This thesis presents a predictive analysis of the stability of square bistable carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates under various loading conditions. The stability of these laminates is essential to their performance and longevity and is influenced by factors such as thickness and length. Analytical and numerical techniques are used to model the behavior of these laminates, and experimental tests are conducted to validate the models. The secondary goals were to determine the most prevalent barriers and compare the difference in knowledge about the FE between senior and sophomore students. The FE exam is a computer-based exam with questions based on undergraduate-level courses and is an early step in the process of becoming a professional engineer. Currently medical diagnostic methods suffer from the need for skilled labor, bulky, sophisticated and expensive equipment, ideal lab environments and ample time. A point-of-care biosensor can alleviate these problems and allow for more mobile disease detection. To meet this need, researchers have looked to DNA strand displacement networks to perform molecular level computation through a series of DNA strand displacement reactions in which disease associated biomarker inputs can trigger a cascaded signal to produce a readable output downstream in a matter of minutes. In this dissertation, silicon-based materials for photovoltaics and chalcopyrite-based materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting are investigated using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Although silicon dominates the photovoltaic market, further improvement can be made by using an alternative low temperature passivation approach. Currently, thermally grown SiO2 passivation is commonly used for silicon solar cells. However, this technique requires high processing temperatures (>800 °C), which increases the thermal budget, potentially decreases the bulk quality of Si, and can lead to difficulties in implementing in production lines. Here, a S-based passivation approach is studied that require lower processing temperatures of ~550 °C. …

The relationship between reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS-RNS) secretion and the concomitant biocorrosion of degradable magnesium (Mg) materials is poorly understood. We found that Mg foils implanted short term in vivo (24 h) displayed large amounts of proinflammatory F4/80+/iNOS + macrophages at the interface. We sought to investigate the interplay between biodegrading Mg materials (98.6% Mg, AZ31 & AZ61) and macrophages (RAW 264.7) stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (RAW 264.7LPS) to induce ROS-RNS secretion. Perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology offers a promising alternative to silicon-based photovoltaics (PVs), but challenges of stability, module efficiency, and scalability hinder commercialization. This study aims to explore potential solutions to overcome scalability and cost limitations of PSCs, addressing technical barriers to commercialization. We adapt the conventional three-stage perovskite deposition process (deposition, translational phase formation, and annealing) for scalable platforms using wide-area depositions, meniscus coating methods, forced laminar airflow drying, and radiative annealing methods, making it more suitable for roll-to-roll fabrication. The disposal of waste rubber, particularly tire rubber, continues to pose a challenge in the 21st century. As a result, most end-of-life tires (ELTs) are either dumped in landfills or burned as tire-derived fuel. Chloramine devulcanization may offer a viable solution to this problem. Chloramine devulcanization is a low-temperature, low-pressure, process that selectively breaks sulfur crosslinks while preserving the polymer backbone. Chloramine devulcanization enables the recovery of chloramine recovered carbon black (CrCB) and devulcanized rubber (CdR) as separate products.
