Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dye aggregates and their excitonic properties are of interest for their applications to organic photovoltaics, non-linear optics, and quantum information systems. DNA scaffolding has been shown to be effective at promoting the aggregation of dyes in a controllable manner. Specifically, isolated DNA Holliday junctions have been used to achieve strongly coupled cyanine dye dimers. However, the structural properties of the dimers and the DNA, as well as the role of Holliday junction isomerization are not fully understood. To study the dynamics of cyanine dimers in DNA, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out for adjacent and transverse dimers attached to Holliday …

Biomaterials With Diverse Physical & Chemical Signals For Tissue Engineering Applications, Mohammed Mehdi Benmassaoud Oct 2022

Biomaterials With Diverse Physical & Chemical Signals For Tissue Engineering Applications, Mohammed Mehdi Benmassaoud

Theses and Dissertations

Cells within natural tissues are exposed to a myriad of biochemical and biophysical cues, and it is challenging to recapitulate these signals in vitro. The goal of this dissertation is to create materials with distinct biophysical and biochemical signals as platforms that induce controllable yet diverse cellular responses. To evaluate the effects of heterogeneous biophysical cues on cell behavior, cells were encapsulated in porous scaffold-hydrogel composites, and it was found that cellular metrics (morphology, matrix mechanosensing) varied within soft (hydrogel) and rigid (scaffold) composite regions. To create soft materials with spatially defined biochemical signals, hydrogels that can be subsequently photopatterned …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Current literature on the predictive correlation between a student’s perceived course value and their end-of-course results utilizing the Course Valuing Inventory (Nehari & Bender, 1978) has not been studied in aeronautics education. While research investigating various attributes of academic success exists, quantitative studies specifically addressing predictive variables of course success related to end-of-course grades in aeronautics education do not exist. Given the results of quantitative data, aeronautics academia can strategically implement specific variables into course planning and designing to create academic content that appeals to aeronautic students. The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to examine the predictive …

Carbonate-Superstructured Solid Fuel Cells With Hydrocarbon Fuels, Hanrui Su, Wei Zhang, Yun Hang Hu

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

A basic requirement for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is the sintering of electrolyte into a dense impermeable membrane to prevent the mixing of fuel and oxygen for a sufficiently high open-circuit voltage (OCV). However, herein, we demonstrate a different type of fuel cell, a carbonate-superstructured solid fuel cell (CSSFC), in which in situ generation of superstructured carbonate in the porous samarium-doped ceria layer creates a unique electrolyte with ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 0.17 S.cm21 at 550 °C. The CSSFC achieves unprecedented high OCVs (1.051 V at 500 °C and 1.041 V at 550 °C) with methane fuel. Furthermore, the …

Loss Analysis Of Conventional And Three Level Boost Dc-Dc Converters Employed For Mppt In Pv Systems. The Research Article Analyzes The Losses Incurred In Three Level Boost Converter And Conventional Boost Converter Employed For Pv Applications., Raghavendra Rao P Dr

Technical Collection

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are often exposed to nonuniform insolation due to shading. Under these conditions, there exists multiple peaks in their power-voltage (P-V) characteristics and among which there is one global maximum power point (GMPP). Several GMPP tracking methods employed in the literature have focused mainly on the tracking efficiency. But the PV system output must include the DC-DC converter losses also, to get the actual estimate of the power extracted. Hence, this article attempts to analyse the losses incurred in the DCDC converters namely conventional boost converter (CBC) and three-level boost converter (TLBC) connected to a PV array. It …

Cratons are generally defined as stable continental blocks with a strong cratonic root that typically is at least ∼200 km thick. Many cratons have undergone little internal tectonism and destruction since their formation, but some of them, such as the eastern part of the North China Craton (NCC), the Dharwar Craton and the Wyoming Craton, have lost their thick cratonic root and become reactivated in recent geological history, leading to widespread Meso-Cenozoic volcanisms. The mechanisms responsible for such decratonization remain debated. To provide new constraints on models leading to decratonization, in this study we stack 612 854 source-normalized P-to-S conversions …

Impulse Measurement Methods For Pulsed Laser Ablation Propulsion, Ishaan Mishra, Scott Kirkpatrick

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications

Pulsed laser ablation propulsion has the potential to revolutionize space exploration by eliminating the requirement of a spacecraft to carry its propellant and power source as the high-power laser is situated off-board. More experimentation needs to be done to optimize this propulsion system and understand the mechanisms of thrust generation. There are many methods used to calculate the impulse imparted in pulsed laser ablation experiments. In this paper, key performance parameters are derived for some of the impulse measurement methods used in ablation propulsion experiments. Regimes discussed include the torsional pendulum system, simple pendulum system, and solid and liquid microspheres.

Atomic And Molecular Layer Deposition As Surface Engineering Techniques For Emerging Alkali Metal Rechargeable Batteries, Matthew Sullivan, Peng Tang, Xiangbo Meng

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Alkali metals (lithium, sodium, and potassium) are promising as anodes in emerging rechargeable batteries, ascribed to their high capacity or abundance. Two commonly experienced issues, however, have hindered them from commercialization: the dendritic growth of alkali metals during plating and the formation of solid electrolyte interphase due to contact with liquid electrolytes. Many technical strategies have been developed for addressing these two issues in the past decades. Among them, atomic and molecular layer deposition (ALD and MLD) have been drawing more and more efforts, owing to a series of their unique capabilities. ALD and MLD enable a variety of inorganic, …

Computational fluid dynamics modeling was used to characterize the effect of the integration of constrictions defined by the vertices of hyperbolas on the flow structure in microfluidic serpentine channels. In the new topology, the Dean flows characteristic of the pressure-driven fluid motion along curved channels are combined with elongational flows and asymmetric longitudinal eddies that develop in the constriction region. The resulting complex flow structure is characterized by folding and stretching of the fluid volumes, which can promote enhanced mixing. Optimization of the geometrical parameters defining the constriction region allows for the development of an efficient micromixer topology that shows …
