Comparative Safety Analysis Of Accelerator Driven Subcritical Systems And Critical Nuclear Energy Systems, Run Luo, Shripad Revankar, Fuyu Zhao
School of Nuclear Engineering Faculty Publications
The accelerator driven subcritical system (ADS) has been chosen as one of the best candidates for Generation IV nuclear energy systems which could not only produce clean energy but also incinerate nuclear waste. The transient characteristics and operation principles of ADS are significantly different from those of the critical nuclear energy system (CNES). In this work, the safety characteristics of ADS are analyzed and compared with CNES by a developed neutronics and thermal-hydraulics coupled code named ARTAP. Three typical accidents are carried out in both ADS and CNES, including reactivity insertion, loss of flow, and loss of heat sink. The …

Thin protonic ceramic electrolyte contributes to lower ohmic resistance and enhances electrochemical performance of protonic ceramic electrochemical cells. However, manufacturing of large-scale thin electrolyte remains a challenge. Wet powder spraying is an attractive technique to deposit <10 >μm thin electrolyte when advanced atomizing techniques and optimized spraying process are integrated. Here ultrasonic atomization is integrated in the wet powder spray technique to reduce the thickness of electrolyte. Moreover, a parametric study is conducted to optimize the wet powder spray process to deposit uniform and crack-free electrolyte film. It is illustrated that tuning of solid loading rates and spray passes can affect …10>

Food contact materials (FCMs) are materials that come in contact with food products such as food packaging which play a significant role in the food quality and safety. Plastic, which is a major food packaging material, harms the eco-system, wildlife, and the environment. As a result, numerous researches have been in progress on alternative polymers, which has similar properties as plastic but is also environmentally friendly (biodegradable). In recent years, the utilization of seaweed polysaccharides has piqued interest due to its biodegradability, non-toxicity, antioxidant capabilities, and excellent film formation ability. However, it has a number of drawbacks such as low …

Engineering A High-Throughput Screening Platform For Assessing Developmental Neurotoxicity Throughout Head- Regeneration In Schmidtea Mediterranea, Johnathan James Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The increase in commercially used chemicals that are inadequately evaluated for safety and risk to development has created a reticent threat to human health. Addressing these deficiencies is compounded by limited methodologies to determine the etiology of exposure-related developmental neurotoxicity (DNT). Current means of assessing DNT are largely retrospective and limited by the expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive use of laboratory animal models, thereby motivating a global research effort to produce alternative chemical screening assays. In this work, we have developed a novel high- throughput platform that serves as a new tool to evaluate the effects of exogenous chemical exposure on …
Acclimation Of Contact Impedance And Wrist-Based Pulsatile Signal Measurements Through Electrical Bioimpedance, Diego A. Leon
Acclimation Of Contact Impedance And Wrist-Based Pulsatile Signal Measurements Through Electrical Bioimpedance, Diego A. Leon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to expand the understanding of certain properties of electrodes used for electrical bioimpedance measurements. Specifically, this work investigates the acclimation effect of the skin-electrode interface contact impedance. It also attempts to study the relationship between electrode spacing and amplitude of bioimpedance pulsatile signals. It was found that as soon as dry electrodes are placed on the skin, the contact impedance exponentially decreases until it reaches a constant level. The acclimation time, time to reach a constant contact impedance, is dependent of the electrode size and frequency. Increasing the size of the electrode, as well …

Characterization Of Foamed Warm-Mix Asphalt For Workability And Moisture Damage, Biswajit Kumar Bairgi
Characterization Of Foamed Warm-Mix Asphalt For Workability And Moisture Damage, Biswajit Kumar Bairgi
Civil Engineering ETDs
Warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology reduces the high mixing and compaction temperatures of conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA) by approximately 10 °C to 40 °C. In WMA technology, instead of increasing the binder-aggregate temperature, the volume of asphalt is increased by injecting water into hot asphalt at high air pressure. The amount of water injected in the binder is typically determined by a trial and error process and is termed as foaming water content (FWC). Once the FWC is in contact with the hot asphalt binder, it turns into vapor with a rapid volume expansion due …

A Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry approach was used to investigate the anisotropic dielectric constants of corundum α-(AlxGa1-x)2O3 thin films in their below bandgap spectral regions. The sample set was epitaxially grown using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on m-plane sapphire. The spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were performed at multiple azimuthal angles to resolve the uniaxial dielectric properties. A Cauchy dispersion model was applied, and high-frequency dielectric constants are determined for polarization perpendicular (ε∞,⟂) and parallel (ε∞,∥) to the thin film c-axis. The optical birefringence is negative throughout the …

Over the last decades, electricity generation from natural gas has substantially increased, mostly driven by low natural gas prices due to fracturing and lower extraction costs. The geographic distance between natural gas resources and load centers calls for a holistic tool for joint expansion of power systems and natural gas networks. In this paper, a Dynamic Stochastic Joint Expansion Planning (DSJEP) of power systems and natural gas networks is proposed to minimize the investment and operational costs of power and natural gas systems. Electrical and natural gas storage (ENGS) are considered as an option for decision-makers in the DSJEP problem. …

The electrochemical interaction of oxide ions with tungsten electrodes in molten calcium chloride (CaCl2) was analyzed by combining electroanalytical techniques with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. During a cyclic voltammetry (CV) scan, the oxide ions appear to interact with the tungsten working electrode via a multi-step oxidation and reduction process. The overall redox peaks behave reversibly up to 750 mV/s. This electrochemical process enables the oxide ion concentration to be correlated to CV oxidation peaks. The resulting correlation agrees well (8.8% difference) with back titration measurements and can be used to monitor oxide content in the salt in real-time during …

Application Of Tilt Correlation Statistics To Anisoplanatic Optical Turbulence Modeling And Mitigation, Russell C. Hardie, Michael A. Rucci, Santasri Bose-Pillai, Richard Van Hook
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Atmospheric optical turbulence can be a significant source of image degradation, particularly in long range imaging applications. Many turbulence mitigation algorithms rely on an optical transfer function (OTF) model that includes the Fried parameter. We present anisoplanatic tilt statistics for spherical wave propagation. We transform these into 2D autocorrelation functions that can inform turbulence modeling and mitigation algorithms. Using these, we construct an OTF model that accounts for image registration. We also propose a spectral ratio Fried parameter estimation algorithm that is robust to camera motion and requires no specialized scene content or sources. We employ the Fried parameter estimation …

Scene Motion Detection In Imagery With Anisoplanatic Optical Turbulence Using A Tilt-Variance-Based Gaussian Mixture Model, Richard L. Van Hook, Russell C. Hardie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In long-range imaging applications, anisoplanatic atmospheric optical turbulence imparts spatially- and temporally varying blur and geometric distortions in acquired imagery. The ability to distinguish true scene motion from turbulence warping is important for many image-processing and analysis tasks. The authors present a scenemotion detection algorithm specifically designed to operate in the presence of anisoplanatic optical turbulence. The method models intensity fluctuations in each pixel with a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The GMM uses knowledge of the turbulence tilt-variance statistics. We provide both quantitative and qualitative performance analyses and compare the proposed method to several state-of-the art algorithms. The image data …

This work studies the propagation characteristics of a rectangular waveguide with aligned/ misaligned double-sided dielectric-filled metallic corrugations. Two modes are found to propagate in the proposed double-sided configuration below the hollow-waveguide cutoff frequency: a quasi-resonant mode and a backward mode. This is in contrast to the single-sided configuration, which only allows for backward propagation. Moreover, the double-sided configuration can be of interest for waveguide miniaturization on account of the broader band of its backward mode. The width of the stopband between the quasi-resonant and backward modes can be controlled by the misalignment of the top and bottom corrugations, being null …

A Two-Stage Peer-To-Peer Energy Trading Model For Distribution Systems With Participation Of Utility, Y. Liu, L. Wu, Jie Li
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
With the growing penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) in distribution systems, the traditional utility dominated tariff-based business model may no longer meet the need for further development. As a result, the transformation from the traditional tariff-based business model to the emerging peer-to-peer energy trading model has been acknowledged by researchers and policy makers. In this paper, a two-stage peer-to peer energy trading model is proposed while considering the role of the utility. Specifically, energy transactions between buyers and sellers are optimized in the first stage; the cleared transactions are submitted to the utility for approval in the second stage, …

This study assesses streamflow predictions generated by two distributed hydrologic models, the Hillslope Link Model (HLM) and the National Water Model (NWM), driven by three radar-based precipitation forcing datasets. These forcing data include the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS), and the Iowa Flood Center's single-polarization-based (IFC-SP) and dual-polarization-based (IFC-DP) products. To examine forcing-and model-dependent aspects of the representation of hydrologic processes, we mixed and matched all forcing data and models, and simulated streamflow for 2016–18 based on six forcing–model combinations. The forcing product evaluation using independent ground reference data showed that the IFC-DP radar-only product's accuracy is comparable to MRMS, which is …

Effect Of Crystal Quality On Twinning Stress In Ni–Mn–Ga Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys, Andrew Armstrong, Peter Müllner
Effect Of Crystal Quality On Twinning Stress In Ni–Mn–Ga Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys, Andrew Armstrong, Peter Müllner
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Low twinning stress (TS) is a prerequisite for magnetic shape memory functionality in ferromagnetic martensites. We compare Ni50Mn28Ga22 (nominal at.%) single crystals from four different producers to reveal the effect of crystal quality on the TS. Near the reverse martensite transformation, the TS is generally low, about 1 MPa, regardless of mosaicity of up to 1.7° and chemical composition deviations of up to 2 at.% of Mn. Pure type I and type II twin boundaries occur in crystals with smooth chemical composition gradients. The corresponding temperature dependences of TS follow universal linear trends with the …

Lateral field emission devices have been characterized and degradation tested for >1000 h to study stability and reliability. Two types of planar device structures, diode and bowtie, were studied. These nanoscale devices have 10–20 nm tip to tip or tip to collector dimensions with the tips fabricated from Au/Ti. Typical currents of 2–6 nA at 6 V were measured. The devices were placed on lifetime tests in a vacuum of < 10−8 Torr and biased at 6 V DC for >1000 h. Seven total devices were tested with one failing at 300 h. and three of the devices showed < 5% degradation in current until 1400 h when testing was stopped, and three other devices showed a sudden drop of ≈20% ranging from 700 to 900 h. Optical microscope images of one of the devices that failed catastrophically at 350 h show physical arc damage where the bond pad narrows to the emitter trace. Scanning electron microscope images of a bowtie part that completed 1400 h of operation showed no obvious erosion or damage to the tips.

Handwritten numeral recognition is a challenging research problem because of the enormous varieties of styles in which human beings write the numerals. Several researchers have tried to find solutions to this problem with exceptional recognition accuracies. However, most of these solutions have been dedicated to single script numerals. Such methods are inappropriate for multi-lingual nations such as India where a large number of scripts are used. Keeping this issue in mind, a new feature descriptor named symbolization of binary images (SBI) is introduced here for the recognition of handwritten numerals of different scripts. Effectiveness of SBI is supported …
