Any effort to combat corruption can benefit from an examination of past and projected worldwide trends. In this paper, we forecast the level of corruption in countries by integrating artificial neural network modeling and time series analysis. The data were obtained from 113 countries from 2007 to 2017. The study is carried out at two levels: (a) the global level, where all countries are considered as a monolithic group; and (b) the cluster level, where countries are placed into groups based on their development-related attributes. For each cluster, we use the findings from our previous study on the cluster analysis …

Streaming Instability With Multiple Dust Species-Ii. Turbulence And Dust-Gas Dynamics At Non-Linear Saturation, Chao-Chin Yang, Zhaohuan Zhu
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
The streaming instability is a fundamental process that can drive dust-gas dynamics and ultimately planetesimal formation in protoplanetary discs. As a linear instability, it has been shown that its growth with a distribution of dust sizes can be classified into two distinct regimes, fast-and slow-growth, depending on the dust-size distribution and the total dust-To-gas density ratio . Using numerical simulations of an unstratified disc, we bring three cases in different regimes into non-linear saturation. We find that the saturation states of the two fast-growth cases are similar to its single-species counterparts. The one with maximum dimensionless stopping time τs,max = …

Advanced control techniques may be used to establish a virtual power plant to regulate the operation of electric water heaters, which may be regarded as a “uni-directional battery” and a major component of a hybrid residential energy storage system. In order to estimate the potential of regulating water heaters at the aggregated level, factors including user behavior, number of water heaters, and types of water heaters must be considered. This study develops generic water heater load curves based on the data retrieved from large experimental projects for resistive electric water heaters (EWHs) and heat pump water heaters (HPWHs). A community-level …
Dynamical System And Parameter Identification For Power Systems, Abdullah Abdulrahman Alassaf
Dynamical System And Parameter Identification For Power Systems, Abdullah Abdulrahman Alassaf
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The complexity of dynamical analysis has been growing to suffice the understanding and modeling of dynamical systems. Besides its nonlinearity and high-dimensionality, the dynamics of power systems contain uncertainty that complicates its analysis. Recently, dynamical modeling has been categorized into three types: white-box, black-box, and gray-box. White-box modeling has the accessibility of all system components. Black-box modeling has the observability of the system measurements without knowing the actual system. Gray-box modeling has the observability of the system measurements with the reachability to some of the system components. The scope of this dissertation focuses on black-box and gray-box models to achieve …

Frequency-Dependent Linearity Characterization And Uncertainty Analysis Of The Pace Oci Short-Wave Infrared Detection Assembly, Kenneth Squire, Jacob Hedelius, James Peterson, Eric Gorman, Gerhard Meister
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) will be used to collect data on the health of the planet’s oceans and atmosphere. Essential to OCI is its Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) Detection Assembly (SDA), which measures light at discrete bands of interest. The linearity knowledge of the SDA detectors is crucial for collection of accurate and meaningful scientific data. This document presents the methodology employed in measuring the linearity response of the SDA to optical inputs at various modulation frequencies as well as the accompanying linearity uncertainty analysis.
An Enhanced Predictive Hierarchical Power Management Framework For Islanded Microgrids, Jimiao Zhang, Jie Li, Ning Wang, Ben Wu
An Enhanced Predictive Hierarchical Power Management Framework For Islanded Microgrids, Jimiao Zhang, Jie Li, Ning Wang, Ben Wu
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
This paper proposes an enhanced three-layer predictive hierarchical power management framework for secure and economic operation of islanded microgrids. The tertiary control, guaranteeing the microgrid economic operation, is built upon the semi-definite programming-based AC optimal power flow model, which periodically sends power references to secondary control. To mitigate uncertainties arising from renewable generations and loads, a centralized linear model predictive control (MPC) controller is proposed and implemented for secondary control. The MPC controller can effectively regulate the microgrid system frequency by closely tracking reference signals from the tertiary controller with low computational complexity. Droop-based primary controllers are implemented to coordinate …

In Situ Characterization Of Tensile Behavior Of Laser Rapid Solidified Al–Si Heterogeneous Microstructures, Bingqiang Wei, Wenqian Wu, Dongyue Xie, Huai-Hsun Lien, Metin Kayitmazbatir, Amit Misra, Jian Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Heterogeneous Al–Si microstructure comprising of sub-micron-scale Al dendrites and nanoscale Al–Si fibrous eutectic was fabricated by processing as-cast Al-20wt.%Si alloy using laser rapid solidification. In situ tension tests explored high tensile strength ( ∼ 600 MPa) and ductility ( ∼ 10%) and high strain hardening rate ( ∼ 7 GPa). Microstructural characterization revealed the plastic co[1]deformation mechanisms between soft Al dendrites and hard nanoscale Al–Si eutectic. The progression of plasticity in nanoscale Al–Si eutectic with increasing applied strain is accommodated by dislocation plasticity in the nano-Al channels and cracking Si nanofibers. The propagation of nano-cracks is suppressed by surrounding Al, …

The Internet of Things (IoT) is reshaping modern society by allowing a decent number of RF devices to connect and share information through RF channels. However, such an open nature also brings obstacles to surveillance. For alleviation, a surveillance oracle, or a cognitive communication entity needs to identify and confirm the appearance of known or unknown signal sources in real-time. In this paper, we provide a deep learning framework for RF signal surveillance. Specifically, we jointly integrate the Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and Quickest Detection (QD) to form a sequential signal surveillance scheme. We first analyze the latent space characteristic …
Assessing The Role Of The Pelvic Canal In Supporting The Gut In Humans, Jeanelle Uy, Natalie Laudicina
Assessing The Role Of The Pelvic Canal In Supporting The Gut In Humans, Jeanelle Uy, Natalie Laudicina
Peer Reviewed Articles
The human pelvic canal (true pelvis) functions to support the abdominopelvic organs and serves as a passageway for reproduction (females). Previous research suggests that these two functions work against each other with the expectation that the supportive role results in a narrower pelvic midplane, while fetal passage necessitates a larger opening. In this research, we examine how gut size relates to the size and shape of the true pelvis, which may have implications on how gut size can influence pelvic floor integrity. Pelves and in vivo gut volumes were measured from CT scans of 92 adults (48 female, 44 male). …

Organ-on-a-chip technology has been used in testing small-molecule drugs for screening potential therapeutics and regulatory protocols. The technology is expected to boost the development of novel therapies and accelerate the discovery of drug combinations in the coming years. This has led to the development of multi-organ-on-a-chip (MOC) for recapitulating various organs involved in the drug-body interactions. In this review, we discuss the current MOCs used in screening small-molecule drugs and then focus on the dynamic process of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. We also address appropriate materials used for MOCs at low cost and scale-up capacity suitable for high-performance …

The goal of this research is the in-situ detection of flaw formation in metal parts made using the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing process. This is an important area of research, because, despite the considerable cost and time savings achieved, precision-driven industries, such as aerospace and biomedical, are reticent in using LPBF to make safety–critical parts due to tendency of the process to create flaws. Another emerging concern in LPBF, and additive manufacturing in general, is related to cyber security – malicious actors may tamper with the process or plant flaws inside a part to compromise its performance. …
Chitosan Graphene Composite Fabrication And Characterization For Treatment Of Harmful Algal Blooms And Toxins, Sarah Zetterholm
Chitosan Graphene Composite Fabrication And Characterization For Treatment Of Harmful Algal Blooms And Toxins, Sarah Zetterholm
Master's Theses
Chitosan graphene composites were fabricated and characterized as a management strategy for harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by various species of cyanobacteria. These chitosan graphene materials were compared to previously studied chitosan graphene-oxide composites in both material properties and HAB treatment. In previous studies, adsorption of the cyanobacteria onto the surface of the composite materials has been observed. Investigations of the pure materials for these composites are also included in this study to determine whether removal is a result of charge interactions with the composite, or as an inherent property of the graphene or graphene oxide. Initial results suggest that …

Use Of Average Mutual Information And Derived Measures To Find Coding Regions, Garin Newcomb, Khalid Sayood
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
One of the important steps in the annotation of genomes is the identification of regions in the genome which code for proteins. One of the tools used by most annotation approaches is the use of signals extracted from genomic regions that can be used to identify whether the region is a protein coding region. Motivated by the fact that these regions are information bearing structures we propose signals based on measures motivated by the average mutual information for use in this task. We show that these signals can be used to identify coding and noncoding sequences with high accuracy. We …

Open Source Software Toolchain For Automated Non‐Targeted Screening For Toxins In Alternative Foods, S. W. Breuer, L. Toppen, S. K. Schum, J. M. Pearce
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Previous published methods for non-targeted screening of toxins in alternative foods such as leaf concentrate, agricultural residues or plastic fed to biological consortia are time consuming and expensive and thus present accessibility, as well as, time-constraint issues for scientists from under resourced settings to identify safe alternative foods. The novel methodology presented here, utilizes a completely free and open source software toolchain for automatically screening unknown alternative foods for toxicity using experimental data from ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The process uses three distinct tools (mass spectrometry analysis with MZmine 2, formula assignment with MFAssignR, and data filtering with …

An accurate bathymetric survey is a principal issue in dredging projects because it has a direct impact on the estimated dredging quantities, project process and cost. In this research, various factors affecting the accuracy of bathymetric survey and hence dredging volume quantities have been investigated. The data obtained from single-beam echo sounder surveys after the deepening and widening of Great Bitter Lakes in the New Suez Canal project, which was recently carried out in Egypt, have been used.
The ship motion, data density, and processing software are the factors investigated that affect the accuracy of bathymetric survey. The effect of …

In this contribution, we examine the effect of the promoter´s ionic charge and valence orbital energy on the catalytic activity of Fe-based catalysts, based on in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD), temperature-programmed-based techniques (TPR, TPD, CO-TP carburization), and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis catalytic testing studies. We compared the promoting effects of K (a known promoter for longer-chained products) with Ba, which has a similar ionic radius but has double the ionic charge. Despite being partially “buried” in a crystalline BaCO3 phase, the carburization of the Ba-promoted catalyst was more effective than that of K; this was primarily due to its …

Artificial Image Objects For Classification Of Breast Cancer Biomarkers With Transcriptome Sequencing Data And Convolutional Neural Network Algorithms, Xiangning Chen, Daniel G. Chen, Zhongming Zhao, Justin M. Balko, Jingchun Chen
School of Medicine Faculty Research
Background: Transcriptome sequencing has been broadly available in clinical studies. However, it remains a challenge to utilize these data effectively for clinical applications due to the high dimension of the data and the highly correlated expression between individual genes. Methods: We proposed a method to transform RNA sequencing data into artificial image objects (AIOs) and applied convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms to classify these AIOs. With the AIO technique, we considered each gene as a pixel in an image and its expression level as pixel intensity. Using the GSE96058 (n = 2976), GSE81538 (n = 405), and GSE163882 (n = …

Determination Of The Stress-Strain State Of Rock Mass And Zone Of Inelastic Deformation Around Underground Mine Excavation Using Modern Methods Of Numerical Modelling, Sergey A. Ignatiev, Aleksandr E. Sudarikov, Askar Zh. Imashev
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The paper reviews methods and trends of numerical modelling of geomechanical processes around underground mine excavations. The most rational method of determining the additional stresses caused by the mine excavations is chosen. Mathematical modelling was performed for excavations of various cross sections and different strength of rocks. The dimensions of the inelastic deformation zone around the mine excavations have been identified. The area of the total fracture zone around the excavation, as well as the area of the roof fracture zone are calculated. The results of the fracture zone modelling are presented both as coordinates and in a graphical form. …

Fourth-Order Nonlinear Distortion To The Power Spectrum Of Rf Amplifiers, Xianzhen Yang, Shiyu Li, Fu Li
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Even-order intermodulation distortions are often considered easy to filter in narrowband radio frequency (RF) wireless systems because they are usually located far away from the desired passband and adjacent bands. However, even-order intermodulation distortions have recently attracted more interest with the increasing popularity of wideband RF appli- cations. The authors’ previous work was devoted to establishing the power spectrum model of second-order intermodulation distortion. Motivated by the latest efforts on RF power amplifier linearization with second-order and fourth-order intermodulation, our focus now is to establish a power spectrum model of fourth-order intermodulation distortion which can be used to discuss the …

Equine farms are building both stables for the horses to live in and additional facilities to train and work horses (Kidd et al., 1997). For many of these farms, an outdoor arena that has an all-weather footing is the first working facility built. During inclement weather the ability to train in the outdoor arenas is inhibited, which in turn means the trainers, riders, and farms lose income as money is only made when horses are working, training, and competing. Indoor arenas allow for horses to continue to be worked no matter the weather conditions. The equine industry contributes a total …

Fully-Developed Fire Temperature In A Compartment With Varying Wood Fuel Loads, Keisuke Himoto, Masaki Noaki, Ken Matsuyama
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
Appropriate evaluation of fire behavior during the fully-developed phase is important for assessing the risk of building collapse and fire spread to adjacent buildings. In this study, a series of model experiments was conducted to investigate the fire behavior in compartments with varying wood fuel loads. Under small opening conditions, the increase in the wood fuel load had no notable effect on the heat release rate (HRR), but increased the fire duration and gas temperature. In certain cases, wood surface combustion continued even after flame ejection from the opening had ended, which maintained a high gas temperature for a long …

An open-ended hollow coaxial cable resonator probe configured to receive an aerosol sample for analysis. A metal post shorts the resonator's inner and outer conductors. A metal plate is spaced apart from an open end of the resonator by a dielectric layer that contains the received aerosol sample. Interrogator circuitry coupled to the resonator transmits an electromagnetic wave within the resonator and generates an electric field at the open end of the resonator. The interrogator circuitry is responsive to the generated electric field for determining a resonance frequency and an impedance of the resonator when the aerosol sample is present …
