Hydrogen (H2) production by steam methane reforming (SMR) is an economically viable technique on a commercial scale. However, this process produces large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), which eventually negates the benefits of employing H2 as an industrial input and clean energy carrier. This issue has led to increasing interest in capturing CO2 emissions from SMR to produce H2. This study proposes and investigates the use of coalbed methane (CBM) resources for separating the mixture of H2 and CO2 gases. The competitive adsorption mechanism in CBM not only can separate the H2 gas from the mixture but also results into …

The Effect Of Mechanical Strain On The Electronic Conductivity Of Α- Fe2o3: A Density Functional Theory Study, Sheriff Naziru Abdulmutalib
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogen has emerged as a promising future energy carrier due to its ability to produce zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when burned. However, the limited natural abundance of hydrogen necessitates the development of cost-effective and environmentally friendly methods for large-scale hydrogen production. Among the different hydrogen production approaches, photoelectrochemical water splitting, which employs a photoanode material in a cell using solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, is the focus of this work. α-Fe2O3 (hematite) is a photoanode material that shows a promising future for hydrogen generation in a photoelectrochemical cells due to its cheapness, availability, and its …

Theses and Dissertations
Residual stresses play a critical role in the mechanical behavior and structural integrity of engineered components. Understanding and quantifying these stresses are essential for ensuring the reliable performance and durability of materials and structures. Traditionally destructive methods are used that involve sample sectioning and material removal. However, non-destructive methods have gained popularity due to their advantages in preserving the specimen's integrity for further testing and material waste reduction. Among these techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) stands out as a powerful non-contact and full-field measurement approach. DIC captures displacements and strain distributions by analyzing the deformation of speckle patterns on the …

The inefficient design of pumping stations leads to undesirable flow characteristics and the formation of vortices in the sump. These undesirable flow features adversely affect the pumping unit performance and increase the operation and maintenance cost. The aim of this thesis is to assess the ability of the Realizable turbulence model to predict the formation of free-surface and submerged vortices within lateral pumping stations’ intakes. Additionally, the study aims to investigate the effect of the flow ratio and bottom clearance on the flow characteristics and the vortices formation in the sump. Finally, the study introduces an assessment of curtain walls …

Cardiac Active Tension Modeling Via Genetic Algorithm-Optimized Fractional Order Systems, Afnan Khaled Elhamshari
Theses and Dissertations
Developing a computational model to model cardiac activity has been increasingly important in recent decades. Accurate cell-level active tension modeling for cardiomyocytes is critical to understanding cardiac functionality on a patient-specific basis and developing an effective in-silico cardiac model. However, cell-level models in the literature fail to account for viscoelasticity and inter-patient variations in active tension. This research proposes a genetic algorithm-optimized, fractional order system to model cell-level active tension by extending Land’s state-of-the-art model of cardiac contraction. The model features the (left) Caputo derivative of six state variables that identify the mechanistic origins of viscoelasticity in a myocardial cell …

Reliable Outdoor Ai-Based Autonomous Uav Localization And Trajectory Tracking Using Cellular Networks, Ghada Afifi
Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming an integral part of numerous commercial and military applications. In many of these applications, the UAV is required to self-navigate in highly dynamic urban environments. Existing localization and trajectory planning techniques, which rely mainly on the Global Positioning System (GPS), do not provide an effective real-time solution for self-localization and path planning, particularly in dense urban environments. The purpose of this thesis is to study the localization and trajectory planning of UAVs independent of GPS systems or other detectable mobile signals. We propose to utilize the broadcast signals from existing cellular networks to localize …

Ether solvents are suitable for formulating solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI)-less ion-solvent cointercalation electrolytes in graphite for Na-ion and K-ion batteries. However, ether-based electrolytes have been historically perceived to cause exfoliation of graphite and cell failure in Li-ion batteries. In this study, we develop strategies to achieve reversible Li–solvent cointercalation in graphite through combining appropriate Li salts and ether solvents. Specifically, we design 1M LiBF4 1,2-dimethoxyethane (G1), which enables natural graphite to deliver ~91% initial Coulombic efficiency and >88% capacity retention after 400 cycles. We captured the spatial distribution of LiF at various length scales and quantified its heterogeneity. The electrolyte …

Theses and Dissertations
Cold spray technology lends itself as a versatile process to rapidly apply quality polymer coatings to various substrates; barring limited, although clearly demonstrated, success. The limited success of polymer sprays is a result of modern cold spray knowledge originating from studies with metals. Thus, a deeper understanding of how polymers behave in cold spray is needed to make polymer cold spray a commercially viable process. Various tools are used in this dissertation to progress the fundamental understanding of polymer cold spray as it relates to general processing parameters with a focus on characteristics that do not occur in metals. Polymer …

The decision-making process for pavement maintenance from a scientific perspective is based on accurate predictions of pavement performance. To improve the rationality of pavement performance indicators, comprehensive consideration of various influencing factors is necessary. To this end, four typical pavement performance indicators (i.e., Rutting Depth, International Roughness Index, Longitudinal Cracking, and Alligator Cracking) were predicted using the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database. Two types of data, i.e., local input variables and global input variables, were selected, and S-ANN and L-ANN models were constructed using a fully connected neural network. A comparative analysis of the predictive outcomes reveals the superior …

Modeling Of Single-Lap Joints With Auxetic Adhesive Utilizing Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Bondline Microstructures, Chatarina P. Puspaningtyas, Annisa Jusuf, Bambang K. Hadi, Arief Yudhanto
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Producing lightweight structures can be effectively achieved using adhesive bonding that incorporates a high-performance adhesive, eliminating the mechanical joints (rivet, bolts). Here, the proof-of-concept of tailoring the high-performance adhesive using microstructures exhibiting a negative Poisson's ratio (auxetic) is investigated using two single lap joint (SLJ) models developed in ABAQUS/Standard. The SLJ models consist of two rigid adherends that are bonded using either homogeneous or heterogeneous adhesive that produces auxetic response. In homogeneous adhesive, a negative value of Poisson's ratio is defined in the adhesive part of the models. In heterogeneous adhesive, the negative Poisson's ratio is obtained by explicitly building …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
When the laser was invented in 1960 by Theodore H.Maiman, the potential applications of this apparatus were far from clear. Indeed, even 4 years later, Maiman himself, in an interview with The New York Times, called the laser “a solution seeking a problem.”
Nearly 64 years later, it is safe to say that the laser’s influence on our everyday lives has been nearly beyond measure. Lasers are integral to CD and DVD readers, barcode readers, many computer printers, speed and distance sensors, and in various entertainment systems used in concerts and other events.

Life on a shared island, in particular the island of Ireland (comprising Ireland and Northern Ireland), presents both challenges and opportunities, including for engineers tasked with addressing problems to help solve the SDGs that are indifferent to boundaries. Research demonstrates that (relative to current engineers) the engineer of the future will require a more diverse range of skills to navigate an increasingly complex work environment. Given this context, identification of relevant priority skills would therefore prove useful in focusing engineering educational initiatives.
Building on a European study (Beagon et al, 2022a) which identified at a European level the professional skills …

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Coffee is one of the most universally consumed beverages. The world produces 60 million tons of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) as waste per year. Biodiesel made from SCGs is an eco-friendly alternative fuel but proves difficult to produce. 1,8-Diazabicyclo[ 5.4.0]undec-7- ene (DBU) was used as both a solvent and a catalyst with methanol to determine the efficiency of biodiesel production from SCGs. The process was completed by extracting coffee oil from acid-washed spent coffee grounds (AWSCGs) using hexane. The two extraction methods that were explored were Soxhlet and agitation. DBU is an interesting choice as a solvent and a catalyst …
