Minimally Invasive 3d Printed Microneedles For Glucose Monitoring, Eduardo Quintero, Justin Wong
Bioengineering Senior Theses
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provides an instantaneous real-time display of glucose level, rate of change of glucose, alerts, and alarms for actual or impending hypo- and hyperglycemia. Continuous glucose monitors are able to stay implanted on the patient anywhere from 7-14 days, giving patients and doctors valuable information to help improve patient care for diabetics, and providing them with a way to continuously monitor their blood glucose level concentration throughout the day.
Conventional methods of glucose detection such as blood glucose meters require the patient to gather frequent blood samples to generate instantaneous results that are only accurate as of …

Towards Targeted Delivery To Cns Neurons By Conquering The Bbb, David G.A. Bengford
Bioengineering Master's Theses
Brain cancer treatments have long been restricted by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Semi-permeable in the most selective way, this barrier may be crossed by one of three methods: membrane integrity disruption, passive transport, or active transport. The third option offers the opportunity for many medically relevant cargoes, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to be shuttled into the brain. The concept of a therapeutic “Trojan horse” builds on this capability by employing engineered nanovesicles—in this work, engineered exosomes—whose surfaces are studded with ligands functioning as the keys to crossing the BBB. Exosomes are a powerful methodology for this approach because …

Training Thinner And Deeper Neural Networks: Jumpstart Regularization, Carles Riera, Camilo Rey, Thiago Serra, Eloi Puertas, Oriol Pujol
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
Neural networks are more expressive when they have multiple layers. In turn, conventional training methods are only successful if the depth does not lead to numerical issues such as exploding or vanishing gradients, which occur less frequently when the layers are sufficiently wide. However, increasing width to attain greater depth entails the use of heavier computational resources and leads to overparameterized models. These subsequent issues have been partially addressed by model compression methods such as quantization and pruning, some of which relying on normalization-based regularization of the loss function to make the effect of most parameters negligible. In this work, …

Numerical Implementation And Validation Of A Viscoelastic-Plastic Material Model For Predicting Curing Induced Residual Stresses In Adhesive Bonded Joints, Akshat Agha, Fadi Abu-Farha
Publications
One of the main challenges in the joining of multi-material components is the assessment of the nature and magnitude of the residual stresses developing in the adhesive bond during the heat curing manufacturing process. Numerical modeling of these residual stresses can provide insights for making informed decisions related to (i) material substrate properties; (ii) adhesive properties i.e., low, medium, or high stiffness; (iii) bondline geometry i.e., bondline width and bead thickness; (iv) curing cycle characteristics; and (v) fixation design i.e., type, spacing, the number of joints. This work presents a cure history-dependent viscoelastic-plastic material description for the modeling of adhesive …

New Advances In Fluid–Structure Interaction, Wenli Chen, Zifeng Yang, Gang Hu, Haiquan Jing, Junlei Wang
New Advances In Fluid–Structure Interaction, Wenli Chen, Zifeng Yang, Gang Hu, Haiquan Jing, Junlei Wang
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Fluid–structure interactions (FSI) play a crucial role in the design, construction, service and maintenance of many engineering applications, e.g., aircraft, towers, pipes, offshore platforms and long-span bridges. The old Tacoma Narrows Bridge (1940) is probably one of the most infamous examples of serious accidents due to the action of FSI. Aircraft wings and wind-turbine blades can break because of FSI-induced oscillations. To alleviate or eliminate these unfavorable effects, FSI must be dealt with in ocean, coastal, offshore and marine engineering to design safe and sustainable engineering structures. In addition, the act of wind on plants and its resultant wind-induced motions …

Poly(Adr-Ribose) Polymerase 14-Specific Inhibitor For Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Clarissa Silvers, Colin Sim
Bioengineering Senior Theses
Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases, PARPs, are comprised of a family of 17 human enzymes that share a conserved catalytic domain that transfers ADP-ribose from nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to target proteins. While significant proteomic-based efforts in the field have uncovered a host of potential targets for each of the various active PARP enzymes, an outstanding question remains as to what extent proximal versus distal interactions with the protein substrates govern target selection. In this work, we describe the use of tandem mass spectrometry to identify specific residues that are auto-modified in both PARP14 and PARP15 as well as their preferred modification …

Elastic moduli such as Young's modulus (E), Poisson's ratio (v), and bulk modulus (K) are vital to creating geomechanical models for wellbore stability, hydraulic fracturing, sand production, etc. Due to the difficulty of obtaining core samples and performing rock testing, alternatively, wireline measurements can be used to estimate dynamic moduli. However, dynamic moduli are significantly different from elastic moduli due to many factors. In this paper, correlations for three zones (Nahr Umr shale, Zubair shale, and Zubair sandstone) located in southern Iraq were created to estimate static E, K, and ν from dynamic data. Core plugs from the aforementioned three …
