Study On Complex Resistivity Of Artificial Sandstone Containing Conductive Mineral Under High Pressure, Tian Gang, Tang Xingong, Xiang Kui, Chi Meiyao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Due to the complex pore structure and non-single skeleton composition, natural rock samples are more difficult to study than artificial rock samples. The standard rock samples with different mineral content and volume content were artificially synthesized by using brass powder, pyrite sand, graphite powder, epoxy resin, etc. Complex resistivity measurements were taken to the samples by using AutoLab-1000 equipment under different formation pressure conditions. The complex resistivity and the parameters of zero frequency resistivity, polarizability, and time constant of the artificial sandstone standard were derived based on Debye decomposition model. Made a discussion on relationship between parameters of the model, …

Computational Design Of Flexible Electride With Nontrivial Band Topology, Sheng-Cai Zhu, Lei Wang, Jing-Yu Qu, Jun-Jie Wang, Timofey Frolov, Xing-Qiu Chen, Qiang Zhu

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

Electrides, with their excess electrons distributed in crystal cavities playing the role of anions, exhibit a variety of unique electronic and magnetic properties. In this work, we employ the first-principles crystal structure prediction to identify a new prototype of A3B electride in which both interlayer spacings and intralayer vacancies provide channels to accommodate the excess electrons in the crystal. This A3B type of structure is calculated to be thermodynamically stable for two alkaline metals oxides (Rb3O and K3O). Remarkably, the unique feature of multiple types of cavities makes the spatial arrangement of anionic electrons highly flexible via elastic strain engineering …

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The total phosphorus (TP) concentration, as the primary limiting eutrophication factor in the Mahabad Dam reservoir in Iran, was studied, considering the combined impacts of climate change, as well as the scenarios on changes in upstream TP loadings and downstream dam water allocations. Downscaled daily projected climate data were obtained from the Beijing Normal University Earth System Model (BNU-ESM) under moderate (RCP4.5) and extreme (RCP8.5) scenarios. These data were used as inputs of a calibrated Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model of the watershed in order to determine the effects of climate change on runoff yields in the watershed …

Magnetic Field Aided Indoor Navigation, William F. Storms Feb 2019

Magnetic Field Aided Indoor Navigation, William F. Storms

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines inertial navigation system aiding using magnetic field intensity data and a Kalman filter in an indoor environment. Many current aiding methods do not work well in an indoor environment, like aiding using the Global Positioning System. The method presented in this research uses magnetic field intensity data from a three-axis magnetometer in order to estimate position using a maximum – likelihood approach. The position measurements are then combined with a motion model using a Kalman filter. The magnetic field navigation algorithm is tested using a combination of simulated and real measurements. These tests are conducted using …

Development Of An Astrocyte/Glioma Co-Culture System For Measuring Cellular Dynamics, Urna Kansakar Feb 2019

Development Of An Astrocyte/Glioma Co-Culture System For Measuring Cellular Dynamics, Urna Kansakar

Doctoral Dissertations

Gliomas are brain tumors that primarily arise from glial cells. Gliomas account for 70% of the brain tumors and they are more prevalent in older adults. About 60% of the people with gliomas experience at least one seizure. Brain tumors can grow and metastasize to neighboring areas, thereby destroying normal brain cells. In a brain tumor microenvironment, both malignant cancer cells and healthy brain cells are present. Studies have shown that astrocytes may have a role in tumor growth in the brain. Monocultures cannot evaluate interactions between two cell types and does not accurately represent in vivo conditions. Thus, a …

Development Of A Counter-Flow Thermal Gradient Microfluidic Device, Shayan Davani Feb 2019

Development Of A Counter-Flow Thermal Gradient Microfluidic Device, Shayan Davani

Doctoral Dissertations

This work presents a novel counter-flow design for thermal stabilization of microfluidic thermal reactors. In these reactors, precise control of temperature of the liquid sample is achieved by moving the liquid sample through the thermal zones established ideally through the conduction in the solid material of the device. The goal here is to establish a linear thermal distribution when there is no flow and to minimize the temperature change at flow condition. External convection as well as internal flowinduced effects influence the prescribed thermal distribution. The counter-flow thermal gradient device developed in this study is capable of both stabilizing the …

Shingled Magnetic Recording Disks For Mass Storage Systems, Quoc Minh Le Feb 2019

Shingled Magnetic Recording Disks For Mass Storage Systems, Quoc Minh Le

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Disk drives have seen a dramatic increase in storage density over the last five decades, but to continue the growth seems difficult if not impossible because of physical limitations. One way to increase storage density is using a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) disk. Shingled writing is a promising technique that trades off the inability to update in-place for narrower tracks and thus a much higher data density. It is particularly appealing as it can be adopted while utilizing essentially the same physical recording mechanisms currently in use. Because of its manner of writing, an SMR disk would be unable to …
