The seismogenic characteristics of the Gulf of Aqaba zone have been assessed using the maximum likelihood method to estimate various earthquake recurrence parameters. These parameters encompass the β-value, annual recurrence rate (λ), and maximum probable magnitude (Mmax). This assessment has identified three sub-seismogenic zones, each corresponding to specific structural faults within the Gulf. These zones are associated with the Aragonese, Arnona and Aqaba faults, delineating pull-apart basin structures in the Gulf of Aqaba. An updated earthquake catalogue has been compiled using a unified moment magnitude (Mw) scale to improve the analysis, established by developing two empirical relationships. According to the …

Elasto-Plastic Behavior Of Single-Story Single-Bay Orthogonal Steel Space Frame Under Angular Earthquake, Mohammad Hamayoun Stanikzai
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A study of the elasto-plastic behavior of single-story single-bay orthogonal steel space frame under an angular earthquake ground motion is investigated. The building frame is subjected to a horizontal earthquake ground motion not aligned with the building’s principal axes. Such a frame can develop biaxial bending and torsion in its members. The governing differential equations of equilibrium for the typical biaxially loaded sway beam-column are presented and iteratively solved using a finite-difference scheme. The effects of warping and residual stresses are accounted for in the analysis. The equations are used to predict the quasi-static elasto-plastic response of the frame when …

Surgical Navigation In Image-Guided Transoral Robotic Surgery, Yuan Shi
Surgical Navigation In Image-Guided Transoral Robotic Surgery, Yuan Shi
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a minimally invasive approach in treating head and neck cancers and has demonstrated improved surgical outcomes with reduced morbidity when compared to traditional open surgery. However, the lack of haptic feedback makes it more difficult to assess the tumor extent and locate critical structures (e.g., artery and nerves). In standard-of-care TORS, preoperative imaging is used as guidance; however, it becomes inaccurate intraoperatively: the patient’s neck is hyper-extended, surgical instruments are introduced, and soft tissues deform significantly. As a result, the surgeon is required to mentally predict intraoperative deformation, which can lead to bleeding complications and …

A fashion e-commerce company offers a wide range of products from domestic and international brands that are popular with young people. However, there has been an increase in non-organically acquired customers, many of whom do not return to make repeat purchases. This has led to a higher customer churn rate, with a significant proportion of non-organically sourced customers failing to become repeat purchasers. Consequently, a churn analysis and prediction model were developed to address this issue. This paper employs the Recency, Frequency, and Monetary (RFM) framework for churn analysis and prediction. The framework is underpinned by three key dimensions: last …

Nonparametric Identification Of A Mems Resonator Actuated By Levitation Forces, Mohammed Abdel Razzaq, Rodrigo T. Rocha, Yu Tian, Shahrzad Towfighian, Sami F. Masri, Mohammad I. Younis
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
This work presents nonparametric identification of a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) beam subjected to a non-classical nonlinear electrostatic (levitation) force. The approach is based on the Restoring Force Surface method and the Chebyshev polynomials. The study examines the main challenges associated with the used approach as applied to small-scale systems, such as the inability to measure the restoring force and acceleration. In this work, we use a mix of analytical techniques, experimental data, and Lagrange polynomial interpolation to estimate the restoring forces of the system and its nonlinearities. The extracted results are compared with the measurements, which show excellent agreement. Results …

Ct Image Segmentation Using Optimization Techniques Under Neutrosophic Domain, Doaa El-Shahat, Nourhan Talal, Jun Ye, Wen-Hua Cui
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In this paper, we introduce a hybrid technique between optimization algorithms and neutrosophic theory. This new hybridization can deal with uncertainties in brain computed tomography (CT) images in three different memberships very effectively. To prove the real-time application of this theory, a new segmentation method for brain CT medical images is presented. The grayscale medical image suffers from uncertainties and inconsistencies in the gray levels due to their bad luminance. The proposed technique addressed this problem by performing neutrosophic operations on gray levels based on the S membership function.

A Connected-Component Improvement Procedure For Relative Isolation Probability Calculation, Renzo Roel P. Tan, Kazushi Ikeda
Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications
Due to the prevalence of natural disasters, the resilience of networks that provide essential services to the population has been studied. A recent contribution is the probability of relative isolation, which measures the likelihood of a demand node to be unreachable by supply nodes. The existing procedure for calculation is an enumerative decision-diagram-based approach that may be resource-intensive especially on occasions when time and memory constraints are imposed. In response, the study reverse-engineers the current method towards increased efficiency. The proposed solution hinges on the breadth-first search, producing connected components based on the sources. The algorithm is then benchmarked on …
Obliquely Impinging Jet Heat Transfer Fields: Effects Of Mach Number On Nozzle-To-Plate Distance, Thinnesh Ragupathy
Obliquely Impinging Jet Heat Transfer Fields: Effects Of Mach Number On Nozzle-To-Plate Distance, Thinnesh Ragupathy
Masters Theses
This study investigates the consistent features of heat flux patterns on surfaces impacted by jets at various Mach numbers, ranging from 0.1 to 1.0. It utilizes temperature-sensitive paint (TSP) analysis to examine how these patterns change. The research also explores the presence of self-similarity in both the fluctuation of heat flux and skin friction patterns, which are derived from temperature and heat flux data. A semi-empirical model is proposed to explain this self-similarity, suggesting that Mach number primarily affects heat flux patterns through the recovery temperature at the impact site.
Understanding the self-similarity of heat flux patterns across different Mach …
