Benefits Of Pre-Construction Analysis: Cet Senior Capstone Expands Understanding Of An Urban Refuge At Gallopnyc Sunrise Stables, Aalaa Mohammed
Publications and Research
For any construction project, there exists a phase of planning known as “pre-construction.” This initial phase of the project provides a definition of the project, identification of potential issues, planning and scheduling, scope, cost estimation, and analysis of needs for the job. My research analyzes a pre-construction case study conducted for Gallop NYC’s Stable in Howard Beach, Queens. The findings suggest that the practice of construction planning is effective in order to avoid delays in construction itself and ensure successful project completion. Supporting literature examines some of the best practices for pre-construction analysis. These include but are not limited to: …

Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSR) play a vital role to provide cybersecurity for the data communication system. LFSR is a shift register where the input is linear of its previous states. The most important application of LFSR is the device’s ability to generate a pseudo-random sequence of values that are used in encryption and decryption to secure personal data. Moreover, LFSR is used in Cyclic Redundancy Check Calculations (CRC) which can help to detect errors and corruption in data communications as LFSR feedback values can be modified. The main objective of the research is to generate the pseudo-random sequence of …

Neonicotinoids have been the most commonly used insecticides since the early 1990s. Despite their efficacy in improving crop protection and management, these agrochemicals have gained recent attention for their negative impacts on non-target species such as honeybees and aquatic invertebrates. In recent years, neonicotinoids have been detected in rivers and streams across the world. Determining and predicting the exposure potential of neonicotinoids in surface water requires a thorough understanding of their fate and transport mechanisms. Therefore, our objective was to provide a comprehensive review of neonicotinoids with a focus on their fate and transport mechanisms to and within surface waters …

Bayes’ Network And Smart Sensors: Occupancy Detection, Donald Tryon
Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation presents a Bayesian analysis for determining residential occupancy using inexpensive commercially available passive infrared (PIR) motion detectors, compared against two other detectors that were used to establish ground-truth. One of the ground-truth detectors was a GPS signal from a smartphone, the second was a Bluetooth key fob. Data were gathered from four residential locations, and then analyzed to determine occupancy. The occupancy data collected from the PIR sensors were compared against ground-truth to verify the results of the PIR sensor events that were collected every minute for a week. The Bayesian training data that was used to determine …

The penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) on the electric power system is changing traditional power flow and analysis studies. DERs may cause the systems' protection and control equipment to operate outside their intended parameters, due to DERs' variability and dispatchability. As this penetration grows, hosting capacity studies as well as protection and control impact mitigation become critical components to advance this penetration. In order to conduct such studies accurately, the electric power system's distribution components should be modeled correctly, and will require realistic time series loads at varying temporal and spatial conditions. The load component consists of the built …

Representational Learning Approach For Predicting Developer Expertise Using Eye Movements, Sumeet Maan
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The thesis analyzes an existing eye-tracking dataset collected while software developers were solving bug fixing tasks in an open-source system. The analysis is performed using a representational learning approach namely, Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP). The novel aspect of the analysis is the introduction of a new feature engineering method based on the eye-tracking data. This is then used to predict developer expertise on the data. The dataset used in this thesis is inherently more complex because it is collected in a very dynamic environment i.e., the Eclipse IDE using an eye-tracking plugin, iTrace. Previous work in this area only worked on …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been used to design STBCs that provide improved performance in terms of various design parameters. In this paper, we show that all QODs obtained from generic iterative construction techniques based on the Adams-Lax-Phillips approach have linear and decoupled decoders which significantly reduce the computational complexity at the receiver. Our result is based on the quaternionic description of communication channels among dual-polarized antennas. Another contribution of this work is the linear and decoupled decoder for quasi-orthogonal codes for non-square as well as square designs. The proposed solution …

Retracted: Numerical Modeling Of An L-Shaped Very Stiff Concrete Retaining Wall., A. Badr, Y. Djerbib, S. Elbagalatyo
Mansoura Engineering Journal
A numerical model incorporated in finite element PLAXIS program is presented in this paper to simulate the behavior of an "L-shaped" very stiff reinforced concrete prototype wall. The proposed numerical model has been calibrated and validated experimental results conducted previously at Manchester University. Taking into account the centrifuge model dimensions and geometry with respect to the centrifuge scaling law, the loading conditions and sequences during the test, and by considering for the modeling of the soil the hardening soil model, the numerical results obtained in terms of pattern and magnitude of the wall displacements were very close to the experimentally …

Subsystem Identification Of Feedback And Feedforward Systems With Time Delay, S. Alireza Seyyed Mousavi, Xingye Zhang, Thomas M. Seigler, Jesse B. Hoagg
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
We present an algorithm for identifying discrete-time feedback-and-feedforward subsystems with time delay that are interconnected in closed loop with a known subsystem. This frequency-domain algorithm uses only measured input and output data from a closed-loop discrete-time system, which is single input and single output. No internal signals are assumed to be measured. The orders of the unknown feedback and feedforward transfer functions are assumed to be known. We use a two-candidate-pool multi-convex-optimization approach to identify not only the feedback and feedforward transfer functions but also the feedback and feedforward time delay. The algorithm guarantees asymptotic stability of the identified closed-loop …
Experimental Testing Of A Lightly Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall, Jerry Hue Truong Luong, Rory Sebastian De Sevilla
Experimental Testing Of A Lightly Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall, Jerry Hue Truong Luong, Rory Sebastian De Sevilla
Architectural Engineering: Graduate Reports
This project report summarizes the findings of a half-scale laboratory test on a slender lightly reinforced concrete (LRC) shear wall subjected to cyclic loading. LRC shear walls, specifically those of pre-1980’s type design, have longitudinal and horizontal reinforcement ratios near the code minimum, while often lacking confinement in the wall end-zones. These walls are thought to exhibit brittle compressive failure mechanisms such as rebar buckling or concrete crushing based on observations from past earthquakes. Non-ductile concrete buildings are a large contributor to earthquake losses around the globe, as noted in the San Fernando (1971) and Christchurch (2011) earthquakes, to name …

In this paper, a mathematical model of the operation process of the ZigBee standard wireless network for remote monitoring systems based on the Markov chain apparatus was developed. Using the model was evaluated of the operation process of the CSMA/CA algorithm of the MAC level of the IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee standard. The peculiarity of this mathematical model is that it takes into account the level of loading of network elements and potential distortions in the transmitted packets as a result of the influence of interference. Using the developed mathematical model, the main characteristics of the network operation process, such as …

Practical Adhesion Measurements In Organic Coatings; Advancing Understanding And Mechanical Methods Development, Diana Gottschalk
Dissertations
“Adhesion” can be considered either a mechanical or chemical phenomenon. The mechanical interpretation describes the difficulty of separating surfaces and is useful for quantifying performance within applications that depend on bulk and interfacial properties. Chemical adhesion describes interfacial resistance to chemical attack and does not depend on bulk properties. Predicting chemical failure through mechanical measurement is confounded by the influence of bulk properties. However, the prospect is attractive because of the robust tolerance for sample geometries, allowing experiments to resemble an end-use system. The present work's primary goal was to elevate mechanical methods to provide a detailed interfacial characterization of …

Antenna Radiation Element Designs For 5g Applications, Zhijun Gui
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis introduced the advantage of the fifth-generation network and gave examples to the three major classes of applications categorized by International Telecommunication Union-Radiocommunication Sector. In this work, a patch antenna and a board-band bow-tie antenna with microelectromechanical switch design were modified to meet 5G communication purposes. The revised patch antenna produced a minimum S11 of -57.92dB, a resonant frequency at the 28GHz, and bandwidth of 4.55GHz. The modified design meets the requirements for wireless communication purposes. During the duplication process of the board-band bow-tie antenna design, multiple discrepancies were found, and the proposed results were not able to achieve. …
Puerto Rico’S Electric Power System: An Analysis Of Contemporary Failures And The Opportunity To Rebuild A More Resilient Grid, Including The Development Of A Utility-Scale Solar Farm On The Island Municipality Of Culebra, Federico Sotomayor
Sustainability and Social Justice
Puerto Rico’s grid was decimated in 2017 after experiencing back-to-back hurricanes – Maria and Irma. Although the hurricanes caused tremendous damage and hardship to the island, it also created the right circumstances for the local energy landscape to transition toward a more resilient and sustainable model. Through an analysis of recent challenges by the local electric utility PREPA, and subsequent fallout from the hurricanes, we see that they now hold a unique opportunity to redeem themselves by taking advantage of catalyzed resources to rebuild a better system. One region that could greatly benefit from an improved and reimagined grid are …

As researchers across the globe have focused their attention on understanding SARS-CoV-2, the picture that is emerging is that of a virus that has serious effects on the vasculature in multiple organ systems including the cerebral vasculature. Observed effects on the central nervous system include neurological symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness), fatal microclot formation and in rare cases encephalitis. However, our understanding of how the virus causes these mild to severe neurological symptoms and how the cerebral vasculature is impacted remains unclear. Thus, the results presented in this report explored whether deleterious outcomes from the SARS-CoV-2 viral spike protein on primary …

The main three algorithms that other phonetic algorithms are built from are Soundex, New York State Identification and Intelligence System (NYSIIS), …
A Distance Based Multisample Test For High-Dimensional Compositional Data With Applications To The Human Microbiome, Qingyang Zhang, Thy Dao
A Distance Based Multisample Test For High-Dimensional Compositional Data With Applications To The Human Microbiome, Qingyang Zhang, Thy Dao
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
Compositional data refer to the data that lie on a simplex, which are common in many scientific domains such as genomics, geology and economics. As the components in a composition must sum to one, traditional tests based on unconstrained data become inappropriate, and new statistical methods are needed to analyze this special type of data.
Results
In this paper, we consider a general problem of testing for the compositional difference between K populations. Motivated by microbiome and metagenomics studies, where the data are often over-dispersed and high-dimensional, we formulate a well-posed hypothesis from a Bayesian point of view and …
Nondestructive Evaluation (Nde) Of Additively Manufactured Metal (Amm) Parts Using Ultrasonic Testing (Ut), Austin M. Thomas
Nondestructive Evaluation (Nde) Of Additively Manufactured Metal (Amm) Parts Using Ultrasonic Testing (Ut), Austin M. Thomas
Master's Theses
Additive manufacturing is a category of emerging manufacturing processes that have applications in creating metal components with high value and complexity. The adoption of these parts is limited by the lack of fully developed nondestructive techniques for identifying internal defects. The use of ultrasonic testing for detecting and measuring internal features in additively manufactured metal parts is investigated. A low-cost ultrasonic immersion testing system was designed, constructed, and validated for the inspection of an additively manufactured titanium specimen with artificial defects as well as other metal artifacts. An ultrasound calibration block was additively manufactured from stainless steel type 316L and …

Predicting Residential Energy Consumption Using Wavelet Decomposition With Deep Neural Network, Dagimawi Eneyew, Miriam A M Capretz, Girma Bitsuamlak, London Hydro
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Electricity consumption is accelerating due to economic and population growth. Hence, energy consumption prediction is becoming vital for overall consumption management and infrastructure planning. Recent advances in smart electric meter technology are making high-resolution energy consumption data available. However, many parameters influencing energy consumption are not typically monitored for residential buildings. Therefore, this study’s main objective is to develop a data-driven energy consumption forecasting model (next-hour consumption) for residential houses solely based on analyzing electricity consumption data. This research proposes a deep neural network architecture that combines stationary wavelet transform features and convolutional neural networks. The proposed approach utilizes automatically …

Deep Neural Network For Load Forecasting Centred On Architecture Evolution, Santiago Gomez-Rosero, Miriam A M Capretz, London Hydro
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Nowadays, electricity demand forecasting is critical for electric utility companies. Accurate residential load forecasting plays an essential role as an individual component for integrated areas such as neighborhood load consumption. Short-term load forecasting can help electric utility companies reduce waste because electric power is expensive to store. This paper proposes a novel method to evolve deep neural networks for time series forecasting applied to residential load forecasting. The approach centres its efforts on the neural network architecture during the evolution. Then, the model weights are adjusted using an evolutionary optimization technique to tune the model performance automatically. Experimental results on …

In this paper, we develop and validate a rigorous modeling framework, based on Duhamel's Theorem, for the unsteady one‐dimensional vertical transport of a solute across a flat sediment‐water interface (SWI) and through the benthic biolayer of a turbulent stream. The modeling framework is novel in capturing the two‐way coupling between evolving solute concentrations above and below the SWI and in allowing for a depth‐varying diffusivity. Three diffusivity profiles within the sediment (constant, exponentially decaying, and a hybrid model) are evaluated against an extensive set of previously published laboratory measurements of turbulent mass transfer across the SWI. The exponential diffusivity profile …
