The use of nature-based solutions (NbS) to address the risks posed by hydro-meteorological hazards have not yet become part of the mainstream policy response, and one of the main reasons cited for this, is the lack of evidence that they can effectively reduce disaster risk. This paper addresses this issue, by providing model-based evidence from five European case studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of five different NbS in reducing the magnitude of the hazard and thus risk, in present-day and possible future climates. In OAL-Austria, the hazard is a deep-seated landslide, and the NbS analysed is afforestation. Modelling results …

Advances In Control Strategies For Cyberphysical Systems Incorporating Quantum Computing, High-Fidelity Simulation Methods, And Space Communication Concerns, Kip Nieman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Continuing advances and new applications in manufacturing and the systems engineering field lead to increased demands on controllers, models, simulation tools, and computer systems. Utilizing these new technologies can have profound consequences on control of the physical system itself, and the interactions between these aspects will need to be understood to ensure economic efficiency, safety, and secure operation. It is not always clear how implementing new technologies will impact the control of a process, especially when the modes of operation of the technology or the process itself are unusual or unknown. To address this, the work presented in this thesis …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This work presents two objectives for the use of robust sliding mode controller (SMC) in optimal and multi-objective settings to regulate the position of the knee joint angle for patients suffering from knee injuries. The controller imitates the role of active orthoses that produce the joint torques required to overcome gravity and loading forces and regain natural human movements. The first objective is to focus only on the knee, for which a mathematical model of the shank, the lower part of the leg, is derived first and then used for the control system design and computer simulations. Four objectives are …

Evaluation Of Driveway Assistance Device (Dad) Systems In One-Lane Two-Way Work Zone, Mm Shakiul Haque, Aemal J. Khattak, Li Zhao

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Lane closure on two-lane highways due to the presence of work zones negatively impacts traffic safety and operational efficiency. Additionally, traffic from access points (e.g., commercial and residential driveways, or minor side roads) within work zones make operations more complicated and inefficient. Deploying a driveway assistance device (DAD) system can enable more efficient traffic control for work zones with access points. While traffic agencies are becoming interested in DAD deployments, research on such systems is relatively sparse. This research was the first in-depth operational investigation of the DAD system under different signal strategies, traffic conditions, and work zone characteristics. This …

Plant growth and food security depend heavily on phosphorus (P). Recovering and recycling P from animal, municipal, and food waste streams can significantly reduce dependency on traditional mineral P. This is particularly pertinent in the EU regions with limited native P supplies. The agronomic performance of including P-based recycling-derived fertilisers (two struvite and two ashes) or cattle slurry was compared to a conventional mineral P fertilisation programme along with no P and no fertiliser controls over three years. A field-scale experiment was set up to evaluate the perennial ryegrass dry matter yield (DMY), P uptake, and soil test P effects. …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The adoption of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has sparked considerable interest across diverse industries, including public transportation, underground mining, and agriculture sectors. However, CAVs' reliance on sensor readings makes them vulnerable to significant threats. Manipulating these readings can compromise CAV network security, posing serious risks for malicious activities. Although several anomaly detection (AD) approaches for CAV networks are proposed, they often fail to: i) detect multiple anomalies in specific sensor(s) with high accuracy or F1 score, and ii) identify the specific sensor being attacked. In response, this paper proposes a novel framework tailored to CAV networks, called CAV-AD, for …

Tuning Selectivity Of Ni/Al2o3 Catalysts In Co2 Hydrogenation By Addition Of N, S-Doped Carbon, Nipitpon Jarumalai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study investigates the enhancement of Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation by incorporating nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon (NSC). A series of catalysts Ni/Al2O3 and its NSC-modified counterparts (Ni1NSC/Al2O3, Ni3NSC/Al2O3, Ni7NSC/Al2O3, and Ni15NSC/Al2O3) were synthesized via thermal treatment under a nitrogen atmosphere and systematically characterized. Techniques including TGA, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS confirmed successful NSC incorporation. Further structural and surface analysis using TEM, XRD, CO-IR, CO2-TPD, H2-TPD, and H2-TPR revealed that NSC modification influenced Ni dispersion, surface basicity, hydrogen activation, and the electronic state of Ni species. Catalytic performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor under a CO2:H2 ratio of …

Strain-Dependent Activity-Stability Relations In Ruo2 And Iro2 Oxygen Evolution Catalysts, Payal Chaudhary, Alexandra Zagalskaya, Herbert Over, Vitaly Alexandrov

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Strain engineering is an effective strategy in modulating activity of electrocatalysts, but the effect of strain on electrochemical stability of catalysts remains poorly understood. In this work, we combine ab initio thermodynamics and molecular dynamics simulations to examine the role of compressive and tensile strain in the interplay between activity and stability of metal oxides considering RuO2 and IrO2 as exemplary catalysts. We reveal that although compressive strain leads to improved activity via the adsorbate-evolving mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction, even small strains should substantially destabilize these catalysts promoting dissolution of transition metals. In contrast, our results …
