Every day, new reports of cyberattacks on interconnected control systems emerge. The vulnerability of their communication mechanism makes similar control systems a target for malicious outsiders. Protecting sensitive data and maintaining network reliability and availability are two of the main reasons why network security is so important. Strong and dependable network security strategies use a number of safeguards to protect users and businesses from malware and cyber assaults like distributed denial of service. A safety analysis is an essential step that must precede the introduction of any security measures. There hasn't been much experience with cyberattacks on power control systems …

Social practice theory offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the relationship between infrastructure and wellbeing. One prominent model in practice theory frames systems of provision as the rules, resources, and structures that enable the organization of social practices, encompassing both material and immaterial aspects of infrastructures. A second well-known model frames social practices in terms of their constituent elements: meanings, materials, and competences. Reconciling these two models, we argue that household capacity to respond to shifting systems of provision to maintain wellbeing is profoundly tied to the dynamics of privilege and inequity. To examine these dynamics, we propose a new analytical …

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications
In resource-limited settings, conventional sanitation systems often fail to meet their goals─with system failures stemming from a mismatch among community needs, constraints, and deployed technologies. Although decision-making tools exist to help assess the appropriateness of conventional sanitation systems in a specific context, there is a lack of a holistic decision-making framework to guide sanitation research, development, and deployment (RD&D) of technologies. In this study, we introduce DMsan─an open-source multi-criteria decision analysis Python package that enables users to transparently compare sanitation and resource recovery alternatives and characterize the opportunity space for early-stage technologies. Informed by the methodological choices frequently used in …

Scale-Up Of Perovskite Oxides For Conversion Of Co2 To Co Through Reverse Water-Gas Shift Chemical Looping, Hanzhong Shi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
CO2 conversion to CO has the benefit of further conversion to hydrocarbon-based fuels and chemicals. Due to CO2 being an important greenhouse gas, its conversion to CO and an increase of the carbon cycling will help reduce the greenhouse effect. Reverse water-gas shift chemical looping (RWSG-CL) is a two-step process that can be employed for the conversion of CO2 to CO. The first step involves partial reduction of oxygen by hydrogen to form oxygen vacant oxide, and the second step is the conversion of CO2 to CO over these partially reduced materials to regain their original structures. The RWSG-CL process …

Hadhramout University Journal of Natural & Applied Sciences
Pinch analysis approach of the heat exchanger network in the hydrocracking unit was carried out to save the energy consumption and reduce the gas emissions simultaneously. This method based on mathematical model of the hydrocracking unit for a heat exchanger network using LINGO program to achieve the minimization of environmental impacts and the reduction of energy cost. The presented energy demands for the heat exchanger network are 20.38 MMBtu/hr and 26.52 MMBtu/hr for heating and cooling loads, respectively. The current analysis shows a huge opportunity in order to decrease energy consumption of the hydrocracking process at a minimum temperature difference …

Accurate Indoor Navigation System Based On Imu/Lp-Mm Integrated Method Using Kalman Filter Algorithm, Abdullah Mohammed Bahasan
Hadhramout University Journal of Natural & Applied Sciences
Abstract
The demand for navigation systems is rapidly increasing, especially in indoor environments which the signal of GPS is not available. Therefore the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) system is a suitable navigation system in such indoor environments. It usually consists of three accelerometers and three gyroscopes to determine position, velocity and attitude information, respectively, without need of any external source. But this type of navigation systems has errors growth with time due to accelerometers and gyroscopes drifts. This paper introduces indoor navigation system based on integrated IMU navigation system with proposed system called Landmarks Points-Map Matching (LP-MM) system using Kalman …
Measuring Energy Deposition From A Laser Induced Plasma In Air Which Generates Broadband Microwave Radiation, Anna M. Janicek
Measuring Energy Deposition From A Laser Induced Plasma In Air Which Generates Broadband Microwave Radiation, Anna M. Janicek
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The absorbed energy from a short pulse laser produced plasma is proportional to the magnitude of the acoustic wave the plasma launches; however, methods to resolve absolute energy from the acoustic signal are still being developed. This is the first report of quantitatively estimating the energy deposited by a femtosecond laser-induced plasma using a shock wave approximation from acoustic measurements. To further understand energy deposition mechanisms, two diagnostics, a single microphone which measures the acoustic signal propagation and an array of microphones which measure the changing acoustic signal longitudinally along the plasma were developed and implemented to measure the energy …

Pvpbc: Privacy- And Verifiability-Preserving E-Voting Based On Permissioned Blockchain, Muntadher Sallal, Ruairí De Fréin, Ali Malik
Articles
Privacy and verifiability are crucial security requirements in e-voting systems and combining them is considered to be a challenge given that they seem to be contradictory. On one hand, privacy means that cast votes cannot be traced to the corresponding voters. On the other hand, linkability of voters and their votes is a requirement of verifiability which has the consequence that a voter is able to check their vote in the election result. These two contradictory features can be addressed by adopting privacy-preserving cryptographic primitives, which at the same time as achieving privacy, achieve verifiability. Many end-to-end schemes that support …

Introduction: Large-area skin traumas, such as thermal burns, are among the most severe health issues that decrease patients’ quality of life and burden healthcare systems. The CDC estimates that there are 1.1 million burns requiring medical attention each year, with more than 20,000 cases involving at least 25% of the body surface, resulting in 4,500 deaths. In addition, about 10,000 people die from burn-related infections. A promising solution to alleviate this problem is using wound dressings based on biopolymers with inherent wound healing properties and biodegradability. One of these biopolymers is chitosan, which is derived from arthropod shells and exhibits …

The Effects Of Demographics And Risk Factors On The Morphological Characteristics Of Human Femoropopliteal Arteries, Sayed Ahmadreza Razian, Majid Jadidi, Alexey Kamenskiy
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Background: Disease of the lower extremity arteries (Peripheral Arterial Disease, PAD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. During disease development, the arteries adapt by changing their diameter, wall thickness, and residual deformations, but the effects of demographics and risk factors on this process are not clear.
Methods: Superficial femoral arteries from 736 subjects (505 male, 231 female, 12 to 99 years old, average age 51±17.8 years) and the associated demographic and risk factor variables were used to construct machine learning (ML) regression models that predicted morphological characteristics (diameter, wall thickness, and longitudinal opening angle resulting from the …

Time Evolution Is A Source Of Bias In The Wolf Algorithm For Largest Lyapunov Exponents, Kolby Brink, Tyler Wiles, Nicholas Stergiou, Aaron Likens
Time Evolution Is A Source Of Bias In The Wolf Algorithm For Largest Lyapunov Exponents, Kolby Brink, Tyler Wiles, Nicholas Stergiou, Aaron Likens
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Human movement is inherently variable by nature. One of the most common analytical tools for assessing movement variability is the largest Lyapunov exponent (LyE) which quantifies the rate of trajectory divergence or convergence in an n-dimensional state space. One popular method for assessing LyE is the Wolf algorithm. Many studies have investigated how Wolf’s calculation of the LyE changes due to sampling frequency, filtering, data normalization, and stride normalization. However, a surprisingly understudied parameter needed for LyE computation is evolution time. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the LyE changes as a function of evolution time …

Deep Reinforcement Learning For Articulatory Synthesis In A Vowel-To-Vowel Imitation Task, Denis Shitov, Elena Pirogova, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Margaret Lech
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Articulatory synthesis is one of the approaches used for modeling human speech production. In this study, we propose a model-based algorithm for learning the policy to control the vocal tract of the articulatory synthesizer in a vowel-to-vowel imitation task. Our method does not require external training data, since the policy is learned through interactions with the vocal tract model. To improve the sample efficiency of the learning, we trained the model of speech production dynamics simultaneously with the policy. The policy was trained in a supervised way using predictions of the model of speech production dynamics. To stabilize the training, …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Graphene twistronics using multilayer graphene is presented in such a way that it provides a metamaterial effect. This manuscript also analyzes the prediction of behavior using machine learning. The metamaterial effect is achieved by twisting the graphene layers. Graphene twistronics is a new concept for changing the electrical and optical properties of bilayer graphene by applying a small angle twist between the layers. The angle twists of 5o, 10o, and 15o are analyzed for the proposed graphene twistronics design. Tuning in the absorption spectrum is achieved by applying small twists to the angles of the …

Due to the depletion of natural aggregates and raw materials for contemporary construction, the construction and demolition waste existing in old concrete structures is an imperative problem. Cutting down on exploiting natural aggregates and reusing construction and demolition waste in the concrete industry are solutions to this problem. This paper investigated the replacement of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) with recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) with different ratios (0%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) in producing self-compacting concrete (SCC). Different components of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as nano-silica (NS), fly ash (FA), and metakaolin (MK), as well as PVA fibers, were incorporated …
Realization Of Multi-Valued Logic Using Optical Quantum Computing, Sophie Choe
Realization Of Multi-Valued Logic Using Optical Quantum Computing, Sophie Choe
Dissertations and Theses
Quantum computing is a paradigm of computing using physical systems, which operate according to quantum mechanical principles. Since 2017, functioning quantum processing units with limited capabilities are available on the cloud. There are two models of quantum computing in the literature: discrete variable and continuous variable models. The discrete variable model is an extension of the binary logic of digital computing with quantum bits |0⟩ and |1⟩ . In the continuous variable model, the quantum state space is infinite-dimensional and the quantum state is expressed with an infinite number of basis elements.
In the physical implementation of quantum computing, however, …

SMU Data Science Review
Today, there is an increased risk to data privacy and information security due to cyberattacks that compromise data reliability and accessibility. New machine learning models are needed to detect and prevent these cyberattacks. One application of these models is cybersecurity threat detection and prevention systems that can create a baseline of a network's traffic patterns to detect anomalies without needing pre-labeled data; thus, enabling the identification of abnormal network events as threats. This research explored algorithms that can help automate anomaly detection on an enterprise network using Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity data. This study demonstrates that Neural Networks with Bayesian …

Entropy stabilized oxides (ESOs) are a new class of stable hybrids and single phase metal oxides made from multiple ions with material properties somewhere between the constituent oxides, or occasionally entirely new properties. One of the limitations of ESOs is their energy-intensive fabrication process, which has resulted in slow development and scale-up of new ESOs. In this work, we present a novel energy-efficient ESO synthesis method that uses the ability of carbonaceous materials to heat rapidly in response to radio frequency (RF) fields in 1–200 MHz range. Using carbon fibers and graphene as RF susceptors, synthesis of (Mg0·2Co0·2Ni0·2Cu0·2Zn0.2)O is achieved …

Magnetic Nanocomposites For The Remote Activation Of Sulfate Radicals For The Removal Of Rhodamine B, Pranto Paul, Marissa Nicholson, J. Zach Hilt
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The widespread presence of numerous organic contaminants in water poses a threat to the ecological environment and human health. Magnetic nanocomposites exposed to an alternating magnetic field (AMF) have a unique ability for magnetically mediated energy delivery (MagMED) resulting from the embedded magnetic nanoparticles; this localized energy delivery and associated chemical and thermal effects are a potential method for removing contaminants from water. This work developed a novel magnetic nanocomposite—a polyacrylamide-based hydrogel loaded with iron oxide nanoparticles. For this magnetic nanocomposite, persulfate activation and the contamination removal in water were investigated. Magnetic nanocomposites were exposed to AMF with a model …

Heterogeneous Sensor Data Fusion For Multiscale, Shape Agnostic Flaw Detection In Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing, Benjamin Bevans, Christopher Barrett, Thomas Spears, Aniruddha Gaikwad, Alex Riensche, Harold (Scott) Halliday, Prahalada Rao
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We developed and applied a novel approach for shape agnostic detection of multiscale flaws in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing using heterogenous in-situ sensor data. Flaws in LPBF range from porosity at the micro-scale (< 100 μm), layer related inconsistencies at the meso-scale (100 μm to 1 mm) and geometry-related flaws at the macroscale (> 1 mm). Existing data-driven models are primarily focused on detecting a specific type of LPBF flaw using signals from one type of sensor. Such approaches, which are trained on data from simple cuboid and cylindrical-shaped coupons, have met limited success when used for detecting multiscale flaws in complex LPBF parts. The objective of this work is to develop a heterogenous sensor data fusion …

Analytical Method For Predicting Lateral Facing Deflection Of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Abutment Walls, Thang Pham, S. Mustapha Rahmaninezhad, Andres Palma, Truc Phan, Thuy Vu
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) walls have been recently used as bridge abutments to directly support spread footings on the reinforced soil mass. This application reduces the requirement for using traditional deep foundations, such as piles or drilled shafts, to support bridge beams. GRS abutment walls are generally subjected to high footing loads that are close to the wall facing. Although GRS abutment walls with modular block facing have been the subject of a number of studies, there are limited methods to predict the profile of the lateral facing deflections along the height of the GRS abutment walls. Lateral deflections along the …

Trends in the construction domain, educational enrollment, student graduation, student industry employment, and workforce retention demonstrate that minorities—Hispanics, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans—are often excluded, segregated, or ignored in this domain. A systematic literature review (N = 68) was conducted to investigate the causes and effects of racial disparities produced by systemic racism in the educational and workforce domains of construction. Particularly, this paper focuses on exploring how racial disparities in construction impact minorities, the current state of the racial divide, the practices that perpetuate racial inequities, and the strategies currently used to prevent, in a sustainable manner, …

Probability Of Detection In Structural Health Monitoring, Genda Chen
INSPIRE Archived Webinars
The fundamental concept of the probability of detection in structural health monitoring is introduced. The traditional Probability of Detection (POD) method as described in the Department of Defense Handbook MIL-HDBK-1823A for nondestructive evaluation systems does not take the time dependency of data collection into account. When applied to in-situ sensors for the measurement of flaw sizes, such as fatigue-induced crack length and corrosion-induced mass loss, the validity and reliability of the traditional method is unknown. In this 50-minute lecture, the POD for in-situ sensors and their associated reliability assessment for detectable flaw sizes are evaluated using a Flaw-Size-at-Detection (FSaD) method …

Abstract: A predictive depth deterministic policy gradient (PDDPG) algorithm is proposed by combining the least squares method with deep deterministic policy gradient(DDPG) for the problems of strong randomness, poor real-time performance, and slow planning speed by obstacle avoidance on aircraft carrier deck. The short-term trajectory of dynamic obstacles on the deck is predicted by the least square method. DDPG is used to provide agents with the ability to learn and make decisions in continuous space by the short-term trajectory of dynamic obstacles. Abstract: Facing with the problem that the floor evacuation simulation only annotates the floor plan route, which is relatively single and not intuitive, a 3D building evacuation simulation method integrating mixed reality and building information model is proposed. The BIM components are reasonably planned and segmented, and reasonable annotation is performed. The BIM information is routed through the surface area heuristic optimization algorithm based on the bounding volume hierarchy. The evacuation simulation process is imported into the Microsoft Hololens2 hardware platform using the Unity3D development engine. The experimental results show that, compared with the previous evacuation simulation expressed only …

Abstract: Three K-means clustering algorithms are proposed to prevent chaos in the formation of a multi-agent system (MAS) with multiple leaders. The algorithm divides the cluster into communities with the same number of leaders, and the agents within the community will follow the same leader. Among the three proposed algorithms, algorithm #1 is suitable for scenarios with widely distributed agents wherein rapid consensus can be achieved in the shortest time; algorithm #2 is suitable for scenarios with a sparse agent distribution and effectively prevented agent collisions; and algorithm #3 exhibits rapid convergence and considerably reduces the MAS control cost, …

Abstract: Aiming at the problems of color overflow in pattern sketch colorization and lack of fabric texture features in style transfer, this paper proposes a method of costume pattern sketch colorization and style transfer based on neural network. This paper initializes the data set, collects the costume pattern image, extracts the costume pattern sketch, synthesizes the costume pattern sketch with color features and constructs the style data set. The research builds the conditional generative adversarial nets and achieves the costume pattern sketch with color features colorization based on the generator. The study constructs a convolutional neural network model, uses the …
