A Protocol For Coupling Volumetrically Dynamic In Vitro Experiments To Numerical Physiology Simulation For A Hybrid Cardiovascular Model, Abraham Umo, Ethan Kung Oct 2022

A Protocol For Coupling Volumetrically Dynamic In Vitro Experiments To Numerical Physiology Simulation For A Hybrid Cardiovascular Model, Abraham Umo, Ethan Kung

Publications

Objective: The Physiology Simulation Coupled Experiment (PSCOPE) is a hybrid modeling framework that enables a physical fluid experiment to operate in the context of a closed-loop computational simulation of cardiovascular physiology. Previous PSCOPE methods coupled rigid experiments to a lumped parameter network (LPN) of physiology but are incompatible with volumetrically dynamic experiments where fluid volume varies periodically. We address this limitation by introducing a method capable of coupling rigid, multi-branch, and volumetrically dynamic in-vitro experiments to an LPN. Methods: Our proposed method utilizes an iterative weighted-averaging algorithm to identify the unique solution waveforms for a given PSCOPE model. We confirm …

Vehicle light-weighting has allowed automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to improve fuel efficiency, incorporate value-adding features without a weight penalty, and extract better performance. The typical body-in-white (BiW) accounts for up to 40% of the total vehicle mass, making it the focus of light-weighting efforts through a) conceptual redesign b) design optimization using state-of-the-art computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools, and c) use of advanced high strength steels (AHSS), aluminum, magnesium, and/or fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites. However, most of these light-weighting efforts have been focused on luxury/sports vehicles, with a relatively high price range and an average production of 100,000 units/year or …

Interleaved Honeypot-Framing Model With Secure Mac Policies For Wireless Sensor Networks, Rajasoundaran Soundararajan, Maheswar Rajagopal, Akila Muthuramalingam, Eklas Hossain, Jaime Lloret

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Wireless Medium Access Control (WMAC) protocol functions by handling various data frames in order to forward them to neighbor sensor nodes. Under this circumstance, WMAC policies need secure data communication rules and intrusion detection procedures to safeguard the data from attackers. The existing secure Medium Access Control (MAC) policies provide expected and predictable practices against channel attackers. These security policies can be easily breached by any intelligent attacks or malicious actions. The proposed Wireless Interleaved Honeypot-Framing Model (WIHFM) newly implements distributed honeypot-based security mechanisms in each sensor node to act reactively against various attackers. The proposed WIHFM creates an …

A Novel Bayesian Framework Infers Driver Activation States And Reveals Pathway-Oriented Molecular Subtypes In Head And Neck Cancer, Zhengping Liu, Chunhui Cai, Xiaojun Ma, Jinling Liu, Lujia Chen, Vivian Wai Yan Lui, Gregory F. Cooper, Xinghua Lu

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) is an aggressive cancer resulting from heterogeneous causes. To reveal the underlying drivers and signaling mechanisms of different HNSCC tumors, we developed a novel Bayesian framework to identify drivers of individual tumors and infer the states of driver proteins in cellular signaling system in HNSCC tumors. First, we systematically identify causal relationships between somatic genome alterations (SGAs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for each TCGA HNSCC tumor using the tumor-specific causal inference (TCI) model. Then, we generalize the most statistically significant driver SGAs and their regulated DEGs in TCGA HNSCC cohort. Finally, we …

Versatile And Robust Non-Iterative Coupling Algorithm For Vehicle-Structure Interaction, Arya Datta Oct 2022

Versatile And Robust Non-Iterative Coupling Algorithm For Vehicle-Structure Interaction, Arya Datta

Theses and Dissertations

The dynamic analysis of the vehicle-structure interactions can be extremely computationally expensive. A general non-iterative coupling algorithm based on the substructure approach has been presented. It retains the advantage of the substructure approach that smaller subsystems are solved instead of a large system, which is usually solved when monolithic systems are solved. However, the advantage of using this general coupling approach is that it is non-iterative in nature, instead of the substructure approach that usually uses iterative procedure. The general coupling algorithm developed has been implemented to analyze dynamic interactions between the vehicle and the structure, both in two and …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background The increased popularity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has been linked to the abundance of flavoured products that are attractive to adolescents and young adults. In the last decade, e-cigarette designs have evolved through four generations that include modifications in battery power, e-cigarette liquid (e-liquid) reservoirs and atomiser units. E-liquids have likewise evolved in terms of solvent use/ratios, concentration and number of flavour chemicals, use of nicotine salts and acids, the recent increased use of synthetic cooling agents and the introduction of synthetic nicotine. Our current objective was to evaluate and compare the evolving composition of tobacco-flavoured e-liquids over the …

Since 2007, at the Electron Science Research Institute (ESRI) nano-fabrication laboratories, Edith Cowan University, Australia, we have devoted research efforts to the synthesis and characterization of bismuth-containing ferrite-garnet-type thin-film magneto-optic (MO) materials of different compositions. We report on the growth and characteristics of radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtered bismuth-substituted iron-garnet thin films. We study the process parameters associated with the RF magnetron sputter deposition technique and investigate the results of optimizing process parameters. To achieve the best MO properties, we employ a few unique techniques, such as co-sputtered nanocomposite films and all-garnet multilayer structures, as well as the application of …

Quality-Of-Service Provisioning For Smart City Applications Using Software-Defined Networking, Basima Kurungadan Oct 2022

Quality-Of-Service Provisioning For Smart City Applications Using Software-Defined Networking, Basima Kurungadan

Theses

In the current world, most cities have WiFi Access Points (AP) in every nook and corner. Hence upraising these cities to the status of a smart city is a more easily achievable task than before. Internet-of-Things (IoT) connections primarily use WiFi standards to form the veins of a smart city. Unfortunately, this vast potential of WiFi technology in the genesis of smart cities is somehow compromised due to its failure in meeting unique Quality-of-Service (QoS) demands of smart city applications. Out of the following QoS factors; transmission link bandwidth, packet transmission delay, jitter, and packet loss rate, not all applications …

Mitigating Progressive Collapse Resistance Of Reinforced Concrete Framed Structures With Innovative Reinforcing Scheme, Ahmad Zaki Abdelkarim Oct 2022

Mitigating Progressive Collapse Resistance Of Reinforced Concrete Framed Structures With Innovative Reinforcing Scheme, Ahmad Zaki Abdelkarim

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to numerically investigate the performance and efficiency of a novel proposed mitigating method to improve the resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) floor systems to progressive collapse as a result of a potential column failure. The proposed mitigating method applies to RC floor systems in framed structures, and it is based on a concept of developing self-generated “post-tensioning” axial compressive forces within segments of the floor beams that bridge over the potential failed column. To achieve this goal, the proposed method is comprised of adding diagonal top and bottom steel bars within the floor slab …

Hanford Low-Activity Waste Glass Composition-Temperature-Melt Viscosity Relationships, Alejandro Heredia-Langner, Vivianaluxa Gervasio, Scott K. Cooley, Charmayne E. Lonergan, Dong Sang Kim, Albert A. Kruger, John D. Vienna

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study developed a model for predicting viscosity of alkali-alumino-borosilicate glass melts as functions of composition and temperature. The model is based on a total of 3935 viscosity-temperature data from 574 glasses with viscosity values ranging from 2.53 to 7260 Poise (P) in the temperature range of 900–1260°C. Several different model forms were surveyed, including those based on Arrhenius, Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann, Avramov-Milchev, and Mauro-Yue-Ellison-Gupta-Allen. For each of these models, combinations of the temperature-independent parameters were fitted to composition. It was found that generally fitting more than one temperature-independent parameter as functions of composition resulted in overfitting. The Avramov-Milchev-based model was found …

Mechanical Behavior Of Single-Flawed Cylindrical Specimens Subjected To Axial Loading: A Numerical Investigation, Mostafa Asadizadeh, Saeed Khosravi, Javad Karimi, Taghi Sherizadeh, Sanaz Vajedian, Mohammad Farouq Hossaini

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Discontinuities are inherent components of rock masses and can range from fissures to large faults. Single fissures, the so-called flaws, may affect the mechanical behavior of rock mass, crack initiation, and propagation. In this paper, numerical investigations have been conducted on central-flawed cylindrical specimens subjected to axial loading to investigate the effect of flaw angle (α), length (2a), and aperture (A) on their mechanical behavior and crack development. Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) was adopted to investigate the cracking process of the cylindrical specimens and maximum principal stresses at flaw tips. The numerical models are calibrated and verified using extensive experimental …

Fusion Welding Of Refractory Metals And Zrb2-Sic-Zrc Ceramics, Jecee D. Jarman, William Fahrenholtz, Greg Hilmas, Jeremy Lee Watts, Tieshu Huang

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Molybdenum and a molybdenum alloy were fusion welded to ZrB2-based ceramics to determine if the electrical and thermal properties of the metals and ceramics affected their weldability. Commercial ceramic powders were hot pressed, machined into coupons, and preheated to 1600 °C before joining the ceramics to commercial metals using plasma arc welding. Weldability varied as indicated by the range of porosity observed within the fusion zones. Measured thermal and electrical properties appeared to have little to no effect on the weldability of metal-ceramic welds despite the large range of values measured across each property. Differences in melting temperatures between metal …

Stochastic Model For High Temperature Oxidation Of Cr–Ni Austenitic Steels Assisted By Spallation, Simon N. Lekakh, Oleg Neroslavsky, Mei Li, Larry Godlevski

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cr–Ni austenitic steels offer significant high temperature corrosion protection by forming a surface oxide layer. However, above critical service conditions (temperature, atmosphere, thermal cycling), oxidized surface can experience intensive degradation because of scale spallation, which could be detrimental to the in-service life. To predict the effect of scale spallation on oxidation kinetics, a simulation was implemented using a stochastic model. The model considers topological parameters and intensity of spallation which can occur, while delivering a true oxidation constant. The experimental procedure identified the amount of formed spalled scale and topology of spallation based on the use of element mapping of …

Enabling Ultrathick Electrodes Via A Microcasting Process For High Energy And Power Density Lithium-Ion Batteries, Tazdik Patwary Plateau, Hiep Pham, Yaqi Zhu, Ming-Chuan Leu, Jonghyun Park

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thickening electrodes is one effective approach to increase active material content for higher energy and low-cost lithium-ion batteries, but limits in charge transport and huge mechanical stress generation result in poor performance and eventual cell failure. This paper reports a new electrode fabrication process, referred to as µ-casting, enabling ultrathick electrodes that address the trade-off between specific capacity and areal/volumetric capacity. The proposed µ-casting is based on a patterned blade, enabling facile fabrication of 3D electrode structures. The study reveals the governing properties of µ-casted ultrathick electrodes and how this simultaneously improves battery energy/power performance. The process facilitates a short …

A Simple Optical Fiber Spr Sensor With Ultra-High Sensitivity For Dual-Parameter Measurement, Farhan Mumtaz, Muhammad Roman, Bohong Zhang, Lashari Ghulam Abbas, Muhammad Aqueel Ashraf, Muhammad Arshad Fiaz, Yutang Dai, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work reports a simple optical fiber Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor with ultra-high sensitivity for simultaneous measurement of the dual-parameter. The sensor is based on a D-shaped fiber with a nanolayer coating of Silver (Ag) and Hematite (α-Fe2O3). The Ag/α-Fe2O3 layer is deposited on the longitudinal surface of residual cladding, and a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is inscribed on the single-mode fiber (SMF) for temperature compensation. The α-Fe2O3 layer protects the Ag layer from oxidation and effectively enhances the surface plasmon wave while interacting with free electrons. Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling is employed to investigate the refractive index …

Planar Compliance Realization With Two 3-Joint Serial Mechanisms, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels Oct 2022

Planar Compliance Realization With Two 3-Joint Serial Mechanisms, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, the realization of any specified planar compliance with two 3R serial elastic mechanisms is addressed. Using the concept of dual elastic mechanisms, it is shown that the realization of a compliant behavior with two serial mechanisms connected in parallel is equivalent to its realization with a 6-spring fully parallel mechanism. Since the spring axes of a 6-spring parallel mechanism indicate the geometry of a dual 3R serial mechanism, a new synthesis procedure for the realization of a stiffness matrix with a 6-spring parallel mechanism is first developed. Then, this result is extended to a geometric construction-based synthesis …

Percutaneous-Reinforced Osteoplasty: A Review Of Emerging Treatment Strategies For Bone Interventions, Nischal Koirala, Jyotsna Joshi, Stephen F. Duffy, Gordon Mclennan

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Percutaneous-reinforced osteoplasty is currently being investigated as a possible therapeutic procedure for fracture stabilization in high-risk patients, primarily in patients with bone metastases or osteoporosis. For these patients, a percutaneous approach, if structurally sound, can provide a viable method for treating bone fractures without the physiologic stress of anesthesia and open surgery. However, the low strength of fixation is a common limitation that requires further refinement in scaffold design and selection of materials, and may potentially benefit from tissue-engineering-based regenerative approaches. Scaffolds that have tissue regenerative properties and low inflammatory response promote rapid healing at the fracture site and are …

Characterizing And Modeling The Coupled Hydro-Mechanical Cyclic Behavior Of Unsaturated Soils Using Constant Water Content Oedometer And Direct Shear Tests, Beshoy Riad, Xiong Zhang Oct 2022

Characterizing And Modeling The Coupled Hydro-Mechanical Cyclic Behavior Of Unsaturated Soils Using Constant Water Content Oedometer And Direct Shear Tests, Beshoy Riad, Xiong Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most transportation infrastructures are constructed on compacted soils that are typically unsaturated above the groundwater table. The soils are subjected to cyclic traffic loadings and seasonal wetting–drying cycles. Although problems associated with unsaturated soils are ubiquitous in the US, coupled hydro-mechanical analysis is rarely included in the design/analysis of transportation geosystems. This can be attributed to two main reasons: (a) there are no simple devices/methods which can be used to rapidly characterize stress–strain behavior for unsaturated soils, and (b) there is a lack of a constitutive model to study coupled hydro-mechanical cyclic behavior for unsaturated soils in a consistent way. …

Benefits And Drawbacks Of Using Multiple Shrinkage Mitigating Strategies On Performance Of Fiber-Reinforced Mortar, Kamran Aghaee, Kamal Khayat

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shrinkage mitigating strategies have been successfully used to prevent concrete cracking. Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficiency of shrinkage mitigating materials (SMM), such as expansive agent (EA), shrinkage reducing admixture (SRA), and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) on reducing shrinkage and cracking; however, few studies have addressed the limitations of using these materials. In addition, the mechanism of negative effect on microstructure and mechanical properties when these materials are used at high contents or in combinations is not well defined. This study investigates the effect of CaO-based EA, SRA, and SAP on compressive strength development, fiber pull-out strength, and shrinkage of fiber-reinforced …
