Adaptively Managing Lake Powell Releases To Respond To Reservoir Inflow And Evaporation, Motasem Abualqumboz, Braden Chamberlain, David Rosenberg
Adaptively Managing Lake Powell Releases To Respond To Reservoir Inflow And Evaporation, Motasem Abualqumboz, Braden Chamberlain, David Rosenberg
Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
Across the Western U.S., reservoir levels are declining towards protection elevations because of aridity amplified by long-standing operations that release more water than inflow. This paper has the purpose to sketch the effects of reservoir operations that release less water than inflow and evaporation. We use the case of Glen Canyon Dam/Lake Powell on the Colorado River, U.S.A. We programed a new rule in the trusted basin simulation model maintained by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The rule releases 95% of inflow in each time step. The 5% reduction is typically greater than reservoir evaporation. Lake Powell levels stabilize and …

Zno Varistors—Preparation Of Nano And Micro Sized Powders By Mechanical Methods For Low And High Voltage Varistors, Maura Kelleher
Books/Book Chapters
ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 varistors are as essential today as they have been since their discovery five decades ago. Their role is to protect other electronic components against oncoming surges of electrons and survive. The demands on varistors are increasing. Electronic components are becoming smaller and more sensitive, and the metal oxides from which varistors are made are precious. Every aspect of their structure (macro, micro, nano and atomic) determines how they perform and survive. Each stage and variable within the powder metallurgy process is important. The mechanical methods in preparing nano and micro sized metal oxide powders are outlined in this chapter.
Dice Are Blessed Or Cursed, Warren Campbell, Cameron Miller
Dice Are Blessed Or Cursed, Warren Campbell, Cameron Miller
SEAS Faculty Publications
Dice are cursed or blessed; that is, they roll low or high, but they are never fair. They cannot be manufactured with uniform density and geometric precision. This is particularly true of 20-sided dice or D20s. Faces are smaller than 6-sided dice, and manufacturing tolerances are similar. However, some dice are fairer than others. In our studies of plastic-mold dice about 1 in 4 test fair in 3000 rolls. We have used different statistical tests, including chi-square, modified Kolmogorov Smirnov, and double binomial tests. Of these, the method that consistently performed better is the chi-square goodness of fit test. The …

A 3d Dlt View Correction Tool For Manual Digitizing: A Cross-Platform Application For Correcting Shifted Image Coordinates Prior To Object Coordinate Reconstruction, William Moynihan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
While 3D direct linear transformation is a versatile motion capture method, care must be taken so that the cameras are not bumped or adjusted between the object space calibration phase and the end of video recording. Disturbing the cameras during this time will misalign the view, making the movement data invalid for the associated calibration. The purpose of this study was to design and validate a cross-platform software application for transforming image coordinates from a bumped camera to be compatible with the object space calibration and to determine the relationship between reconstruction error and changes to bumped camera views.

Granular physics was applied to concrete mixture design …
The Trouble With Technology, John O'Connor
The Trouble With Technology, John O'Connor
Conference Papers
In contemporary education, technology is either hailed as the panacea for affordable mass education or dreaded as a threat to our humanity. At the European Culture and Technology Laboratory, technology is understood in the context of the Ancient Greek origin of the word: technē—meaning a system or a method of making or doing, an art or a craft; a technique or a practice, even a way of thinking. The tools humans use are not merely a means of intervention in our environment but also a way of becoming human and thus, technology has a fundamental impact on our identity and …

Freyr⁺: Harvesting Idle Resources In Serverless Computing Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Hanfei Yu, Hao Wang, Jian Li, Xu Yuan, Seung Jong Park
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Serverless computing has revolutionized online service development and deployment with ease-to-use operations, auto-scaling, fine-grained resource allocation, and pay-as-you-go pricing. However, a gap remains in configuring serverless functions - the actual resource consumption may vary due to function types, dependencies, and input data sizes, thus mismatching the static resource configuration by users. Dynamic resource consumption against static configuration may lead to either poor function execution performance or low utilization. This paper proposes Freyr+, a novel resource manager (RM) that dynamically harvests idle resources from over-provisioned functions to accelerate under-provisioned functions for serverless platforms. Freyr+ monitors each function's resource utilization in real-time …
