Bending-Torsion Flutter Analysis Of A Viscoelastic Tapered Wing Carrying An Engine And Subjected To A Follower Thrust Force, Youssef Shaaban Abdelfattah Matter
Theses
Flutter, a dynamic divergent instability, is one of the significant phenomena of Aeroelasticity. This dangerous aeroelastic phenomenon can occur to any flexible structure subjected to aerodynamic forces such as aircraft wings, bridges, buildings, etc. It is important to analyze the flutter in order to predict the speed and frequency at which it occurs so that structural damages and failures can be avoided. This thesis is concerned with non-dimensional parametric modeling of the flutter of a viscoelastic tapered wing with an attached engine. The main objectives of this thesis are to determine regions of stability and boundaries of flutter speed and …

The Influence Of Channel Deepening On Tides, River Discharge Effects, And Storm Surge, Stefan A. Talke, Ramin Familkhalili, David A. Jay
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We combine archival research, semi-analytical models, and numerical simulations to address the following question: how do changes to channel geometry alter tidal properties and flood dynamics in a hyposynchronous, strongly frictional estuary with a landward decay in tidal amplitudes? Records in the Saint Johns River Estuary since the 1890s show that tidal range has doubled in Jacksonville, Florida. Near the estuary inlet, tidal discharge approximately doubled but tidal amplitudes increased only ~6%. Modeling shows that increased shipping channel depths from 5-6 to ~13m drove the observed changes, with other factors like channel shortening and width reduction producing comparatively minor effects. …

Phosphorus (P) is an essential life-supporting nutrient for which there is no substitute. Modern farming practice and food production are supported by the application of mineral P fertiliser derived from finite mined phosphate rock. The European Union does not have indigenous mineral phosphate reserves, which poses a significant issue to food security. This research paper assesses the potential of indigenous recycled P sources to replace imported P fertiliser within the Republic of Ireland. The research is undertaken at NUTS 3 (Nomenclature of Territorial Units) regional level, the nutrient soil P requirement is established, and the extent to which the …
Distance-Based Formation Control Using Decentralized Sensing With Infrared Photodiodes, Steven Williams
Distance-Based Formation Control Using Decentralized Sensing With Infrared Photodiodes, Steven Williams
LSU Master's Theses
This study presents an onboard sensor system for determining the relative positions of mobile robots, which is used in decentralized distance-based formation controllers for multi-agent systems. This sensor system uses infrared photodiodes and LEDs; its effective use requires coordination between the emitting and detecting robots. A technique is introduced for calculating the relative positions based on photodiode readings, and an automated calibration system is designed for future maintenance. By measuring the relative positions of their neighbors, each robot is capable of running an onboard formation controller, which is independent of both a centralized controller and a global positioning-like system (e.g., …
Development Of Cracking Resistance Prediction Model Of Long-Term Aged Asphalt Mixtures, Peyman Barghabany
Development Of Cracking Resistance Prediction Model Of Long-Term Aged Asphalt Mixtures, Peyman Barghabany
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
With the increasing complexity of asphalt mixture composition, the current volumetric-based Superpave mixture design would not be sufficient to address durability concerns. To address this limitation, performance-based testing is introduced to supplement conventional volumetric mixture design in assessing the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. To perform cracking tests, samples need to be aged to represent the most embrittlement case. The current AASHTO standard for asphalt mixture long-term aging (LTA) is a 5-day oven-aging at 85°C. Quality control/assurance practices require samples to be long-term aged prior to a cracking test which is a time-consuming process. Therefore, it would be beneficial to …

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Placement of Vegetated Filter Strips (VFS) along roadways may facilitate removal of nutrients from stormwater runoff. The objective of this research is to compare water quality performance of a VFS containing engineered media to that of typical Florida sandy soil. Storms of variable intensity were simulated over two 1:1 scale physical models of typical one- and two-lane roadway shoulders, one with engineered media (treatment), and one without (control). Simulated roadway runoff was introduced as sheet flow from the roadway and precipitation was applied with a rainfall simulator. Samples of runoff and infiltrate were tested for Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration and …

To address the issue of global warming and climate change issues, recent research efforts have highlighted opportunities for capturing and electrochemically converting carbon dioxide (CO2). Despite metal doped polymers receiving widespread attention in this respect, the structures hitherto reported lack in ease of synthesis with scale up feasibility. In this study, a series of mesoporous metal-doped polymers (MRFs) with tunable metal functionality and hierarchical porosity were successfully synthesized using a one-step copolymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde with Polyethyleneimine (PEI) under solvothermal conditions. The effect of PEI and metal doping concentrations were observed on physical properties and adsorption results. The results …

Power system optimization methods are wildly used to solve power system problems. Engineers adopt different methods to keep the reliability and efficiency of the power system operation, planning and control. This dissertation focuses on the application and implementation of two optimization methods: Convex relaxation and Benders' decomposition.
The first part of the dissertation focuses on the application of convex relaxation to solve Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF) problems. In the completed work, a 3-node cycle based sparse convex relaxation is proposed to solve ACOPF problems. This method adds virtual lines in minimal chordless cycles to decompose each of them …
Prediction Of Self-Diffusion Constants In Model And Real Systems Using Machine Learning, Joshua P. Allers
Prediction Of Self-Diffusion Constants In Model And Real Systems Using Machine Learning, Joshua P. Allers
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Understanding diffusion of chemical compounds is important for the design and optimization of many chemical engineering and energy processes. Recent modifications to the Darken equation allow for accurate prediction of Maxwell-Stefan (MS) diffusion in mixtures. Still, there are few practical applications due to the requirement of individual self-diffusion constants. A reliable predictive model for self-diffusion constants would be highly valuable when used in conjunction with the modified Darken equation. Here, we show that Machine Learning (ML) can be used to develop generalized models for self-diffusion in Lennard Jones (LJ) systems and real systems of pure solutions. The use of Artificial …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Toe design is an important task for coastal engineers as it ensures the stability of the main armor layer and prevents scour in front of the armor slope. Several laboratory experiments have been conducted to investigate the toe stability using different testing approaches, i.e. damage due to a single test condition and cumulative damage due to a number of conditions. In addition, the methods of measuring and reporting damage to the toe are not the same as some researchers have counted only stones that were washed away from the toe; while others counted all the stones that have been displaced. …

A Modular Framework For Multi-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles For Military Operations, Dante Tezza
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (MR-UAV) are commonly used in a wide range of military operations. However, current MR-UAV models have limited payload capabilities and flight time, making it impractical for a single system to be well-suited for different applications. For instance, a drone designed to carry heavier equipment is not well suited for uses that require agility and speed. Therefore, military organizations employ multiple MR-UAV models, leading to complex logistics, training, and overall increased costs.
This dissertation presents a modular MR-UAV framework that allows a user to quickly tailor the aircraft for different military operations by easily changing modular parts …

Graph Automorphic Approaches To The Robustness Of Complex Networks, Hossein Parastvand, Airlie Chapman, Octavian Bass, Stefan Lachowicz
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Leveraging on graph automorphic properties of complex networks (CNs), this study investigates three robustness aspects of CNs including the robustness of controllability, disturbance decoupling, and fault tolerance against failure in a network element. All these aspects are investigated using a quantified notion of graph symmetry, namely the automorphism group, which has been found implications for the network controllability during the last few years. The typical size of automorphism group is very big. The study raises a computational issue related to determining the whole set of automorphism group and proposes an alternative approach which can attain the emergent symmetry characteristics from …

Coal Pyrolysis Models For Use In Massively Parallel Oxyfuel-Fired Boiler Simulations, Andrew Perry Richards
Theses and Dissertations
Accurately modeling key aspects of coal combustion allows for the virtual testing and application of new technologies and processes without the need for investments in lab- and pilot-scale facilities, since such facilities may only be used for a few small tests. However, modeling of subprocesses must not only be accurate but computationally efficient. Modeling of coal devolatilization reactions and processes are one of the important parts of large-scale simulations of coal combustion systems. The work presented here details efforts to improve the modeling of coal devolatilization processes in massively-parallel simulations of coal combustors, including: (1) devolatilization rate/yield models, (2) modeling …
Adventuring Into Complexity By Exploring Data: From Complicity To Sustainability, Tim Lutz
Adventuring Into Complexity By Exploring Data: From Complicity To Sustainability, Tim Lutz
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Problems of sustainability are typically represented by major present-day challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental and social injustice. Framed this way, sustainable lives and societies depend on finding solutions to each problem. From another perspective, there is only one problem behind them all, stated by Gregory Bateson as: “…the difference between how nature works and the way people think,” and complexity provides a way to define and approach this problem. I extend Edgar Morin’s conceptions of restricted and general complexity into pedagogy to address problems of simplicity and reductionist teaching. The proposed pedagogy is based on long …
Escaping Destructive Communities Towards An Underground Utopian Space, Rana Dghaily
Escaping Destructive Communities Towards An Underground Utopian Space, Rana Dghaily
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Going to the underground has always been the escape for people in harsh cases like wars and natural disasters. While the city centers are surrendered to the seizing through global capital, more density is forced on the territories of the city in the form of urban sprawl, leading to the uncontrolled, unplanned and unrestricted urban spreading, and then forcing to look for an escape for this continuous growth. Subterranean architecture would be the escaping solution that architects will depend on in the future. Subterranean architecture refers to the underground structure that is built in unique sites and where traditional buildings …

Until the nineteenth century, space delineation was tied only to the architectural norm, and even now, space is considered as a fundamental area that provide a safe and shelter for its user. Architecture historically has evolved significantly, altering the way people perceive space. Anciently, world civilization used to pay great attention in portraying semiotic of spatial experience in their architectural practices. Back when reflecting moods in architecture was part of utilization of the function. Moreover, Civilization has revolutionized the means of spatial delineation due to new trends in technological evolution. Therefore, to comprehend this association, the studies can distinguish how …

Exploring Utopian Concepts In The Contemporary Water Architecture, Aya Chehab, Hiba Mohsen
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Water has since the beginning of civilizations been known to be the vital component of mankind’s existence. The inseparable relation between architecture and water is well-established from the beginning of ages where humans first settlements arose; that inevitably led to the creation of long-lasting shelters. Despite their strong bond, the architectural relationship with water has been through an unfortunate downfall throughout the years. Some contemporary architects admire to achieve an innovative approach in their projects, but are still lacking the risk of incorporating water as a key component for it; where it can act as a symbol of grandeur, creating …

Impact Of Urban City Sprawl On The Identity Of Suburbs And Rural Areas, Fadi Nasreddine
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Urban sprawl is the rapid expansion of the city towards the suburbs and the countryside, and it happens for various reasons. The first one is of residential nature, and is a result of growing population density while others are of political, economic, and social nature. There is no doubt that the city's encroachment towards the countryside and the emergence of new patterns of construction such as buildings and transportation networks have more drawbacks than advantages, in developing countries, especially in the absence of planning. This phenomenon causes the rise of real estate prices that leads to a change in the …
