Mxene-Enabled Wearable Biosensors: A Design Framework For Autonomous Biosensing, Jegan Rajendran, Gymama Slaughter

Center for Bioelectronics Publications

MXenes, a rapidly expanding family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, have emerged as leading materials for wearable bioelectronics due to their metallic conductivity, termination-rich surfaces, mechanical compliance, and tunable interlayer structures. However, wearable biosensor performance does not arise from conductivity alone, but from coupled interactions among surface termination chemistry, heterointerface engineering, hierarchical architecture, and device integration under dynamic physiological conditions. This review establishes a predictive structure-interface-device framework linking MXene chemistry to system-level performance across electrochemical, mechanical, gas, optical, and energy-storage modalities. We analyze how termination-controlled adsorption governs charge transfer and selectivity, how heterojunction formation modulates carrier density and …

Perception Of Transportation Challenges And Their Influence On Mode Choice In A Small Us City: A Generalized Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Anindya Kishore Debnath, Suman Kumar Mitra

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study profiles individuals encountering transportation challenges by analyzing factors influencing their perceptions and how they affect mode choice decisions in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Using primary travel survey data, we estimated a multinomial logit (MNL) within a Generalized Structural Equation Model (GSEM) that controls for residential self-selection and car ownership endogeneity. We find that individuals from low-income households are more likely to perceive transportation challenges, particularly due to a lack of a car and inadequate public transport. Higher household car ownership generally diminishes perceived challenges, except regarding limited bike lanes. Weekend or late-shift workers are more likely to own cars …

Impact Of Dispersed Crystalline Domains On Lithium-Ion Conductivity In Amorphous Li2.99ba0.005ocl Electrolytes, Emmanuel Olugbade, Junquan Ou, Leon Shaw, Jonghyun Park

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solid-state electrolytes promise safer, high-energy batteries, yet ionic transport is limited by structural heterogeneity and interfacial resistance. We combine hydrothermal synthesis and molecular dynamics (MD) to determine how dispersed crystallinity and interfacial orientation govern lithium-ion conduction in barium-doped anti-perovskite Li2.99Ba0.005OCl. Structural and thermal analyses identify a largely amorphous matrix with embedded nano crystallites, and MD captures the same short-range order and dispersion seen experimentally. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy separates high amorphous-phase conductivity from a pellet-scale response dominated by interfacial limitations, consistent with direct-current polarization. Cyclic voltammetry indicates a broad electrochemical stability window. We quantify transport in crystalline …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing process in which a concentrated laser beam selectively melts successive powder layers to fabricate components. Final part quality is highly sensitive to process parameters such as hatch spacing, powder bed density, laser power, and scanning speed. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics model employing discrete element method has been developed in FLOW-3D to simulate LPBF of Inconel 718. The modeled powder bed incorporates particle size distribution data obtained from scanning electron microscopy and is evaluated for single-layer, single-track deposition over a circular cavity. The model captured melt pool dynamics …

Distributed Vibration Sensing For Identification Of Loose Connectors In Coaxial Data Transmission Lines, Saidanvar Esanjonovich Valiev, Anthony C. Okafor, Jeremiah J. Rittenhouse, Jie Huang, Daniel S. Stutts

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigates the effect of vibration-induced loose connections on signal reflection (S11) for loose connection identification in aerospace coaxial cables using distributed sensing approach, which is effective in filtering the noise and identifying minor discontinuities. In this approach, a sliding gated window is applied to S11 signal, a fast Fourier transform is performed over the gated windows, cross-correlation is computed between the baseline and vibration-affected signals, and the standard deviation is mapped along the cable length. Sinewave signals from 9 kHz to 5 GHz were swept through cables with vibrating connectors under three conditions: fully tightened, loosened by 180°, …

Nonlinear Control Of A Ciws-Style 2-Dof Turret, Ryan Baur, Ethan Wang, Nilay Kant Jan 2026

Nonlinear Control Of A Ciws-Style 2-Dof Turret, Ryan Baur, Ethan Wang, Nilay Kant

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops and compares multiple control strategies for a two-degree-of-freedom CIWS (Close-In Weapon System)-style turret tracking rapidly maneuvering airborne targets. A simplified nonlinear manipulator model with realistic actuator torque limits is used as the plant. Five controllers are implemented: a baseline PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller, a feedforward PID, a Kalman-filter-assisted PID, and two feedback-linearized designs using PID and LQR (Linear-Quadratic-Regulator)-based surrogate dynamics. Controller performance is evaluated on increasingly aggressive three-dimensional target trajectories under varying sensor noise. Results show that PID-family controllers achieve competitive tracking accuracy while remaining torque-efficient and largely unsaturated. Feedback-linearized controllers improve tracking accuracy only when sufficient actuator …

Tomo-Piv Study Of A Parallel Two-Dimensional Jet In Supersonic Flow, Josiah Mcdermott, Connor Bell, Davide Vigano

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stabilizing combustion in supersonic flows is a formidable challenge due to the small time scales afforded for air-fuel mixing. Numerous studies in this area have demonstrated the potential of strut-style platforms for fuel injection and mixing enhancement, which remains an active area of research. In the Aerodynamics Research Laboratory at Missouri S&T, a strut-style injector system has recently been installed. In this study, we characterize the flow structures behind this platform in a range of injection pressures and corresponding mass flux ratios. The wake generated by a strut and injection plume, even absent combustion or mixing enhancement geometry, has an …

Supersonic Wind Tunnel Free Stream Turbulence Characterization Using 2-Point Focused Laser Differential Interferometry, Joseph Villarreal, Joshua Gary, Davide Vigano

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Non-intrusive laser-based diagnostics, such as Two-Point Focused Laser Differential Interfer-ometry (2-FLDI), play a crucial role in modern aerodynamic research by enabling simultaneous measurements of density and velocity in compressible flows. A 2-FLDI system has been developed and implemented for the Missouri S&T Supersonic Wind Tunnel to characterize free stream turbulence fluctuations and free stream convective velocity. Design choices that enabled the 2-FLDI to overcome low turbulence to measure free stream velocity are detailed. The free stream velocity measurements are validated against previous particle image velocimetry data, showing good agreement. Analysis of normalized velocities and density-based turbulence intensities found that the …

2-Point Focused Laser Differential Interferometry Measurements Of A Parallel Jet In Supersonic Flow, Joshua Gary, Joseph Villarreal, Davide Vigano

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Turbulence in compressible flows plays a central role in applications such as air-fuel mixing in supersonic combustors and is significantly more complex than incompressible turbulence due to the presence of fluctuating thermodynamic quantities. As such, models like the Strong Reynolds Analogy (SRA) are used to relate these quantities. However, SRA validity has been examined primarily in boundary-layer flows. In this work, a newly developed Two-Point Focused Laser Differential Interferometry (2-FLDI) system is implemented in a two-dimensional parallel supersonic jet. The diagnostic is described in detail, including optical alignment procedures, calibration methods, and data analysis techniques. Measurements acquired at multiple streamwise …

Adaptive Machine Learning Framework For Microstructural Optimization And Mechanical Performance Prediction In Steels, Henry Adekola Haffner Jan 2026

Adaptive Machine Learning Framework For Microstructural Optimization And Mechanical Performance Prediction In Steels, Henry Adekola Haffner

Doctoral Dissertations

Evolution of microstructures, such as polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, bainite, and martensite, plays a pivotal role in determining the final microstructural and mechanical properties of steel products. Given the established inter-relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, properties, and performance, precise control of phase transformation is essential to achieve pre-determined properties. To understand transformation routes in different steel grades, time-temperature-transformation (TTT) and continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams are necessary and can be described using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov equation and Scheil’s additivity rule. This study presents a comprehensive computational framework for predicting and optimizing microstructure and mechanical properties in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) using adaptive machine …

Enhancing The Performance Of Disk-Based Key-Value Stores: From Learned Index Acceleration To I/O-Efficient Hybrid Caching, Sujit Maharjan Jan 2026

Enhancing The Performance Of Disk-Based Key-Value Stores: From Learned Index Acceleration To I/O-Efficient Hybrid Caching, Sujit Maharjan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The exponential growth of data in modern computing environments has rendered the efficient extraction of information from massive datasets a critical systemic requirement. Key-value (KV) storage systems serve as the backbone for these operations; however, their performance is consistently bottlenecked by two primary functional requirements: identifying the data's location and managing the physical cost of accessing the storage device. Data locations are typically identified via an index, while disk I/O is minimized through caching. This dissertation presents LearnedStore, TurboIndex, and ReadBooster, which break these performance bottlenecks by introducing architectural modifications to the index and cache. LearnedStore accelerates operations by adapting …

Adaptive Synchronization In Digital Twin–Enabled Iot Systems: A Unified Framework For Energy, Fidelity, And Latency Trade-Offs, Uzma Zehra

Computer Science and Engineering Theses

Digital twin technology has emerged as a foundational paradigm for enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and control in Internet of Things (IoT) systems by maintaining virtual representations of physical processes. Its effectiveness, however, critically depends on timely and accurate synchronization between distributed sensing devices and their corresponding digital counterparts. Frequent synchronization improves reconstruction fidelity and system responsiveness but incurs significant communication energy consumption and network latency. In contrast, infrequent synchronization conserves communication resources but can lead to stale or inaccurate digital twin states, particularly in environments with rapidly changing dynamics. These opposing effects give rise to a fundamental trade-off among energy …

Performance Evaluation Of Modified Moisture Barrier For Subgrade Stabilization Of Pavements On Expansive Soils, Md Tamim Shahriar Jan 2026

Performance Evaluation Of Modified Moisture Barrier For Subgrade Stabilization Of Pavements On Expansive Soils, Md Tamim Shahriar

Civil Engineering Theses

Expansive soils inflict an estimated nine to fifteen billion dollars in annual damage to infrastructure across the United States, surpassing the combined losses from earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes (Nelson and Miller, 1997; Jones and Jefferson, 2012). In Texas, eighteen of twenty-five TxDOT districts contend with pavement failure rooted in moisture-driven volume change of subgrade clay, consuming roughly twenty-five percent of the agency's annual budget for maintenance and repair (Sebesta, 2002; Wanyan et al., 2010). Conventional remediation approaches, including soil replacement, chemical stabilization with lime or cement, and prewetting, are either prohibitively expensive, unsuitable for high-sulfate soils, or confined to …

A Four-Step Thermocatalytic Route For Converting Co2 Into High-Purity Oxalic Acid, Hao Feng, Muhammad Kashif Khan, Lei Li, Hongyan Ma, Xinhua Liang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This research outlines a four-step methodology for transforming CO2 into high-purity oxalic acid. CO2 was first sequestered as KHCO3 through its reaction with aqueous KOH, followed by hydrogenation using a supported AgPd/CNT catalyst in a batch reactor at an initial H2 pressure of 60 bar and a temperature of 150°C. The formate yield reached 91.8% at optimum conditions. Potassium formate in the solid state was thermally coupled in the presence of KOH at 400°C under N2 flow, yielding potassium oxalate of up to 76% yield. The final step was the selective precipitation of potassium oxalate with ferrous …

Agricultural Productivity Under Energy Development: Insights From California, Wai Yan Siu, Sherzod B. Akhundjanov Jan 2026

Agricultural Productivity Under Energy Development: Insights From California, Wai Yan Siu, Sherzod B. Akhundjanov

ODU Articles

This paper examines how agricultural productivity patterns in Kern County, California, a leading region for both agricultural production and oil and gas development, co-vary with the spatial and temporal expansion of hydraulic fracturing and associated energy infrastructure. Using parcel- and county-level analyses, we characterize how agricultural productivity differs across proximity to energy development and across spatial scales. The results reveal spatially heterogeneous and scale-dependent patterns: parcel-level evidence indicates lower Enhanced Vegetation Index-based vegetation productivity within the 20-mile proximity zone around fracking wells, while county-level results show heterogeneous crop-specific yield changes during the post-expansion period. Together, these findings highlight the importance …

Peculiarities Of Phosphatidylserine Externalization By Nano- And Microsecond Electric Pulses, Mantas Silkunas, Alayna Enos, Iurii Semenov, Giedre Silkuniene, Eleni Zivla, Olga N. Pakhomova, Andrei G. Pakhomov

Bioelectrics Publications

Phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization is a hallmark of apoptosis but can also be triggered within seconds by pulsed electric fields (PEFs). Whether PS reaches the outer leaflet by lateral migration through electropores or indirectly through Ca²+-dependent signaling and scramblase activation remains debated. We used total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy with Annexin V-Alexa Fluor 568 and/or bovine lactadherin-FITC to resolve PS externalization in HEK293 cells placed on an indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent electrode. PEF exposures produced discrete PS-positive puncta ("freckles") within ~ 10 s after a 20-µs pulse (1.2-2.5 kV/cm) or with a ~ 1-min delay after a …

Array Signal Processing And Machine Learning In 5g/6g Networks, Roopesh Kumar Polaganga

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation investigates advanced methodologies in Array Signal Processing (ASP) and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance the performance, efficiency, and intelligence of next-generation wireless networks, with a primary focus on 5G and emerging 6G systems. As wireless networks face rapid traffic growth, increasingly heterogeneous service requirements, and more complex propagation environments, conventional design and optimization approaches become insufficient to meet evolving demands in reliability, capacity, spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency. On the network intelligence side, this work develops data-driven frameworks for causal discovery, scheduler enhancement, session-duration prediction, and Radio Resource Control (RRC) state optimization using real-world telecommunication network data. On …

Passive Communication Across Diverse Swarm Formations And Scales Utilizing Wake Signatures For Messaging And Object Inference, Bryan Varela Jan 2026

Passive Communication Across Diverse Swarm Formations And Scales Utilizing Wake Signatures For Messaging And Object Inference, Bryan Varela

Open Access Master's Theses

Passive wake signatures in fluid flows can support perception and low-rate communication in swarms. In cluttered or contested underwater environments, conventional acoustic, radio, and optical links can be power-hungry, intermittent, or undesirable when low observability is required. Wake-mediated cues offer a local, directional channel that does not require line of sight because each agent naturally sheds coherent vortices that persist downstream and can be sampled by followers with only a small number of probes.

This study evaluates whether sparse downstream probes are sufficient to infer agent attributes and decode simple messages from wakes generated by established source shapes. Computational fluid …

Peel Strength Of Polyurethane Coated Marine Metals In Air And In Underwater Environments, Maximillian Hill

Open Access Master's Theses

This study aims to characterize the hydrostatic peel strength of a hyperplastic material on three distinct and widely used marine-grade metals, using a primer. Aluminum 6061, HY-80 steel, and Nickel 400 (commonly known as Monel) are among the more popular metals used in the marine industry due to their unique material properties. To better understand the relationship of these materials and how we might quantify them, a peel test is performed at varying curing temperatures.

Following the investigation into varying curing temperatures, several specific marine environments will be considered. Submersible marine vehicles are designed to operate in a range of …

An Investigation Of Quiet Bunks For Improved Rest On Marine Vessels, Jacob Milman Jan 2026

An Investigation Of Quiet Bunks For Improved Rest On Marine Vessels, Jacob Milman

Open Access Master's Theses

Those who spend an extended period of time living in a marine setting (e.g. living and working on a research/commercial vessel) are subject to a variety of annoying/disturbing noises during periods of sleep. Numerous past studies (Kim et al., 2024; Sunde et al., 2016; Li et al., 2024) have linked noise exposure levels and poor sleep to health and safety risks, both in personal and professional settings. Thus, it is necessary to take a closer look at the typical levels of noise exposure which mariners aboard a research vessel are subjected to, as well as any factors relating to personal …

Ensemble Dependence Of Mechanical Relaxation In Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Mason E. Hyde

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis investigates whether the selection of thermodynamic ensemble introduces quantifiable differences in the stress relaxation modulus G(t), storage modulus G”(w), loss modulus G”(w), and phase angle d(w) computed from equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of the AAA-1 asphalt model. A 72-molecule, 12-component representation of AAA-1 bitumen was simulated under three ensembles (NPT, NVT, and NVE) at three temperatures (400.15 K, 443.15 K, and 533.15 K) with three independent replications at each condition, yielding 27 total simulations. Stress autocorrelation functions were computed from each production trajectory and Fourier-transformed to obtain frequency-dependent rheological properties.

The computed properties …

Noninvasive Optical Assessment Of Tissue Hemodynamics In Preterm Infants And Mastectomy Skin Flaps, Samaneh Rabienia Haratbar

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Adequate tissue blood flow and oxygenation are essential for maintaining cellular viability and normal organ function. Disruptions in microvascular perfusion and oxygen delivery contribute to ischemia- and hypoxia-related diseases, including stroke, cancer, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and mastectomy skin flap necrosis. Reliable, noninvasive approaches for assessing tissue hemodynamics are therefore critical for improving diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making, particularly in settings where conventional methods are limited. This dissertation investigates the clinical and physiological importance of measuring tissue blood flow and oxygenation across neonatal and surgical applications using both clinical monitoring and advanced optical imaging techniques. In the first study, high-speed pulse …

Mental Health And Help-Seeking In Engineering Education: Beliefs, Norms, And Intervention Pathways For Undergraduate Students, Matthew D. Whitwer

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Engineering education is at a critical juncture where supporting student mental health is essential for fostering persistence, equity, and the development of a resilient and innovative workforce. While engineering students experience high levels of distress and low rates of mental health treatment seeking (known as a mental health treatment gap), there is a gap in knowledge around how this compares to that of students in other fields of study. Further, while efforts have been made to improve the mental health treatment gap in engineering, they are limited by a lack of actionable, theory-based targets. Therefore, this dissertation aims to characterize …

A Specification-Driven Framework For Self-Supervised Learning In Specialized Vision Domains, Mahmut S. Gokmen Jan 2026

A Specification-Driven Framework For Self-Supervised Learning In Specialized Vision Domains, Mahmut S. Gokmen

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has emerged as a principled approach to visual representation learning that derives supervisory signal directly from unlabeled data, enabling foundation models to be trained at scale without manual annotation. Deployments in medical imaging and biometric recognition have demonstrated the potential of this paradigm, yet the assumptions that make SSL effective on natural image benchmarks fail systematically in specialized domains. Generic SSL pipelines encode a tacit assumption that the most informative correspondence is spatial proximity within a single acquisition. In specialized domains this assumption breaks at the level of the data-generating process: the signal that carries domain-specific information …
