Machine Embroidery Of Light-Emitting Textiles With Multicolor Electroluminescent Threads, Seungse Cho, Taehoo Chang, Tianhao Yu, Sunland L. Gong, Chi Hwan Lee

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Advances in electroluminescent threads, suitable for weaving or knitting, have opened doors for the development of light-emitting textiles, driving growth in the market for flexible and wearable displays. Although direct embroidery of these textiles with custom designs and patterns could offer substantial benefits, the rigorous demands of machine embroidery challenge the integrity of these threads. Here, we present embroiderable multicolor electroluminescent threads—in blue, green, and yellow—that are compatible with standard embroidery machines. These threads can be used to stitch decorative designs onto various consumer fabrics without compromising their wear resistance or light-emitting capabilities. Demonstrations include illuminating specific messages or designs …

Identification Of Faulty Sensor Nodes In Wban Using Genetically Linked Artificial Neural Network, Haider Rasheed Abdulshaheed, Mayasa M. Abdulrahman, Israa Ibraheem Al_Barazanchi, Jamal Fadhil Tawfeq

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) have risen as a promising innovation for checking human physiological parameters in real time. Be that as it may, the unwavering quality and precision of WBANs depend on the right working of sensor hubs. The distinguishing proof of defective sensor hubs is vital for guaranteeing the quality of information collected by WBANs. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to recognizing faulty sensor hubs in WBAN employing a hereditarily linked artificial neural organize (GLANN). The GLANN is preparedto employa crossbreedfuzzy-genetic calculation to optimize its execution in distinguishing defective sensor hubs. The proposed approach is …

Utilizing Culturally Responsive Strategies To Inspire African American Female Participation In Cybersecurity, Deanna Bailey, Michel Kornegay, Ladawn Partlow, Charnee Bowens, Karen Gareis, Kevin Kornegay

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The number of African American females participating in cyber fields is significantly low. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education requires a new approach to student engagement to increase African American female participation in cybersecurity. The most common approach to engaging more African American females in STEM is to provide students access to professional images or role models active in STEM; however, more is needed. More race-centered strategies beyond role modeling are necessary to attract and retain African American females in STEM. Research studies show that integrating personal experiences and making cultural connections can help improve student participation in STEM …

A Prediction Of Interfacial Tension By Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation: A Study On Effects Of Cushion Gas (Co2, N2 And Ch4) For Underground Hydrogen Storage, Quoc T. Doan, Alireza Keshavarz, Caetano R. Miranda, Peter Behrenbruch, Stefan Iglauer

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel consumption have caused global warming and remain challenging problems for mitigation. Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) provides clean fuel and replaces traditional fossil fuels to reduce emissions of CO2. Geological formations such as depleted oil/gas reservoirs, deep saline aquifers and shale formations have been recognized as potential targets to inject and store H2 into the subsurface formations for large-scale implementation of CCS and UHS. However, the presence of H2 with cushion gas at different fractions under different geo-storage conditions, which can influence Hydrogen's flow properties, was not investigated widely. Until now, studies of interfacial …

Thermo-Photo Catalytic Anode Process For Carbonate-Superstructured Solid Fuel Cells, Hanrui Su, Yun Hang Hu

Michigan Tech Publications

Converting hydrocarbons and greenhouse gases (i.e., carbon dioxide, CO2) directly into electricity through fuel cells at intermediate temperatures (450 to 550 °C) remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the sluggish activation of C-H and C=O bonds. Here, we demonstrated a unique strategy to address this issue, in which light illumination was introduced into the thermal catalytic CO2reforming of ethane in the anode as a unique thermo-photo anode process for carbonate-superstructured solid fuel cells. The light-enhanced fuel activation led to excellent cell performance with a record-high peak power density of 168 mW cm-2at an intermediate temperature of 550 °C. Furthermore, …

The aim of the work is to study the wave processes in three-winding power transformers caused by impulse overvoltage, to create an improved mathematical model for reproducing the process of distribution and transmission of the impulse in the windings of a three-winding power transformer. A mathematical model has been developed for the study of internal overvoltage in the windings of three-winding power transformers, based on the proposed substitute circuit of an infinitesimal element, taking into account the longitudinal and transverse inductive connections between the turns of the winding, the electromagnetic connections between the windings and the flux splitting from the …

The Effect Of Blasting Using Low-Density Emulsion Explosives, Vinko Škrlec, Mario Dobrilović, Barbara Štimac Tumara, Vječislav Bohanek Jan 2024

The Effect Of Blasting Using Low-Density Emulsion Explosives, Vinko Škrlec, Mario Dobrilović, Barbara Štimac Tumara, Vječislav Bohanek

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Low-density emulsion explosives are essentially blends of an emulsion matrix and a certain amount of gaseous phase inclusions acting as hot spots. With the addition of expanded polystyrene for gaseous sensibilization, the resulting explosive blend was developed to reduce peak values and pressure impulse of gaseous detonation products on surrounding rock. This resulted in a decrease in rock stress and a decrease in cracking zone width outside of the minefield boundary. The use of low-density emulsion explosives correlates with the decrease in the seismic effect of blasting, more precisely, the decrease of induced rock oscillation velocities. The low-density emulsion explosive …

Numerical Simulation On Effect Of Coal Pillar Width On Stability Of Retained Roadway: A Case Study Of Khe Cham Coal Mine, Vietnam, Quang Phuc Le, Tien Dung Le Jan 2024

Numerical Simulation On Effect Of Coal Pillar Width On Stability Of Retained Roadway: A Case Study Of Khe Cham Coal Mine, Vietnam, Quang Phuc Le, Tien Dung Le

Journal of Sustainable Mining

When extracting coal seams in Vietnam underground mines, coal pillars are often left unmined for the protection of retained roadways in the longwall mining method. During longwall mining operations, coal pillars are often placed where high-stress concentrations occur in the abutment pressure zone of adjacent panels, especially when extracting seams under hard-to-cave main roof conditions. The instability of coal pillars under the loading of the main roof may cause the roadway to collapse, threatening the safe operation of a coal mine. This paper presents a detailed numerical investigation of the effect of coal pillar width on the stability of retained …

Repeated Healing Of Low Velocity Impact Induced Damage In Orthogrid-Stiffened Sandwich Panel, Patrick Mensah, Guoqiang Li, Obed Tetteh

Faculty Publications

Herein, we present a new sandwich panel composed of a carbon fiber grid-stiffened shape memory vitrimer (SMV) core. The sandwich panels were fabricated via a pin-guided dry-weaving technology, and their impact responses were evaluated via low-velocity impact testing. The main failure mode observed after the first round of impact was the transverse cracking of the SMV matrix in the sandwich core. The healing efficiency according to the crack initiation energy (CIE) was found to be 76.5% after the first healing cycle. Even after the second healing cycle, the healing efficiency was greater than 72%. From the low-velocity impact tests, reinforcing …

Self-Healing Of Macroscopic Cracks In Concrete By Cellulose Fiber Carried Microbes, Emmanuel Igbokwe, Samuel Ibekwe, Patrick Mensah, Ogad Agu, Guoqiang Li

Faculty Publications

This research introduces a new approach to healing millimeter scale cracks in concrete using Lysinibaccilus Sphaericus Bacteria (LSB) encapsulated in cellulose fibers. Cracking in concrete, particularly macroscopic cracking, can cause premature structural failure and reduce its lifespan, which is a critical industry challenge. While bacteria encapsulated in cellulose fibers have been used to heal cement mortar, the studies are limited to heal much narrower cracks. In this study, we integrate LSB, known for its strong biocalcification abilities, with the protective environment of cellulose fibers, which are renewable and sustainable, for healing millimeter scale cracks in ordinary cement concrete. To understand …

In order to succeed in resolving troublesome urban transport problems, one should understand how transport demand occurs. The transport demand, which is derived demand, like the demand for a sewing machine derives from the demand for handmade clothes and the demand for marmalade derives from the demand for toast, is a result from people's need of participation in various social activities rather than the need of experiencing transportation system itself. Furthermore, travel pattern is intimately related to land use pattern, therefore instead of considering transportation and land use separately, both should be managed in parallel with each other to achieve …

Assessing The Relationship Between Contralateral Limb Synergy And Rock Climbing Efficiency, Jeromy Miramontes Jan 2024

Assessing The Relationship Between Contralateral Limb Synergy And Rock Climbing Efficiency, Jeromy Miramontes

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Rock climbing is a total body sport testing the mental and physical capabilities of athletes. Efficiency of movement can improve the ability of climbers to perform at a higher capacity and reduce the risk of injury. Data on the relationship between the continuous relative phase (CRP) of contralateral joint rotations and time to completion of a bouldering move are ways to assess rock climbing. This study aimed to assess this relationship, as well as the geometric entropy (GE) of the center of mass displacement when completing the bouldering move, and the metabolic efficiency over 4 min of bouldering. The study …
