Near-Field Imaging Of Plasmonic Nanopatch Antennas With Integrated Semiconductor Quantum Dots, Vasudevan Iyer, Yoong Sheng Phang, Andrew Butler, Jiyang Chen, Brian Lerner, Christos Argyropoulos, Thang Hoang, Benjamin Lawrie

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Plasmonic nanopatch antennas that incorporate dielectric gaps hundreds of picometers to several nanometers thick have drawn increasing attention over the past decade because they confine electromagnetic fields to grossly sub-diffraction-limited volumes. Substantial control over the optical properties of excitons and color centers confined within these plasmonic cavities has already been demonstrated with far-field optical spectroscopies, but near-field optical spectroscopies are essential for an improved understanding of the plasmon–emitter interaction at the nanoscale. Here, we characterize the intensity and phase-resolved plasmonic response of isolated nanopatch antennas by cathodoluminescence microscopy. Furthermore, we explore the distinction between optical and electron beam spectroscopies of …

On The Need To Determine Accurately The Impact Of Higher-Order Sensitivities On Model Sensitivity Analysis, Uncertainty Quantification And Best-Estimate Predictions, Dan Gabriel Cacuci Oct 2021

On The Need To Determine Accurately The Impact Of Higher-Order Sensitivities On Model Sensitivity Analysis, Uncertainty Quantification And Best-Estimate Predictions, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This work aims at underscoring the need for the accurate quantification of the sensitivities (i.e., functional derivatives) of the results (a.k.a. “responses”) produced by large-scale computational models with respect to the models’ parameters, which are seldom known perfectly in practice. The large impact that can arise from sensitivities of order higher than first has been highlighted by the results of a third-order sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of an OECD/NEA reactor physics benchmark, which will be briefly reviewed in this work to underscore that neglecting the higher-order sensitivities causes substantial errors in predicting the expectation and variance of model responses. The …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Agrichemicals, chemicals used to maximize crop and animal production, can lead to water quality concerns when these chemicals run off into surface and groundwater after precipitation events. In Nebraska, one such chemical is atrazine, a suspected carcinogen. This study evaluated the association between atrazine in surface and groundwater, in relation to the incidence of pediatric cancer in Nebraska watersheds over 30 years (1 January 1987 to 31 December 2016). The watersheds were grouped into four categories based on the average atrazine concentration over the study period, using quantile classification. The associations between atrazine (ground/surface) and pediatric cancer after adjusting for …

Effects Of A Hole On Uplifting Forces On A Submerged Horizontal Thin Plate, Deng How Tsaur, Shyh Rong Her Oct 2021

Effects Of A Hole On Uplifting Forces On A Submerged Horizontal Thin Plate, Deng How Tsaur, Shyh Rong Her

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The effect of a hole on uplifting forces acting on a submerged horizontal thin plate are examined using the boundary element method. To deal with the submerged thin plate case, which is a degenerate boundary problem, a hypersingular integral equation is employed to overcome some troubles when the boundary element method is used. Two-dimensional problems are considered, and the linear gravity wave theory is adopted. Several examples are calculated and the numerical results are presented to show the influence of a hole on uplifting forces.

Rapid Selection Of Moving Wagons In The Sequence Of Video Frames Based On The Method Of Calculating The Optical Flow, Bahodir Muminov Prof.

Bulletin of TUIT: Management and Communication Technologies

With the advent of digital video cameras, it has become possible to process measurement data using a computer, which has led to a wide range of new tasks in digital signal processing. Examples of such tasks are perimeter observation and detection of a moving object, recognition of a moving object, and identification of an object. Research and development of algorithms for processing video data, as a rule, requires a time-consuming computational experiment on model and real data of a large volume. Therefore, it is important to correctly organize the computational process when modifying and testing algorithms.

An Application Of An Unequal-Area Facilities Layout Problem With Fixed-Shape Facilities, Alan Mckendall, Artak Hakobyan

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The unequal-area facility layout problem (UA-FLP) is the problem of locating rectangular facilities on a rectangular floor space such that facilities do not overlap while optimizing some objective. The objective considered in this paper is minimizing the total distance materials travel between facilities. The UA-FLP considered in this paper considers facilities with fixed dimension and was motivated by the investigation of layout options for a production area at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV) plant in Buffalo, WV, USA. This paper presents a mathematical model and a genetic algorithm for locating facilities on a continuous plant floor. More specifically, …

Thin Safety Margin: The Sefor Super-Prompt-Critical Transient Experiments, Ozark Mountains, Arkansas 1970–1971, Jerry Havens, Collis Geren

Arkansas Scholarly Editions

Thin Safety Margin charts the history of SEFOR, a twenty-megawatt reactor that operated for three years in the rural Ozark Mountains of Arkansas as part of an internationally sponsored program designed to demonstrate the Doppler effect in plutonium-oxide-fueled fast reactors. Authors Jerry Havens and Collis Geren draw upon this history to assess the accidental explosion risk inherent in using fast reactors to reduce the energy industry’s carbon dioxide emissions.

If a sufficiently powerful fast-neutron explosion were to cause the containment of a reactor such as SEFOR’s to fail, the reactor’s radiotoxic plutonium fuel could vaporize and escape into the surrounding …

Design Optimization And Experimental Study Of Coreless Axial-Flux Pm Machines With Wave Winding Pcb Stators, Peng Han, Damien Lawhorn, Yaser Chulaee, Donovin Lewis, Greg Heins, Dan M. Ionel

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

This paper presents a systematic design optimization and experimental study of coreless axial-flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines with wave winding printed circuit board (PCB) stators. Existing PCB winding configurations are briefly reviewed and compared to serve as a performance reference. A new concept –the “macro coil”– is proposed to model PCB stator windings in 3D finite element analysis (FEA) to facilitate large-scale multi-objective optimization with the winding eddy current losses evaluated in each design candidate. The detailed trace-by-trace model for a selected optimal design is then built to check the voltage difference between parallel paths and the resulting circulating currents. …

Crest Or Trough? How Research Libraries Used Emerging Technologies To Survive The Pandemic, So Far, Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Introduction

In the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was impossible to tell if we were at the crest of a wave of new transmissions, or a trough of a much larger wave, still yet to peak. As of this writing, as colleges and universities prepare for mostly in-person fall 2021 semesters, case counts in the United States are increasing again after a decline that coincided with easier access to the COVID vaccine. Plans for a return to campus made with confidence this spring may be in doubt, as we climb the curve of what is already the second …

Systematic Review And Regression Modeling Of The Effects Of Age, Body Size, And Exercise On Cardiovascular Parameters In Healthy Adults, Aseem Pradhan, John Scaringi, Patrick Gerard, Ross Arena, Jonathan Myers, Leonard A. Kaminsky, Ethan Kung

Publications

Purpose

Blood pressure, cardiac output, and ventricular volumes correlate to various subject features such as age, body size, and exercise intensity. The purpose of this study is to quantify this correlation through regression modeling.

Methods

We conducted a systematic review to compile reference data of healthy subjects for several cardiovascular parameters and subject features. Regression algorithms used these aggregate data to formulate predictive models for the outputs—systolic and diastolic blood pressure, ventricular volumes, cardiac output, and heart rate—against the features—age, height, weight, and exercise intensity. A simulation-based procedure generated data of virtual subjects to test whether these regression models built …

Plaque Contact Surface Area And Flow Lumen Volume Predict Stroke Risk In Extracranial Carotid Artery Stenosis, Ryan Gendey, Ethan Kung, Veena Mehta, Adam Brown, Matthew Bridges, Ravi Veeraswamy

Publications

The standard indication for intervention in asymptomatic disease is currently percent stenosis in the internal carotid artery as measured by the NASCET method, which remains limited in discriminating power. CT angiography (CTA) is widely used to calculate NASCET stenosis but also offers the opportunity to analyze carotid artery plaques from a morphological perspective that has not been widely utilized. We aim to improve stroke risk stratification of patients with carotid artery stenosis using plaque 3D modeling and image analysis. Patients with CTAs appropriate for 3D reconstruction were identified from an NIH designated stroke center database, and carotid arteries were segmented …

Deep Convolutional Correlation Particle Filter For Visual Tracking, Reza Jalil Mozhdehi Oct 2021

Deep Convolutional Correlation Particle Filter For Visual Tracking, Reza Jalil Mozhdehi

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, we explore the advantages and limitations of the application of sequential Monte Carlo methods to visual tracking, which is a challenging computer vision problem. We propose six visual tracking models, each of which integrates a particle filter, a deep convolutional neural network, and a correlation filter. In our first model, we generate an image patch corresponding to each particle and use a convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract features from the corresponding image region. A correlation filter then computes the correlation response maps corresponding to these features, which are used to determine the particle weights and estimate …

Machine Learning For High-Fidelity Prediction Of Cement Hydration Kinetics In Blended Systems, Rachel Cook, Taihao Han, Alaina Childers, Cambria Ryckman, Kamal Khayat, Hongyan Ma, Jie Huang, Aditya Kumar

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), the most broadly utilized man-made material, has been scrutinized due to its contributions to global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Thus -- to mitigate CO2 emissions -- mineral additives have been promulgated as partial replacements for OPC. However, additives -- depending on their physiochemical characteristics -- can exert varying effects on OPC's hydration kinetics. Therefore -- in regards to more complex systems -- it is infeasible for semi-empirical kinetic models to reveal the underlying nonlinear composition-property (i.e., reactivity) relationships. In the past decade or so, machine learning (ML) has arisen as a promising, …

Replication Data For: Evaluation Of Model Concepts To Describe Water Transport In Shallow Subsurface Soil And Across The Soil–Air Interface, Zhen Li, Kathleen Smits

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

Soil water evaporation plays a critical role in mass and energy exchanges across the land–atmosphere interface. Although much is known about this process, there is no agreement on the best modeling approaches to determine soil water evaporation due to the complexity of the numerical modeling scenarios and lack of experimental data available to validate such models. Existing studies show numerical and experimental discrepancies in the evaporation behavior and soil water distribution in soils at various scales, driving us to revisit the key process representation in subsurface soil. Therefore, the goal of this work is to test different mathematical formulations used …

Replication Data For: The Effect Of The Top Soil Layer On Moisture And Evaporation Dynamics, Zhen Li, Kathleen Smits Oct 2021

Replication Data For: The Effect Of The Top Soil Layer On Moisture And Evaporation Dynamics, Zhen Li, Kathleen Smits

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

Understanding the effect of the top soil layer on surface evaporation and water distribution is critical to modeling hydrological systems. However, the dependency of near-surface soil moisture and fluxes on layering characteristics remains unclear. To address this uncertainty, we investigate how the arrangement of soil horizons affects the evaporation and soil moisture, specifically, the near-surface soil moisture, through the combination of numerical simulations and evaporation experiments. The characteristics of fluxes and moisture from different soil profiles are then used to understand the soil layering conditions. Results show that the top soil layer can significantly affect the evolution of soil moisture …
