Steroid hormones, classified as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), pose significant environmental and health concerns due to their persistence and potential adverse effects. This study investigates the presence of estrone (E1) in hospital wastewater and the efficiency of E1 removal through a photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR). Wastewater samples were collected from two hospitals with different wastewater treatment processes. The concentration of E1 was analyzed using a combination of solid phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The PMR experimental setup involved a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane incorporated with 1 wt% titanium dioxide (PVDF/TiO2). The PMR performance was evaluated with and …

Theoretical Approaches To Food Waste Behaviours: An Overview, Dane Chia, Chin Choo Yap, Mohamed Kheireddine Aroua, Lai Ti Gew
Applied Environmental Research
Food waste around the world has emerged as a pressing issue that calls for attention and intervention. Analysing the food waste problem without understanding wasteful behaviour antecedents may oversimplify this multi-faceted issue, which will then compromise the development of interventions. This paper provides an overview of the theoretical approaches to food waste behaviour antecedents, followed by evidence-based interventions, using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the Norm Activation Model (NAM), and the Social Practice Theory (SPT). These theories encompass the psychological, behavioural, societal, material, and structural factors that influence food waste practices. Our aim is to provide a holistic understanding …

Unraveling The Effects Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Plant Growth, Nutrient Content, And Heavy Metal Accumulation In The Contaminated Soil: A Meta-Analysis, Bela Putra, Anuraga Jayanegara, Irwan Susanto
Applied Environmental Research
This study evaluated the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on plant growth, nutrient uptake, and heavy metal accumulation on polluted land using a meta-analysis approach. Data from 33 relevant studies were selected based on inclusion criteria, specifically articles in English, observational research, and investigating the role of AMF in plant growth and productivity on polluted land. The results showed that plants inoculated with AMF experienced significant accumulation of heavy metals in roots, such as Pb (p<0.01), Ni (p<0.01), Cr (p<0.01), Mn (p<0.05), Fe (p<0.05), and As (p<0.05). The AMF significantly reduced the accumulation of heavy metals such as Cr, Ni, Fe, and Cu on the upper part of fodder forage (p<0.01). Forage growth was also enhanced due to AMF. The AMF greatly increased the fresh weight, length, and phosphorus (P) content of fodder forage roots (p<0.01). It also increased the plant's biomass, fresh weight, dry weight, height, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) contents (p<0.01). In conclusion, AMF is important in increasing plant growth, nutrient uptake and reducing heavy metal accumulation in forage on polluted land.

Interest in the study and characterization of aerosols has been growing given its multiple connections with air quality and climate. However, the limited ground-based stations for measurements in many countries are not enough to completely study a big city or a region. Low-cost technology arises as a viable alternative to improve the spatial resolution of measurements. This study aims to demonstrate that the properties of aerosols may change within a megacity and that is advisable to segment measurements according to their characteristics. We measured the optical properties of aerosols in the outskirts of Buenos Aires and compared the data obtained …

Assessing Stormwater Management Pond Water Quality, Function, And The Potential Biotic Effects To Receiving Waters, Mitchell Elstone
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The use of stormwater management ponds (SWMPs) has been increasing over the past five decades. However, an in-depth understanding of the daily performance of SWMPs and functionality during cold periods is limited. This is in part because mandated monitoring is relatively infrequent, and the assumption that SWMPs are inactive between storm events and during the winter. The goals of this research were to better understand daily stormwater (SW) characteristics, the performance of SWMPs based on current forms of evaluation and assess the potential for SWMP effluent to impact downstream biota. Influent and effluent samples from two SWMPs were collected daily …

The hydrolysis of cellulose using ionic liquid (IL) has been extensively studied but there is limited understanding of the removal of IL from the biomass hydrolysate. Finding a suitable method for the recovery and reuse of IL is one of the biggest challenges before its large-scale application. Selecting an appropriate combined recovery process is very important. This study proposed a facile ion-exchange combined method for the recovery of IL from the modeled cellulose hydrolysate mixture containing sugars as well as γ-valerolactone (GVL) via an adsorption–desorption mechanism using sulfonic acid cation-exchange (Amberlyst 15 (H)) resin. The results showed that the resin …
Sparse Representation Learning For Temporal Networks, Maxwell Mcneil
Sparse Representation Learning For Temporal Networks, Maxwell Mcneil
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Temporal networks arise in many domains including activity of social network users, sensor network readings over time, and time course gene expression within the interaction network of a model organism. Data of this type contains a wealth of prior information such as the connectivity among nodes (e.g., a friendship graph), and prior knowledge of expected temporal patterns (e.g., periodicity). Modeling these temporal and network patterns jointly is essential for state-of-the-art performance in temporal network data analysis and mining. Sparse dictionary encoding is one modeling approach for such underlying patterns. However, most classical approaches consider only one dimension of the data …
Leveraging Redundancy As A Link Between Spreading Dynamics On And Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa
Leveraging Redundancy As A Link Between Spreading Dynamics On And Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
A constant quest in network science has been in the development of methods to identify the most relevant components in a dynamical system solely via the interaction structure amongst its subsystems. This information allows the development of control and intervention strategies in biochemical signaling and epidemic spreading. We highlight the relevant components in heterogeneous dynamical system by their patterns of redundancy, which can connect how dynamics affect network topology and which pathways are necessary to spreading phenomena on networks. In order to measure the redundancies in a large class of empirical systems, we develop the backbone of directed networks methodology, …
Characterization And Measurement Limitations Using Non-Destructive Mueller Matrix Scatterometry (Mmse) And X-Ray Diffraction (Xxrd) Techniques For Gate All Around (Gaa) Transistor Test Structures: Limitations And Superlattice Effects In Advanced Si/Si(1-X)Ge(X) Superlattice Nanowire Test Structures And Measurability Of Simulated Horizontal Gaa Test Structures, Ezra Mel Beltran Pasikatan
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Advanced semiconductor devices are moving toward 3D geometries due to scaling demands and performance requirements. Nondestructive metrology necessary for process control of 3D structures must be advanced to facilitate their transition from technology development to high volume manufacturing. Thin film metrology using Mueller Matrix Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (MMSE) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) film metrology, as well as patterned structure metrology using Optical Critical Dimension (OCD) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) techniques have proved capable of measuring the Si/ Si(1-x)Ge(x) superlattices and gate-all-around (GAA) transistor test structures. Because these techniques are indirect, their limitations associated with superlattice device structures need …

An Fpga-Based Eit System For Deep Space Medical Imaging, Kendall R. Farnham
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Dangers associated with high radiation and microgravity exposure in space are critical challenges inhibiting us from exploring deep space and pursuing long-duration missions, as current medical systems are unable to monitor, diagnose, or treat tissue injury within physical spacecraft constraints and communication limits. Ultrasound (US) is the current imaging system used on the International Space Station, but this technology relies on telemedical support (or onboard artificial intelligence/autonomous capabilities) for both operation and diagnosis, posing challenges for crews isolated in deep space. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, non-ionizing technology that produces images of the electrical properties of tissues and …
Disentangling Cyclic Causality: An Instance-Based Framework For Causal Discovery, Chase A. Yakaboski
Disentangling Cyclic Causality: An Instance-Based Framework For Causal Discovery, Chase A. Yakaboski
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Correlation does not imply causation" is one of the fundamental principles taught in science, emphasizing that associations between variables do not necessarily indicate causality. Yet, over the past three decades, extensive research has begun to challenge this perspective by developing sophisticated methods to differentiate causal from correlative relationships. This research suggests that correlations often involve a blend of confounded and causal interactions, which, given certain assumptions, can be disentangled to uncover actionable insights and deepen our understanding of physical, biological, and societal systems.
Accurately discovering causal relationships from data amidst cyclic dynamics remains a challenging open problem in causality research. …

Analysis, Optimization, And Design Of Small-Scale Hybrid-Core Inductor Designs That Achieve High Energy Densities And Low Loss, Andrew B. Nadler
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
As the size of power converters and other electronics has shrunk over time, miniaturization of passive magnetic components, namely inductors and transformers, has fallen behind. Much of this is due to magnetic scaling laws, which degrade inductor performance at reduced sizes, in contrast to other common power converter components, such as transistors and capacitors, which are conducive to construction from smaller parallel cells. This does not mean high performance and small sizes are unachievable with magnetic components, but rather that intelligent and creative magnetics design is increasingly critical.
Typical inductors utilize a conductive winding wrapped around a magnetic core, with …

The Impacts Of Impurities And Stress State On Polycrystalline Ice Deformation And Investigations Into The Densification Of Polar Firn, Ayobami Oladapo Ogunmolasuyi
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Glacier ice cores are unparalleled natural archives of past climate, containing ancient air and impurities. Understanding glacier and ice sheet behavior and their impact on impurity records is crucial for interpreting ice core records. H2SO4 is particularly significant, as it provides the strongest evidence for the diffusion of chemical signals and decreases the strength of single crystals and polycrystals of ice. However, its effects on recrystallization, grain growth, and fabric development mechanisms, as well as the effects of grain boundaries on its post-depositional diffusion remain unclear.

The scattering of electromagnetic waves by isotropic dielectric cylinders can be dramatically modified by means of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin-film coatings. Efficient dynamic control of scattering is achieved due to the variations in material parameters realizable by means of external biasing. In this paper, we study the scattering of terahertz waves in a case where the coating shells are made of VO2, a phase-change material, whose thin films may work rather as electromagnetic phase screens in the insulator material phase, but as lossy quasi-metallic components in the metallic material phase. The shells that uniformly cover the …

A Memory Efficient Deep Recurrent Q-Learning Approach For Autonomous Wildfire Surveillance, Jeremy A. Cantor
A Memory Efficient Deep Recurrent Q-Learning Approach For Autonomous Wildfire Surveillance, Jeremy A. Cantor
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature demonstrates that autonomous UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have the po- tential to be utilized for wildfire surveillance. This advanced technology empowers firefighters by providing them with critical information, thereby facilitating more informed decision-making processes. This thesis applies deep Q-learning techniques to the problem of control policy design under the objective that the UAVs collectively identify the maximum number of locations that are under fire, assuming the UAVs can share their observations. The prohibitively large state space underlying the control policy motivates a neural network approximation, but prior work used only convolutional layers to extract spatial fire information from …

This thesis investigates the effectiveness of microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) using the recently introduced bioslurry treatment method via surface percolation. To simulate realistic water forcing conditions, a piston-style erosion rate testing apparatus, specifically the Florida Department of Transportation Sediment Erosion Rate Flume, was used. Initial tests conducted at a high shear stress of 42 Pa revealed that a combination of 15% bioslurry and 85% cementation solution exhibited the strongest erosion resistance when compared to other ratios between bioslurry and cementation solution. Subsequent experiments focused on separating the specimen into a "loose" part and a “surface crust,” with shear stresses …

The increasing prevalence of cyber-attacks poses a significant concern, particularly within critical infrastructures like the power system. Such attacks have the potential to cause substantial impacts on essential services, economic stability, and national security. Energy storage systems (ESS) are integral components of the power grid and are particularly vulnerable to cyber threats. These vulnerabilities can be exploited through various means, including two-way communication, web portals, and remote access.
Given the critical nature of ESS, the ability to detect and mitigate malicious cyber-attacks is imperative. Various methods can be employed for cyber-attack detection, including signature-based, anomaly-based, and behavior-based approaches. In this …

Pervious Oyster Shell Habitats (POSH) are novel living shoreline components that were recently developed and deployed along several shorelines in northeast Florida. POSH units are designed to provide a breakwater using only recycled eastern oyster shell and Portland cement. However, the hydrodynamic performance of these unique structures had never been tested, so it was unclear how they affected wave energy. During this study, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to compare wave attenuation from POSH units to wave attenuation from geometrically similar and commercially available Reef BallsTM (specifically, the OysterBreak series of units). Experiments included a range of …

Challenges in computational biology, such as genome rearrangement, and applications in optical character recognition, like zoning techniques, often require solving optimization problems. These involve reordering scrambled sequences of numbers into a sequential arrangement known as the identity permutation.
Rearranging any given permutation into the identity permutation with the minimum number of specific operations related to strips gives rise to various combinatorial optimization scenarios. Operations such as strip moves, transpositions, reversals, and block interchanges have been extensively researched.
This thesis builds on the foundational work of Roy et al., targeting the refinement of their cycle graph algorithm for sorting by strip …

Florida encounters multiple natural disasters every year, making evacuation a critical mitigation plan when severe impacts are predicted. Evacuation is a complex procedure that involves everything from household decision-making to large-scale traffic network analysis. It also addresses logistical issues, such as transporting impacted people to shelters or medical centers. Access to shelters, gas stations, and lodgings is of utmost importance, as numerous studies and surveys have shown that some people prefer not to evacuate, even if they perceive the disaster risk to be very high.
Based on this, the present study follows two phases to address gaps in evacuation studies. …
