Historically, Class F fly ash has been chosen as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in concrete for its ability to mitigate alkali-silica reaction (ASR). However, future availability of fly ash is uncertain because the energy industry has been investing in renewable energy production and removing coal burning generating stations from operation. Consequently, there is a growing need to find new, cost effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to fly ash. This study investigated a locally available natural pozzolan mined from a pumicite deposit near Espanola, NM for its ability to mediate ASR. Concrete and mortar mixtures included SCM contents ranging from …

Decarbonizing Rural Residential Buildings In Cold Climates: A Techno-Economic Analysis Of Heating Electrification, Filippo Padovani, Nelson Sommerfeldt, Francesca Longobardi, Joshua M. Pearce
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Given the need for decarbonization of the heating sector and the acute need of a propane replacement in the U.S. Upper Midwest, this study quantifies the techno-economic characteristics of sustainable heating electrification in isolated rural, residential buildings in cold climates without natural gas supply. Archetypal buildings are modeled under four levels of electrification. At each electrification level, a parametric solar photovoltaic (PV) sizing analysis is performed and the total life cycle cost, renewable fraction and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are calculated based on the primary energy supply for each building type. Cost optimal solutions are stress-tested with multi-dimensional sensitivity analyses. …
Impact Of Exposure On Thin Epoxy Overlay Performance, Abul Fazal Mazumder
Impact Of Exposure On Thin Epoxy Overlay Performance, Abul Fazal Mazumder
Dissertations
Thin epoxy overlays are used for improving the condition and extending the service life of bridge decks. The tensile bond pull-off strength, evaluated as per the ASTM C1583, is used as the performance indicator. A failure in the substrate with a tensile strength of 250 psi or greater is considered acceptable. However, the performance evaluated on in-service bridge decks shows inconsistent results. Laboratory studies by several researchers documented a distinct performance difference when the overlays are exposed to room temperatures in comparison to elevated temperatures. However, the most influential parameters such as concrete surface profile, thermal compatibility between overlay and …

Micro-Proppant Placement In Hydraulic And Natural Fracture Stimulation In Unconventional Reservoirs: A Review, Masoud Aslannezhad, Azim Kalantariasl, Zhenjiang You, Stefan Iglauer, Alireza Keshavarz
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Tight hydrocarbon reservoirs require stimulation to improve the recovery of oil and gas resources. Hydraulic fracturing is a technique extensively employed in the oil and gas industry to generate fractures including primary and secondary fractures. To keep these fractures open, proppants are used. However, some of these ractures are very narrow for conventional proppants to penetrate and prop, hence smaller proppants called micro-proppants are required. These micro-proppants can improve the hydraulic conductivity of both, the primary fractures and the untouched microfractures, leading to enhanced oil and gas recovery. This paper presents a critical review on the progress of current micro-proppants …

Influence Of Pressure, Temperature And Organic Surface Concentration On Hydrogen Wettability Of Caprock, Implications For Hydrogen Geo-Storage, Muhammad Ali, Nurudeen Yekeen, Nilanjan Pal, Alireza Keshavarz, Stefan Iglauer, Hussein Hoteit
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Hydrogen (H2) as a cleaner fuel has been suggested as a viable method of achieving the de-carbonization objectives and meeting increasing global energy demand. However, successful implementation of a full-scale hydrogen economy requires large-scale hydrogen storage (as hydrogen is highly compressible). A potential solution to this challenge is injecting hydrogen into geologic formations from where it can be withdrawn again at later stages for utilization purposes. The geo-storage capacity of a porous formation is a function of its wetting characteristics, which strongly influence residual saturations, fluid flow, rate of injection, rate of withdrawal, and containment security. However, literature …

Formulating Automated Responses To Cognitive Distortions For Cbt Interactions, Ignacio De Toledo, Giancarlo Salton, Robert J. Ross
Conference papers
One of the key ideas of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the ability to convert negative or distorted thoughts into more realistic alternatives. Although modern machine learning techniques can be successfully applied to a variety of Natural Language Processing tasks, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the lack of a publicly available dataset makes supervised training difficult for tasks such as reforming distorted thoughts. In this research, we constructed a small CBT dataset via crowd-sourcing, and leveraged state of the art pre-trained architectures to transform cognitive distortions, producing text that is relevant and more positive than the original negative thoughts. In particular, …

Safety is a simple concept but an abstract task, specifically with aircraft. One critical safety system, the Traffic Collision Avoidance System II (TCAS), protects against mid-air collisions by predicting the course of other aircraft, determining the possibility of collision, and issuing a resolution advisory for avoidance. Previous research to identify vulnerabilities associated with TCAS’s communication processes discovered that a false injection attack presents the most comprehensive risk to veritable trust in TCAS, allowing for a mid-air collision. This research explores the viability of successfully executing a false injection attack against a target aircraft, triggering a resolution advisory. Monetary constraints precluded …
