Nonlinear Optical Microscopy Assessment Of Tissue Structure And Chondrocyte Viability Of Articular Cartilage, Michael Le May 2022

Nonlinear Optical Microscopy Assessment Of Tissue Structure And Chondrocyte Viability Of Articular Cartilage, Michael Le

All Theses

Articular cartilage functions to protect the ends of bones by providing a surface that can withstand compressive forces and minimize friction during movement. Collagen fibers form the organizational backbone of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in cartilage. Proteoglycans within the ECM function to retain water and provide the tissue with the swelling pressure needed to withstand compressional forces. Chondrocytes, the only type of cell found in articular cartilage, produces these collagen fibers and proteoglycans to maintain the tissue structure and function. Significant injuries to articular cartilage can damage the chondrocytes and disrupt their ability to maintain homeostasis in the tissue. Therefore, …

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

During the acute phase of hemorrhage, heart rate and peripheral resistance increases to maintain proper oxygen delivery to vital organs. This response is mediated by the autonomic nervous system. Heart rate variability (HRV) has become a widely utilized measure to determine the autonomic nervous system control over the heart. Recently, pulse rate variability (PRV) has been suggested to serve as a surrogate for HRV. This study evaluates the ability of PRV obtained from peripheral arterial pressure waveforms as a method for detecting hemorrhage. Time domain and frequency domain metrics were evaluated for 5-minute and 15-minute arterial pressure waveform signals prior …

Simulation Of Li Dendrite Inhibition In Lithium Battery By Phase-Field Method, Yao Ren May 2022

Simulation Of Li Dendrite Inhibition In Lithium Battery By Phase-Field Method, Yao Ren

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Lithium (Li) dendrite growth poses serious challenges for the development of Li metal batteries which also stops the footsteps of human utilizing the environment-friendly new power source. Replacing liquid electrolyte with solid electrolyte can not only inhibit the dendrite growth by mechanical suppression, but also introduce more possibilities to the electrochemistry of battery. However, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood, and most theoretical works focus on pure liquid electrolyte, ignoring the mechanical strain effects. Here we developed a phase-field model which simulates the Li dendrite growth to study the competition between diffusion and deposition rates, the pure elastic …

Nonviral Approaches For Delivery Of Crispr-Cas9 Into Hepatocytes For Treatment Of Inherited Metabolic Disease, Tanner R. Rathbone

All Dissertations

Inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) of the liver have a collective occurrence of about 1 in 800 births. Current therapies for IMDs of the liver are limited, and the only curative option for patients is orthotopic liver transplantation. Due to shortages of organ donors, immunosuppression following the transplantation, and mortality risks associated with the procedure, alternative treatment options are necessary for curing IMDs of the liver. Therapeutic gene editing has been proposed as a potential strategy for treating IMDs of the liver. Adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) are the most widely used delivery method for liver-targeted gene therapies. Although widely used for …

Integrating Fire Responses To Combat Wildfires, Jonathan Leonard Badal May 2022

Integrating Fire Responses To Combat Wildfires, Jonathan Leonard Badal

Electrical Engineering

Each year wildfires cause significant loss of property, worsen people’s health, and destroy multiple ecosystems. On average, a wildfire season costs anywhere from 7.6-62.8 billion dollars due to fire containment, repair, and restoration [1]. It can take decades to recover from the crippling loss of land and take even longer to fully restore it. However, with the implementation of a robust early detection system, these losses can be significantly reduced. The current process for identifying wildfires involves visual identification, phone call alerts, and media tools primarily driven by park rangers and public reporting. Unfortunately, this system is not preventative and …

State Estimation—Beyond Gaussian Filtering, Haozhan Meng May 2022

State Estimation—Beyond Gaussian Filtering, Haozhan Meng

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers the state estimation problems with symmetric Gaussian/asymmetric skew-Gaussian assumption under linear/nonlinear systems. It consists of three parts. The first part proposes a new recursive finite-dimensional exact density filter based on the linear skew-Gaussian system. The second part adopts a skew-symmetric representation (SSR) of distribution for nonlinear skew-Gaussian estimation. The third part gives an optimized Gauss-Hermite quadrature (GHQ) rule for numerical integration with respect to Gaussian integrals and applies it to nonlinear Gaussian filters.

We first develop a linear system model driven by skew-Gaussian processes and present the exact filter for the posterior density with fixed dimensional recursive …

Strain-Based Design Of Steel-Polymer-Steel Composite Pipes, Vul Thang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Many offshore single-wall pipelines and structural failures have occurred in the past. As a result, lives were lost, and billions of dollars were spent. In addition, natural disasters such as earthquake fault zones can cause a large volume of soil movement. This can easily damage single-wall pipelines or piles of fixed offshore platforms in the earthquake fault zone.

Currently, the single-wall pipelines are used for the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry. This research investigated the use of double-wall composite pipe steel-polymer-steel (SPS) in place of single-wall pipe to prevent such failures. The double-wall composite pipe has a larger …

Analyzing The Surface Chemistry Of Ni-Fe Hydroxide Alloy Nanoparticles As Catalysts For The Oxygen Evolution Reaction By X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Analysis, Lauren B. Shepard

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Water electrolysis has been proposed as a renewable source of hydrogen, a possible replacement to harmful fossil fuels. This process can be broken down into two half reactions, the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction. Because the oxygen evolution reaction has slow kinetics and a high overpotential to overcome, a catalyst is needed to speed up the kinetics and ensure faster and more efficient production of molecular hydrogen. The use of Ni-Fe hydroxide alloy nanoparticles as a catalyst has been shown to significantly improve the efficiency of the reaction by decreasing the overpotential, making the process more energy …

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of An Array Of Graphene Based Variable Capacitors, Millicent Nkirote Gikunda

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since it was first isolated and characterized in 2004, graphene has shown the potential for a technological revolution. This is due to its amazing physical properties such as high electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity, and extreme flexibility. Freestanding graphene membranes naturally possesses an intrinsic rippled structure, and these ripples are in constant random motion even room temperatures. Occasionally, the ripples undergo spontaneous buckling (change of curvature from concave to convex and vice versa) and the potential energy associated with this is a double well potential. This movement of graphene is a potential source of vibrational energy.

In this dissertation, we …

Infrared Electric Field Enhancement Via A Hyperbolic-Metalens-Coupled Nanoantenna, Mohamed Jebril Kyamo May 2022

Infrared Electric Field Enhancement Via A Hyperbolic-Metalens-Coupled Nanoantenna, Mohamed Jebril Kyamo

Theses and Dissertations

The development of near- and mid-infrared applications requires high enhancement of the electric field intensity (EFI) and a high absorption cross-section of the electric field. The high enhancement of EFI can be obtained by concentrating optical energy to areas much smaller than the diffraction limit or by using surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Noble metals such as gold (Au) or silver (Ag) are not feasible for infrared (IR) applications because of high losses, lack of tunability, low resolution, and low-intensity enhancement. Our methods to solve these problems are based on appropriate metamaterial selection and on coupling systems with optimization of their …
