Detection Of Software Vulnerability Communication In Expert Social Media Channels: A Data-Driven Approach, Andrei Lima Queiroz
Doctoral
Conceptually, a vulnerability is: "A flaw or weakness in a system’s design, implementation,or operation and management that could be exploited to violate the system’s security policy".Some of these flaws can go undetected and exploited for long periods of time after soft-ware release. Although some software providers are making efforts to avoid this situ-ation, inevitability, users are still exposed to vulnerabilities that allow criminal hackersto take advantage. These vulnerabilities are constantly discussed in specialised forumson social media. Therefore, from a cyber security standpoint, the information found inthese places can be used for countermeasures actions against malicious exploitation ofsoftware. However, manual inspection …

Origami-inspired, dynamic spacecraft radiators have been proposed which utilize an expandable/collapsible surface capable of large variations in emitting surface area. In this work, an experimental prototype of this concept is realized and its performance is analyzed. In particular, we demonstrate the capability of maintaining a spacecraft component at a desired operating temperature through the expansion and contraction of a collapsible radiator to control radiative heat loss. Four aluminum panels are connected via a flexible hinge constructed from interwoven copper wires and suspended from an actuating framework. The radiator panels are connected to a heated aluminum block. The radiator is placed …

Investigation Of Factors Impacting A Helicopter Height-Velocity Diagram, Timothy A. Brown
Investigation Of Factors Impacting A Helicopter Height-Velocity Diagram, Timothy A. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
A dynamic helicopter model was incorporated into an optimal control problem to determine minimal landing velocities. The solutions were determined using pseudospectral collocation methods as implemented by the GPOPS-II software. These solutions were then compiled to develop a HV diagram. An HV diagram displays regions of flight based on a helicopter's airspeed and height above the ground in which a safe landing would not be possible following engine failure. The applied methodology for constructing the HV diagram reduced issues involving solution convergence that was encountered in previous research. The influence of ground effect on the dynamic model was also investigated. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Reorganizing bus frequency to cater for the actual travel demand can save the cost of the public transport system significantly. Many, if not all, existing studies formulate this as a bus frequency optimization problem which tries to minimize passengers’ average waiting time. However, many investigations have confirmed that the user satisfaction drops faster as the waiting time increases. Consequently, this paper studies the bus frequency optimization problem considering the user satisfaction. Specifically, for the first time to our best knowledge, we study how to schedule the buses such that the total number of passengers who could receive their bus services …

This is important since ELRs can be a solution to many issues, such as alleviating congestion, increasing multimodality along roadways, and reducing maintenance costs. ELRs in both North America and Australia were observed. Starting with the North American ELRs, the following study designs were employed to estimate the safety of ELRs: (a) yoked comparison where each ELR installation was matched with at least two comparable 2-lane roads to serve as comparison sites and (b) an Empirical Bayes …
Exploration And Comparison Of Image-Based Techniques For Strawberry Detection, Yongxin Liu
Exploration And Comparison Of Image-Based Techniques For Strawberry Detection, Yongxin Liu
Master's Theses
Strawberry is an important cash crop in California, and its supply accounts for 80% of the US market [2]. However, in current practice, strawberries are picked manually, which is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. In addition, the farmers need to hire an appropriate number of laborers to harvest the berries based on the estimated volume. When overestimating the yield, it will cause a waste of human resources, while underestimating the yield will cause the loss of the strawberry harvest [3]. Therefore, accurately estimating harvest volume in the field is important to farmers. This paper focuses on an image-based solution to detect …

Granular traffic data such as volume count, vehicle classification, speed measurement, and occupancy, allows managing transportation systems more effectively. For effective traffic operation and management, authorities require deploying many sensors across the network. Moreover, the ascending efforts to achieve smart transportation aspects put immense pressure on planning authorities to deploy more sensors to cover an extensive network. This research focuses on the development and evaluation of inexpensive data collection methodology by using two-dimensional (2-D) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. LiDAR is adopted since it is …
Resonant Triad Interactions In One And Two-Layer Systems, Malik Chabane
Resonant Triad Interactions In One And Two-Layer Systems, Malik Chabane
Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of the weakly nonlinear resonant interactions of a triad of gravity-capillary waves in systems of one and two fluid layers of arbitrary depth, in one and two-dimentions. For one-layer systems, resonant triad interactions of gravity-capillary waves are considered and a region where resonant triads can be always found is identified, in the two-dimensional wavevector angles-space. Then a description of the variations of resonant wavenumbers and wave frequencies over the resonance region is given. The amplitude equations correct to second order in wave slope are used to investigate special resonant triads that, providing their initial amplitude …

Energy And Performance-Optimized Scheduling Of Tasks In Distributed Cloud And Edge Computing Systems, Haitao Yuan
Energy And Performance-Optimized Scheduling Of Tasks In Distributed Cloud And Edge Computing Systems, Haitao Yuan
Dissertations
Infrastructure resources in distributed cloud data centers (CDCs) are shared by heterogeneous applications in a high-performance and cost-effective way. Edge computing has emerged as a new paradigm to provide access to computing capacities in end devices. Yet it suffers from such problems as load imbalance, long scheduling time, and limited power of its edge nodes. Therefore, intelligent task scheduling in CDCs and edge nodes is critically important to construct energy-efficient cloud and edge computing systems. Current approaches cannot smartly minimize the total cost of CDCs, maximize their profit and improve quality of service (QoS) of tasks because of aperiodic arrival …
