Discovery And Investigation Of Ammonia Decomposition Catalysts, Katherine Mccullough Apr 2021

Discovery And Investigation Of Ammonia Decomposition Catalysts, Katherine Mccullough

Theses and Dissertations

Liquid ammonia can be used as a hydrogen transportation and generation source for use in PEM fuel cells. Current Ru catalysts for ammonia decomposition contain high loadings of Ru and require reaction temperatures at or above 550°C to attain equilibrium conversion. For on-site hydrogen generation, it is of interest to combine hydrogen generation from ammonia decomposition directly with PEM fuel cells. For this occur, operating temperatures need to be considerably lowered and effluent concentrations of ammonia need to be minimized to avoid poisoning of the membrane. Therefore, it is of interest to develop a low-cost catalyst that exhibits high activity …

Today Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are the most-emphasized battery technology among the many different battery systems in the market. However, due to their high cost (especially for electric vehicle applications), flammability and toxicity, the development of inexpensive and safer alternative battery chemistries has been the focus of a significant amount of recent research. Among various battery chemistries, Aluminum-based (Al-based) and Zinc-based (Zn-based) batteries have been touted as promising options to compete with Li-ion batteries. However, the practical realization of Al battery chemistries has been difficult over a long period of time (170 years) due to a number of fundamental and intrinsic …

Separate Effects Tests For Studying Thermal Gradient Driven Cracking In Uo2 Pellets Undergoing Resistive Heating, Sobhan Patnaik Apr 2021

Separate Effects Tests For Studying Thermal Gradient Driven Cracking In Uo2 Pellets Undergoing Resistive Heating, Sobhan Patnaik

Theses and Dissertations

A variety of normal operation and accident scenarios can generate thermal stresses large enough to cause cracking in light-water reactor (LWR) fuel pellets. Cracking of fuel pellets can lead to reduced heat removal, larger centerline temperatures, and localized stress in cladding, all of which impact fuel performance. It is important to understand the temperature profile on the pellet before and after cracking to improve cracking models in fuel performance codes such as BISON. However, in reactor observation and measurement of cracking is very challenging owing to the harsh environment and design of fuel rods.

Recently, a state-of-the-art experimental pellet cracking …

Physical Modeling Of Backward Erosion Piping Phenomenon In A Geotechnical Centrifuge, William Fernando Ovalle Villamil Apr 2021

Physical Modeling Of Backward Erosion Piping Phenomenon In A Geotechnical Centrifuge, William Fernando Ovalle Villamil

Theses and Dissertations

Backward erosion piping is a mechanism of internal erosion that has been widely recognized as a potential hazard for water-retaining structures, such as dams and levees, that are founded on granular materials. Backward erosion piping initiates toward the downstream zone of the structure by the concentration of flow at an exit point acting as drainage, which leads to a localized loosening of the soil and eventually to a continuous migration of grains from the foundation following a piping path pattern. Such piping path extends backward toward the impoundment once a certain critical hydraulic condition is met, resulting in the loss …

Mechanism Of Therapeutic Efficacy Of New Drugs In Glioblastoma, Firas Hameed Khathayer Apr 2021

Mechanism Of Therapeutic Efficacy Of New Drugs In Glioblastoma, Firas Hameed Khathayer

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma is the most malignant and prevalent brain tumor in adults. It can grow and spread quickly causing harm to brain health. The deregulation of epigenetic mechanisms is considered the main agent in the developing of GBM. One of the enzymes involved in epigenetic alternation and cancer development are histone deacetylases enzyme (HDAC) by removal acetyl group from histone and create condensed chromatin that suppresses transcription gene to histone and non-histone proteins involved in tumorigenesis. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HADCi) are the most common therapeutic methods for many types of cancer treatments. In the present study, we used relative HDAC inhibitor …

Failure Of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Yarns (Uhmpwe) Under Transverse Loading Using Different Indenter Geometries, Karan Shah

Theses and Dissertations

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) Dyneema® SK-76 fibers are widely used in personnel protection systems. Transverse ballistic impact onto these fibers results in complex multiaxial deformation modes such as axial tension, axial compression, transverse compression, and transverse shear. Previous impact studies on high performance yarns and quasi-static transverse loading of single fibers using different indenter geometries show premature failure of yarns and single fiber caused by the degradation of tensile failure strain due to the presence of such multi-axial deformation modes. However, there is a dearth of failure criterion in the literature for ballistic applications that considers the contribution of …

Quaternion Codes In Mimo System Of Dual-Polarized Antennas, Sajid Ali, Sara Shakil Qureshi, Syed Ali Hassan

All Works

The use of quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) to describe point-to-point communication among dual-polarized antennas has the potential to provide higher rate orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal complex designs exploiting polarization diversity among space and time diversities. Furthermore, it is essential to have a space time block code (STBC) which offers a linear and decoupled decoder which quasi-orthogonal designs fail to attain. In this paper, we show how the realm of quaternions unexpectedly offers us a possible solution and codes obtained from quaternion designs mostly achieve both linear and decoupled decoders. This motivated us to perform an indispensable search for QODs such that …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

With the massive amount of data that has been generated in the form of unstructured text documents, Biomedical Named Entity Recognition (BioNER) is becoming increasingly important in the field of biomedical research. Since currently there does not exist any automatic archiving of the obtained results, a lot of this information remains hidden in the textual details and is not easily accessible for further analysis. Hence, text mining methods and natural language processing techniques are used for the extraction of information from such publications.Named entity recognition, is a subtask that comes under information extraction that focuses on finding and categorizing specific …

City Best Practices To Improve Transit Operations And Safety, Michelle Derobertis, Christopher E. Ferrell, Richard W. Lee, David Moore Apr 2021

City Best Practices To Improve Transit Operations And Safety, Michelle Derobertis, Christopher E. Ferrell, Richard W. Lee, David Moore

Mineta Transportation Institute

Public, fixed-route transit services most commonly operate on public streets. In addition, transit passengers must use sidewalks to access transit stops and stations. However, streets and sidewalks are under the jurisdiction of municipalities, not transit agencies. Various municipal policies, practices, and decisions affect transit operations, rider convenience, and passenger safety. Thus, these government entities have an important influence over the quality, safety, and convenience of transit services in their jurisdictions. This research identified municipal policies and practices that affect public transport providers’ ability to deliver transit services. They were found from a comprehensive literature review, interviews and discussions with five …

Towards Efficient Motif-Based Graph Partitioning: An Adaptive Sampling Approach, Shixun Huang, Yuchen Li, Zhifeng Bao, Zhao Li Apr 2021

Towards Efficient Motif-Based Graph Partitioning: An Adaptive Sampling Approach, Shixun Huang, Yuchen Li, Zhifeng Bao, Zhao Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the problem of efficient motif-based graph partitioning (MGP). We observe that existing methods require to enumerate all motif instances to compute the exact edge weights for partitioning. However, the enumeration is prohibitively expensive against large graphs. We thus propose a sampling-based MGP (SMGP) framework that employs an unbiased sampling mechanism to efficiently estimate the edge weights while trying to preserve the partitioning quality. To further improve the effectiveness, we propose a novel adaptive sampling framework called SMGP+. SMGP+ iteratively partitions the input graph based on up-to-date estimated edge weights, and adaptively adjusts the sampling distribution …

Dycuckoo: Dynamic Hash Tables On Gpus, Yuchen Li, Qiwei Zhu, Zheng Lyu, Zhongdong Huang, Jianling Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The hash table is a fundamental structure that has been implemented on graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate a wide range of analytics workloads. Most existing works have focused on static scenarios and occupy large GPU memory to maximize the insertion efficiency. In many cases, data stored in hash tables get updated dynamically, and existing approaches use unnecessarily large memory resources. One naïve solution is to rebuild a hash table (known as rehashing) whenever it is either filled or mostly empty. However, this approach renders significant overheads for rehashing. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic cuckoo hash table …

Newslink: Empowering Intuitive News Search With Knowledge Graphs, Yueji Yang, Yuchen Li, Anthony Tung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

News search tools help end users to identify relevant news stories. However, existing search approaches often carry out in a "black-box" process. There is little intuition that helps users understand how the results are related to the query. In this paper, we propose a novel news search framework, called NEWSLINK, to empower intuitive news search by using relationship paths discovered from open Knowledge Graphs (KGs). Specifically, NEWSLINK embeds both a query and news documents to subgraphs, called subgraph embeddings, in the KG. Their embeddings' overlap induces relationship paths between the involving entities. Two major advantages are obtained by incorporating subgraph …

The Design Of Dynamic Probabilistic Caching With Time-Varying Content Popularity, Jie Gao, Shan Zhang, Lian Zhao, Xuemin Shen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we design dynamic probabilistic caching for the scenario when the instantaneous content popularity may vary with time while it is possible to predict the average content popularity over a time window. Based on the average content popularity, optimal content caching probabilities can be found, e.g., from solving optimization problems, and existing results in the literature can implement the optimal caching probabilities via static content placement. The objective of this work is to design dynamic probabilistic caching that: i) converge (in distribution) to the optimal content caching probabilities under time-invariant content popularity, and ii) adapt to the time-varying …

Measurements And Analysis Of Propagation Channels In Vehicle-To-Infrastructure Scenarios, Wei Li, Xiaoya Hu, Jie Gao, Lian Zhao, Xuemin Shen Apr 2021

Measurements And Analysis Of Propagation Channels In Vehicle-To-Infrastructure Scenarios, Wei Li, Xiaoya Hu, Jie Gao, Lian Zhao, Xuemin Shen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we present measurements and analysis of propagation channels in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) scenarios, which are the basis of designing vehicular communication systems. Firstly, we propose a deterministic geometry-based method to classify V2I links into three types, i.e., line-of-sight beneath (LOS-B), non-LOS (NLOS), and line-of-sight above (LOS-A), based on the environmental features, where roadside row of trees constitute the main obstacles. Secondly, for each link, we investigate the large-scale fading effect on V2I channels, including the path loss exponent and shadowing components. Subsequently, we validate the empirical path loss model using extensive measurements and two classical channel models. The …

Scenario-Based Simulation Of Treatment Processes For Minimization Of Sludge Production From Al-Saad Wastewater Treatment Plant, Omar Gamil Abdelmajeed Hussien

Theses

The biological-activated sludge treatment process is the most widely used approach to treating domestic wastewater. It involves the transformation of soluble and particulate organic matter to gases and large amounts of settleable biomass (produced sludge). This sludge is considered one of the most pressing management challenges since its treatment represents approximately 50 to 60% of the total operational cost of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The traditional management of excess sludge is by disposal in landfills, incineration, or agriculture reuse in the form of fertilizers but due to energy and environmental concerns, many jurisdictions developed strict policies and regulations for …
