Optimization Of Cabin Design For Enhanced Passenger Experience, Golnoosh Torkashvand
Optimization Of Cabin Design For Enhanced Passenger Experience, Golnoosh Torkashvand
Theses and Dissertations
Passenger experience has been a recent focus of many airline industries. Airline manufacturers and businesses have noticed that in order to stay sustainable in the competition of the market, they need to understand passengers’ needs. Passenger experience, however, is a broad concept that requires more effort to understand. This research is an attempt towards understanding passenger experience and suggesting a framework toward enhancing it in long-haul flights. We consider an activity-centric approach toward redefining passenger experience and evaluating it. In addition, we employ Human-Centered Design (HCD) methodologies to grasp a better understanding of passengers’ perceptions of those activities. HCD is …

Air Quality Monitoring Wireless Sensor Network With Electrochemical Sensing Elements, Saeed Faisal Malky
Air Quality Monitoring Wireless Sensor Network With Electrochemical Sensing Elements, Saeed Faisal Malky
Theses and Dissertations
Harmful atmospheric pollutants have been attributed to causing adverse weather conditions and health problems, which are particularly prevalent in more populated global regions, such as megacities. Nongovernmental and international agencies throughout the world have likewise called for increased awareness and action to effectively counter the increased rates of air pollution, as the consequences seem ominous. Meanwhile, in several major urban landscapes such as Saudi Arabia, no modern apparatus or efficient systematic mechanisms exist for the qualitative detection of dangerous pollutants and gases. The current counterparts for hazardous gas measurements are expensive, bulky and cumbersome to set up. Thus, sensor devices …
Semantic And Qualitative Physics-Based Formal Reasoning For Functional Decomposition In Mechanical Design, Xiaoyang Mao
Semantic And Qualitative Physics-Based Formal Reasoning For Functional Decomposition In Mechanical Design, Xiaoyang Mao
Theses and Dissertations
Function modeling plays an essential role in academy design studies, yet a lack of acceptance in industry. A possible reason is that the designer must have well understand of the controlled vocabularies and grammars to utilize this method. The research presented in this dissertation is to fill this gap so that designers can use function-based design method without relevant knowledge. In graph-based function models, the function verbs and flow nouns are usually chosen from predefined vocabularies. The vocabulary class definitions, combined with function modeling grammars defined at various levels of formalism, enable function-based reasoning. However, the text written in plain …

Numerical Modeling Of Phase Transition In Shock Tube Problem, Man Minh Le
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, we developed a numerical model for phase transition in shock-tube problem. This work focused on simulating shock-tube problem and the numerical framework is based on a two-phase flow model. Our simulation tool is an in-house FORTRAN multiphase compressible flow solver, RocSDT [31]. Specifically, this involves the Euler equations along with the Stiffened Gas Equation of State (EOS), an interface of liquid-gas type, and the effects of heat and mass transfer due to phase transition. This thesis described the implementation and incorporation of a phase transition model into a system of five partial differential equation model and the …
Hydrodynamic Ram Analysis Of Bonded Composite Fuel Tanks, Teddy Sedalor
Hydrodynamic Ram Analysis Of Bonded Composite Fuel Tanks, Teddy Sedalor
Theses and Dissertations
Military aircraft are tested against a variety of ballistics threats as part of their design to assess their vulnerability. One aspect of this approach/requirement is Hydrodynamic Ram testing which accounts for projectile impact into fuel tanks. Hydrodynamic Ram (HRAM), which occurs due to overpressure created in an enclosed fluid as a result of the transfer of energy and momentum from a penetrating projectile, can be quite destructive to the enclosing structure, which makes testing expensive. Therefore the need arises for numerical methods to supplement the testing and provide more test data than can be obtained directly from the article test. …

Investigating The Effects Of Altitude And Flap Setting On The Specific Excess Power Of A Pa-28-161 Piper Warrior, Tjimon Meric Louisy
Theses and Dissertations
The high number of General Aviation (GA) accidents attributed to Loss of Control suggests that GA pilots are lacking low speed awareness and are unable to appropriately recognize when the aircraft is in a low energy state. There is, therefore, an urgent need for the development of an energy management system which is applicable to GA aircraft that can alert the pilot in situations of low energy conditions and recommends to the pilot the appropriate corrective action to restore conditions to a safe energy state. This will require the development of an algorithm that governs this energy management system that …

A Systematic Approach For Automatically Answering General-Purpose Objective And Subjective Questions, Lok Prasad Acharya
A Systematic Approach For Automatically Answering General-Purpose Objective And Subjective Questions, Lok Prasad Acharya
Theses and Dissertations
In this era of information explosion, people generally rely on the Internet, and more precisely, the search engines to get answers to their questions. However, what a search engine can do is just retrieve documents. Given some keywords, it only returns the relevant ranked documents that contain the keywords. Although users often want a precise answer to a question, they are left to extract answers from the documents themselves. This is where Automatic Question Answering (AQA) systems come into play. An AQA system takes questions in natural language as input and searches related answers in the set of documents and …

Improving Grapheme-To-Phoneme Translation With The Use Of Nalu Attention Mechanisms, Brian Sheldon Smith
Improving Grapheme-To-Phoneme Translation With The Use Of Nalu Attention Mechanisms, Brian Sheldon Smith
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, Natural Language Processing in the field of machine learning has seen some major improvements. Data scientists have shown that neural networks are capable of breaking down semantics of sentences, translating languages, and answering complex questions with fast recall. While impressive, these feats all hinge on having access to a massive amount of clean text, or data sets with almost perfect grammar and spelling. Without this, neural networks will usually fail to converge on a meaningful result. To partially this dependency, Grapheme-to-Phoneme conversion can be employed. This is the conversion of words from their spellings to a form …

Deep Donors And Acceptors In Β-Ga2O3 Crystals: Determination Of The Fe2+/3+ Level By A Noncontact Method, Christopher A. Lenyk, Timothy D. Gustafson, Larry E. Halliburton, Nancy C. Giles
Faculty Publications
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), infrared absorption, and thermoluminescence (TL) are used to determine the Fe2+/3+ level in Fe-doped β-Ga2O3 crystals. With these noncontact spectroscopy methods, a value of 0.84 ± 0.05 eV below the conduction band is obtained for this level. Our results clearly establish that the E2 level observed in deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) experiments is due to the thermal release of electrons from Fe2+ ions. The crystals used in this investigation were grown by the Czochralski method and contained large concentrations of Fe acceptors and Ir donors, and trace amounts of Cr …

It includes powering frequency, electrical parameters, specifications, testing procedures, and other contents for EV WPT. Specifically, it describes the ranges of self-inductances of the transmitting coil, the receiving coil, and coupling coefficient (k), as well as the impedance matching values of the WPT system. Following the electrical parameters listed in SAE J2954 RP is crucial to ensure the EV wireless charging system is interoperable. This paper …
Energy-Performance Scalability Analysis Of A Novel Quasi-Stochastic Computing Approach, Prashanthi Metku, Ramu Seva, Minsu Choi
Energy-Performance Scalability Analysis Of A Novel Quasi-Stochastic Computing Approach, Prashanthi Metku, Ramu Seva, Minsu Choi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Stochastic computing (SC) is an emerging low-cost computation paradigm for efficient approximation. It processes data in forms of probabilities and offers excellent progressive accuracy. Since SC's accuracy heavily depends on the stochastic bitstream length, generating acceptable approximate results while minimizing the bitstream length is one of the major challenges in SC, as energy consumption tends to linearly increase with bitstream length. To address this issue, a novel energy-performance scalable approach based on quasi-stochastic number generators is proposed and validated in this work. Compared to conventional approaches, the proposed methodology utilizes a novel algorithm to estimate the computation time based on …
Structured Iterative Hard Thresholding For Categorical And Mixed Data Types, Thy Nguyen, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi
Structured Iterative Hard Thresholding For Categorical And Mixed Data Types, Thy Nguyen, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In many applications, data exists in a mixed data type format, i.e. a combination of nominal (categorical) and numerical features. A common practice for working with categorical features is to use an encoding method to transform the discrete values into numeric representation. However, numeric representation often neglects the innate structures in categorical features, potentially degrading the performance of learning algorithms. Utilizing the numeric representation could also limit interpretation of the learned model, such as finding the most discriminative categorical features or filtering irrelevant attributes. In this work, we extend the iterative hard thresholding (IHT) algorithm to quantify the structure of …

Nonlinear Loss Model In Absorptive-Type Ferrite Frequency-Selective Limiters, Anatoliy O. Boryssenko, Scott M. Gillette, Marina Y. Koledintseva
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Absorptive-type ferrite-based frequency-selective limiters (FSLs) utilize nonlinear (NL) phenomena in magnetized ferrites to provide real-time analog signal processing of RF/microwave electromagnetic (EM) signals. There are no commercially available modeling tools that simulate these interactions, and the development and optimization of FSLs are largely done experimentally. FSL modeling and design is complicated by NL, multiscale, and Multiphysics nature of operation. In this article, an NL loss model in a ferrite is proposed and implemented in an efficient numerical algorithm. The equivalent linear magnetic loss tangent is represented in a closed form. A full-wave numerical EM model with high-fidelity meshing is set …

Workflow of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) common-mode (CM) filter design of edge-coupled differential pairs on a printed circuit board (PCB) and sensitivity of its characteristics to variations of geometrical and material parameters are discussed. A number of simple 20-GHz EBG CM notch filters for differential strip line pairs are designed using full-wave numerical electromagnetic modeling, fabricating, and testing. The cases of one and two strip line differential pairs crossing the EBG patches are considered. The modeled and measured mixed-mode S-parameters are analyzed as functions of geometrical parameters, including size and number of EBG patches, gaps between them, geometry and position of …
Detection And Mitigation Of Attacks In Nonlinear Stochastic System Using Modified Detector, Chandreyee Bhowmick, S. Jagannathan
Detection And Mitigation Of Attacks In Nonlinear Stochastic System Using Modified Detector, Chandreyee Bhowmick, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel attack detection method is presented for a nonlinear system with known dynamics using the measured output in the presence of additive process and measurement noise. False data injection (FDI) and replay attacks are considered using a modified fault detector. The difference between the measured and the estimated output from an adaptive observer, often known as the innovation signal, is generated and shown to have a Gaussian distribution with non-zero mean. This innovation signal in conjunction with the modified detector is utilized to detect attacks under a stable controller using the estimated state vector. Unlike FDI attack, where the …

Novel Cyber Fault Prognosis And Resilience Control For Cyber-Physical Systems, Shanshan Bi, Tianchen Wang, Lei Wang, Maciej Zawodniok
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) consist of a network, computation, and physical process. Embedded networks, which deliver control and sensing signal, can potentially affect CPSs performance. However, the degradation of physical system performance caused by the embedded networks is frequently oversimplified with strong assumptions. The proposed scheme effectively relaxes those assumptions in the existing works that network delays are bounded in a specific range, or its distribution is time invariant. Most of the existing works on fault diagnosis and prognosis addressed the physical system fault detection and isolation and ignore cyber network faults. A novel cyber network fault prognosis scheme is proposed …

Sparsity Constrained Regression For High-Speed Signal Integrity Modeling, Jiacheng Zhuo, Jiayi He, Zurab Kiguradze, Bhyrav Mutnury, James Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-speed signal integrity (SI) modeling usually involves modeling non-linear subsystems. Traditional approaches like response surface modeling (RSM), artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) suffer from two major issues. Either they don't scale well when the number of dimensions or variables increase in the non-linear model, or they are sensitive to the initial training data used to create the models. For example: RSM approach requires large design of experiments (DoE) when the number of variables increase. With ANN, the designer has to spend a lot of time tuning or optimizing the hyperparameters. In this paper, a new approach …
