Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Increased waste production and poor waste management have created severe negative environmental impacts. Waste incineration is a way to produce energy and decreases environmental impacts; however, this technique cannot be considered independently as a source of power generation because of its low performance. This study aims to evaluate the integration of a waste incineration system with a natural gas-fired power plant in terms of energy, exergy, and economic points. As a result of the proposed configurations, in addition to promoting efficiency and net power production, some equipment is removed from power plants. Efforts are made to increase the accuracy of …

In order to obtain evidence of a crime timely, most authorities encourage whistleblowers to provide valuable reports by rewarding them with prizes. However, criminals will try their best to delete or tamper with the reports and even threaten and revenge the whistleblowers to escape punishment. Hence, to make the reporting system work, it is essential to ensure the integrity of reported messages and the anonymity of the reporting and rewarding procedures in the reporting system. Most existing schemes for this problem are generally based on ring signatures, which incur high computational overhead and imperfect anonymity. In this paper, we introduce …

Symmetric Searchable Encryption (SSE), as an ideal primitive, can ensure data privacy while supporting retrieval over encrypted data. However, existing multi-user SSE schemes require the data owner to share the secret key with all query users or always be online to generate search tokens. While there are some solutions to this problem, they have at least one weakness, such as non-supporting conjunctive query, result decryption assistance of the data owner, and unauthorized access. To solve the above issues, we propose an Owner-free Distributed Symmetric searchable encryption supporting Conjunctive query (ODiSC). Specifically, we first evaluate the Learning-Parity-with-Noise weak Pseudorandom Function (LPN-wPRF) …

Storage of the thermal energy of solar intensity has a significant effect on the efficiency of desalination systems at nighttime, when solar intensity is not available. Solar energy provides the potential to facilitate the freshwater needs of small communities, where access to potable water is commonly limited. However, freshwater generation formation via solar stills remains low when compared to other desalination methods. Hence, multiple innovative materials for efficient water production by solar stills have been invetsigated in the literature, where this is addressed on a wide scale in this comprehensive review. This includes a focus on innovative materials including nanomaterials, …

Investigating Ph And Other Electrical Properties Of Potassium Salt Solutions, Li Shu, Xi Lu, Veeriah Jegatheesan, Leonardo Jegatheesan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A recent study of ours reported that pH of common salts varies with concentration at room temperature. It can either increase in case of basic salts or decrease in case of acidic salts. In this study, pH values of four kind of potassium salts were investigated and their pH values increased with salt concentrations. It was reasoned that the concentration of hydrogen ions equalled the concentration of positive charges/protons in a solution, so a relationship between the activity of hydrogen ions and charge activity was developed. Further, the well-established equations for pH with hydrogen-ion activity and electrostatic/cell potential were extended …

Disconnections due to voltage drops in the grid cannot be permitted if wind turbines (WTs) contribute significantly to electricity production, as this increases the risk of production loss and destabilizes the grid. To mitigate the negative effects of these occurrences, WTs must be able to ride through the low-voltage conditions and inject reactive current to provide dynamic voltage support. This paper investigates the low-voltage ride-Through (LVRT) capability enhancement of a Type-3 WT utilizing a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). During the grid voltage drop, the DVR quickly injects a compensating voltage to keep the stator voltage constant. This paper proposes an …

Optimal Allocation Of Battery Energy Storage Systems To Enhance System Performance And Reliability In Unbalanced Distribution Networks, Dong Zhang, G. M. Shafiullah, Choton K. Das, Kok W. Wong
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The continuously increasing renewable distributed generation (DG) penetration rate significantly reduces environmental pollution and power generation cost and satisfies society’s rapid growth in electricity demand. Nevertheless, high penetration of renewable DGs, such as wind power and photovoltaics (PV), might deteriorate the system’s efficiency and reliability due to its intermittent and stochastic natures. Introducing battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to the distribution system provides a practical method to compensate for the above deficiency since it can deliver and absorb power when needed. Hence, it is important to determine the optimal allocation of BESS to achieve maximum assistance in the grid. This …

Predicting future frames through image-to-image translation and using these synthetically generated frames for high-speed ground vehicle teleoperation is a new concept to address latency and enhance operational performance. In the immediate previous work, the image quality of the predicted frames was low and a lot of scene detail was lost. To preserve the structural details of objects and improve overall image quality in the predicted frames, several novel ideas are proposed herein. A filter has been designed to remove noise from dense optical flow components resulting from frame rate inconsistencies. The Pix2Pix base network has been modified and a structure-aware …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Understanding market participants' competitive behaviour is essential for optimising financial performance in liberalised electricity markets. However, this is challenging due to complex market structures, generation dependent on different primary energy sources and lack of transparency. This paper introduces a novel approach using power spectrum analysis applied to wholesale electricity markets to uncover hidden patterns. Applying this novel method to the Western Australian Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) revealed periodic cycles in different fuel types and technologies that offered insights into competitor behaviour not immediately evident in the dataset. Surprisingly, the approach uncovered that in a power system with high penetration of …

Mindfulness has recently gained popularity in applied settings to enhance workplace safety, especially in safety-critical occupations such as healthcare and construction. In this review, we synthesize existing research across disciplines to establish a theoretical model of mindfulness and safety. Based on 32 empirical studies, we first summarize and critically analyze how mindfulness and safety are conceptualized and operationalized in the literature. We then consolidate empirical findings and conceptual arguments and draw upon the job demands–resources model to propose a theoretical model linking the basic benefits of mindfulness to safety-related job demands. Specifically, we propose that mindfulness (a) improves detection of …

Managing fragile island freshwater resources requires identifying pumping strategies that trade off the financial cost of groundwater supply against controlling the seawater intrusion (SWI) associated with aquifer pumping. In this work, these tradeoffs are investigated through a sensitivity analysis conducted in the context of an optimization formulation of the groundwater management problem, which aims at minimizing the groundwater supply operation cost associated with groundwater pumping and desalination treatment, subject to constraints on SWI control, as quantified by the water table drawdown over the well (∆s), the reduction in freshwater volume (∆FV) in the aquifer, or the salt mass increase (∆SM) …

A Phenomenological Model For Creep And Creep-Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Behavior In Ferritic Steels, Ashok Saxena
A Phenomenological Model For Creep And Creep-Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Behavior In Ferritic Steels, Ashok Saxena
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A model to rationalize the effects of test temperature and microstructural variables on the creep crack growth (CCG) and creep-fatigue crack growth (CFCG) rates in ferritic steels is described. The model predicts that as the average spacing between grain boundary particles that initiate creep cavities decrease, the CCG and CFCG rates increase. Further, the CCG data at several temperatures collapse into a single trend when a temperature compensated CCG rate derived from the model is used. The CCG and CFCG behavior measured at different temperatures is used to assess the effects of variables such as the differences between the base …

Framing Automation Trust: How Initial Information About Automated Driving Systems Influences Swift Trust In Automation And Trust Repair For Human Automation Collaboration, Scott Anthony Mishler
Framing Automation Trust: How Initial Information About Automated Driving Systems Influences Swift Trust In Automation And Trust Repair For Human Automation Collaboration, Scott Anthony Mishler
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The study examines how trust in automation is influenced by initial framing of information before interaction and how later active calibration methods can further influence trust repair or dampening after an automation error in a three-experiment study. As more human drivers begin to use automated driving systems (ADSs) for the first time, their initial understanding of the system can influence their trust leading to a miscalibration of trust. Prior studies have investigated how trust develops through interactions with an automated system, but few have looked at integrating swift trust and framing to calibrate trust before interaction and investigate further active …
Framework For Implementing Advanced Radar Plotting Aid Capability For Small Maritime Vessels, Jason Stark Harris
Framework For Implementing Advanced Radar Plotting Aid Capability For Small Maritime Vessels, Jason Stark Harris
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Every year in the United States many people are killed or injured when maritime vessels collide with other vessels or fixed objects. According to the United States Coast Guard, the top contributing factors to these collisions are operator inattention, operator inexperience and an improper lookout. Larger commercial vessels are required to have RADAR systems which support Automatic RADAR Plotting Aid (ARPA) which can automatically detect collisions and alert an operator to change course. These systems can be very expensive which put them out of reach of the average recreational boater. It is however possible to implement a low cost ARPA …

Machine Learning Approach To Activity Categorization In Young Adults Using Biomechanical Metrics, Nathan Q. C. Holland
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Inactive adults often have decreased musculoskeletal health and increased risk factors for chronic diseases. However, there is limited data linking biomechanical measurements of generally healthy young adults to their physical activity levels assessed through questionnaires. Commonly used data collection methods in biomechanics for assessing musculoskeletal health include but are not limited to muscle quality (measured as echo intensity when using ultrasound), isokinetic (i.e., dynamic) muscle strength, muscle activations, and functional movement assessments using motion capture systems. These assessments can be time consuming for both data collection and processing. Therefore, understanding if all biomechanical assessments are necessary to classify the activity …

This study focused on the development of a magnesium doped ion-sieve composite to extract lithium from an aqueous solution using adsorption process. The extraction process will provide a sustainable alternative to the currently practiced solar evaporation/concentration method which is very slow (takes 24 months) and water intensive. Currently, most of the lithium in the world comes from the mining of lithium or from the evaporative extraction process from the brine. Additionally, the Salton Sea area geothermal brines are recognized as potentially important domestic sources of lithium. Lithium concentration in geothermal brines from the Salton Sea area is reported to be …
An Effective Model For Dynamic Properties Of Local Soils And Their Influence On Seismic Response Of A Typical Reinforced Concrete Building, Kaveh Zehtab
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation presents an effective model to determine the dynamic properties of local soils and their impact on the seismic response of a typical mid-height reinforced concrete building. The results of the study suggest that the use of global models and empirical relationships for the dynamic properties of soils may not consider the effects of unique stress conditions on the cyclic response of the foundation soil. The study also investigates the seismic response of a site in central Adapazarı, Turkey, where four- to seven-story buildings suffered significant damage during the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. A new model is presented that combines …
