal of this study is to physically model the paths that water particles take through soil, and estimate hydraulic conductivity for several soil configurations. Water paths, or flow lines, are shown by injecting dye into sand contained in a rectangular acrylic glass tank with a vertical barrier in the center; water is poured on one side of the tank and a pump is used to maintain constant head loss. If flow lines are formed, a flow net is to be drawn using photos of the tank and hydraulic conductivity is to be calculated.

This project consists of four phases: …

Coupled Thermally-Enhanced Bioremediation And Renewable Energy Storage System: Conceptual Framework And Modeling Investigation, Ali Moradi, Kathleen M. Smits, Jonathan O. Sharp

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

This paper presents a novel method to couple an environmental bioremediation system with a subsurface renewable energy storage system. This method involves treating unsaturated contaminated soil using in-situ thermally enhanced bioremediation; the thermal system is powered by renewable energy. After remediation goals are achieved, the thermal system can then be used to store renewable energy in the form of heat in the subsurface for later use. This method can be used for enhanced treatment of environmental pollutants for which temperature is considered a limiting factor. For instance, this system can be used at a wide variety of petroleum-related sites that …

Removal Efficiencies, Uptake Mechanisms And Competitive Effects Of Copper And Zinc In Various Stormwater Filter Media, Emily Heleva-Ponaski

Dissertations and Theses

Polluted stormwater, if not treated, can compromise water quality throughout our hydrologic cycle, adversely affecting aquatic ecosystems. Common stormwater pollutants, copper and zinc, have been identified as primary toxicants in multiple freshwater and marine environments. For small-scale generators, stormwater management can be cumbersome and implementation of common BMPs impractical thus catch basins are popular though not the most environmentally conscious and sustainable option. This study aims to characterize the potential of a mobile media filter operation for the treatment and on-site recycling of catch basin stormwater. The removal capacities of various commercially available filter media (e.g. a common perlite; Earthlite™, …

Toward Autonomous Wall-Climbing Robots For Inspection Of Concrete Bridges And Tunnels, Jizhong Xiao

INSPIRE Archived Webinars

In addition to visual inspection for surface flaws, inspectors are often required to detect subsurface defects (e.g., delamination and voids) using nondestructive evaluation (NDE) instruments, such as ground penetration radar (GPR) and impact sounding device, in order to determine the structural integrity of bridges and tunnels. In these cases, access to critical locations for reliable and safe inspections is a challenge.

Since 2002, Dr. Jizhong Xiao’s group has developed four generations of wall-climbing robots for NDE inspection of bridges and tunnels. These robots combine the advantages of aerodynamic attraction and suction to achieve a desirable balance of strong adhesion and …

Deep Rc: Enabling Remote Control Through Deep Learning, Jaron Ellingson, Gary Ellingson, Tim Mclain Sep 2018

Deep Rc: Enabling Remote Control Through Deep Learning, Jaron Ellingson, Gary Ellingson, Tim Mclain

Student Works

Human remote-control (RC) pilots have the ability to perceive the position and orientation of an aircraft using only third-person-perspective visual sensing. While novice pilots often struggle when learning to control RC aircraft, they can sense the orientation of the aircraft with relative ease. In this paper, we hypothesize and demonstrate that deep learning methods can be used to mimic the human ability to perceive the orientation of an aircraft from monocular imagery.

This work uses a neural network to directly sense the aircraft attitude. The network is combined with more conventional image processing methods for visual tracking of the aircraft. …
