Agriculture, industry, and community life continue to impose great demands upon available sources of water, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Efficient utilization of water, demanding careful distribution and use, implies flow measurement.

The coordinate method for measuring pipe flow finds some application in industry where estimates must be made of the flow of fluids containing relatively large amounts of suspended solids that would render other measuring devices ineffective. Widest application may be found, however, in agriculture where a simple, quick, and inexpensive means for estimating well flow, pump discharge, drain efflux, etc., is necessary if the farmers are to …

In 1926, John T. Lynch read to the Kentucky Academy of Sciences a paper entitled, "The Relation Between Drainage Area and Waterway Required for Culverts and Small Bridges in Kentucky." The paper was based on a study of many small drainage structures then existing in the highway system, and a general evaluation of the performance of the structures in relation to rainfall and runoff from contributing watersheds.

In eastern Kentucky, deep deposits of sandstones and shales overlie the vast deposits of limestones that prevail throughout the central part of the state. Whereas locally available limestones of high quality comprise the major sources of crushed stone or aggregate for highway paving in the central part of the state, some areas of eastern Kentucky are so far removed from sources of these and other high-type aggregates that transportation of materials becomes a major cost item. Driving between Butte, and Whitehall, Montana, on highway U.S. 10S, one observes an interesting phenomenon in the lower end of Little Pipestone Creek canyon. One side and the bottom of the canyon is cut inthe hard igneous rocks of the Boulder Batholith, and the other side of the canyon is made of unconsoli­dated sand, gravel, and cobbles.

Flood routing through reservoirs serves several major functions. It makes possible the determination of the effect of a reservoir, whether constructed for flood control purposes alone or for other purposes, on historic or predicated future floods at the reservoir site. The effect at the dam site then provides a basis for calculating the effect downstream. It also aids in obtaining the proper manipulation of gated spillways on multiple purpose reservoirs to provide the most advantageous flood control on the stream and at the same time make the best use of the water for power, irrigation, or other purposes.

This report is concerned with a bank gravel base construction project, and particularly with that part of the base containing calcium chloride as a stabilizing agent. The project was carried out on a relocation of U.S. 62, between Kuttawa in Lyon County and Kentucky Dam on the Tennessee River. A part of the project, as shown on the general location map in Fig. 1, was in Livingston County between the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers.

Conchas Dam and Reservoir, one of the largest water resources projects in the Southwest, build under the supervision of Corps of Engineers, is located below the confluence of the Conchas River and South Canadian River, near Tucumcari, New Mexico. Although it is the source of water supply for the vast Tucumcari Irrigation Project of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, its main purpose is flood control. Conchas Dam exerts a tremendous influence on the economy of the northeastern portion of Texas. To a hydraulic engineer its large size and complex hydraulic features present a most challenging field for study and research

"The broad field of heat transfer is well developed in its theory and mathematics, however, some few applications of varying heat transfer rates have been explored only recently.

Previous to the nineteen-thirties, foundrymen had apparently been interested in heat transfer measurements only from the standpoint of the melting of metals and the heat treatment of the finished castings, with the rate of solidification and the transfer of heat from the casting through the mold being ignored, or at least accepted as an uncontrollable factor.
