Conceptual Design Methodology For The Fan-In-Wing Vtol Aircraft, Brock Steinfeldt Apr 2024

Conceptual Design Methodology For The Fan-In-Wing Vtol Aircraft, Brock Steinfeldt

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The Fan-In-Wing (FIW) aircraft concept is one of the most compelling solutions for missions demanding jet-like cruise speeds and Vertical TakeOff and Landing (VTOL) capability. However, despite years of interest and documented improvements in lift-fan technology, there exists little in the way of an adequate theory for conceptual design of a fan-in-wing aircraft. To address this issue, a general conceptual design methodology has been developed as a source of guidance for the FIW designer. Through this work, the top-level requirements ranking the fan-in-wing concept above other VTOL aircraft have been defined, while a cross-comparison between the FIW concept and conventional …

The study used an experimental design with three groups and two within-group measures of training effectiveness. The control group followed the current training program and was assessed in the FFS, while the second group was trained using …

State Omniscience For Cooperative Local Catalog Maintenance Of Close Proximity Satellite Systems, Chris Hays Apr 2024

State Omniscience For Cooperative Local Catalog Maintenance Of Close Proximity Satellite Systems, Chris Hays

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Resiliency in multi-agent system navigation is reliant on the inherent ability of the system to withstand, overcome, or recover from adverse conditions and disturbances. In large part, resiliency is achieved through reducing the impact of critical failure points to the success and/or performance of the system. In this view, decentralized multi-agent architectures have become an attractive solution for multi-agent navigation, but decentralized architectures place the burden of information acquisition directly on the agents themselves. In fact, the design of distributed estimators has been a growing interest to enable complex multi-sensor/multi-agent tasks. In such scenarios, it is important that each local …

Trustable Adaptive Controllers For Multi-Agent Systems With Actuator Dynamics, Atahan Kurttisi

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Multi-agent systems have become a powerful tool for a wide range of applications due to the effective and cheap solutions they offer. Especially during the last decade, they have impacted a wide array of civilian and military applications (e.g., surveillance, reconnaissance, and payload transportation). However, they suffer system anomalies due to the operational and material conditions, which yields degraded performance or even instability. Hence, this dissertation investigates the distributed adaptive control design process for uncertain multi-agent systems with scalar and high-order dynamics in the presence of unknown control effectiveness and actuator dynamics. First, it provides an approach for driving a …

Initial Orbit Determination Of Uncooperative Satellites Using Particle Swarm Optimization From The Point Of View Of A Novel Observer Orbit, Taylor Yow

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Initial orbit determination is an incredibly valuable tool in the field of space situational awareness (SSA). As the number of launches increases every year, more objects are being put into space around the Earth and with political tensions mounting between certain space-accessing countries such as the United States of America (USA), Russia, and China, the number of satellites whose orbits are unknown to a political rival are increasing as well. In this research, orbit estimation of uncooperative target satellites from the point of view of novel orbits using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is explored. Two cost functions for the …

Analysis And Improvement Of Efficient Charge Recovery Logic Adiabatic Circuits, William Morell Apr 2024

Analysis And Improvement Of Efficient Charge Recovery Logic Adiabatic Circuits, William Morell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Power consumption has been an ever-present concern since the dawn of electronic computing. Every operation that a device performs consumes some amount of energy and as the demand for computation increases, both in scale and ubiquity, reducing this energy loss becomes more important. While modern devices are orders of magnitude more efficient than their ancestors on a per-operation basis, they are increasingly used in more resource constrained applications. Tiny, Internet of Things (IoT) machines are prevalent these days and demanded to perform data collection and analysis at all hours of the day for days at a time on small battery. …

Wireless Power Transfer Using Cavity With Height Discontinuities, Linsheng Zhang Apr 2024

Wireless Power Transfer Using Cavity With Height Discontinuities, Linsheng Zhang

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

A novel device for efficient wireless power transfer (WPT) system is presented. The proposed WPT system utilizes modified microstrip antennas with height discontinuities (MAHDs) to achieve power transfer. Similar to the conventional WPT system using inductive devices, the power transmission relies on the magnetic field coupling in the near field region. However, the researcher can treat the isolated transmitter or receiver as a modified microstrip antenna, which resembles a capacitive device. Like a capacitive antenna, we can utilize the cavity model, which significantly simplifies field analysis, design and impedance matching process, reduces the overall space requirement, and potentially increases the …

Reducing Bias In Cyberbullying Detection With Advanced Llms And Transformer Models, Dahana Moz Ruiz, Annaliese Watson, Anjana Manikandan, Zachary Gordon

Center for Cybersecurity

This paper delved into a comprehensive exploration of the inherent biases present in Large Language Models (LLMs) and various Transformer models, with a focus on their role in identifying and addressing instances of cyberbullying. The objective was to refine and enhance the accuracy and fairness of these models by mitigating the biases deeply ingrained in their structures. This was crucial because language models could inadvertently perpetuate and amplify existing biases present in the data they were trained on.

Inertial Particle Clustering Due To Turbulence In An Air Jet, Bianca Viggiano, Kris Gish, Stephen Solovitz, Raul Bayoan Cal Apr 2024

Inertial Particle Clustering Due To Turbulence In An Air Jet, Bianca Viggiano, Kris Gish, Stephen Solovitz, Raul Bayoan Cal

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Explosive volcanic eruptions create turbulent plumes of fine ash particles. When these particles collide in the presence of moisture and electrostatic fields they combine into larger aggregates, which can significantly change the atmospheric residence time of the airborne cloud. Previous studies have suggested that turbulence may lead to preferential concentration—also known as clustering—of particles within the flow, increasing the likelihood of collisions and aggregation. Few experimental studies have quantified these processes for volcanic plumes. This behavior was investigated using a particle-laden air jet. By systematically varying the exit speed and the size, density, and concentration of particles, flows were produced …

First-Principles Calculations Of Lattice Thermal Conductivity In Tl,3Vse4: Uncertainties From Different Approaches Of Force Constants, Zhi Li, Yi Xia, Chris Wolverton

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accurate and reliable first-principles simulations of lattice thermal conductivity (κL) of highly anharmonic crystals have long been challenging in condensed matter and materials physics. With recent theoretical advances, the calculation of κL has evolved into a sophisticated process requiring the consideration of higher levels of refinements, such as high-order phonon-phonon scattering, anharmonic phonon renormalization, and heat transport beyond the phonon gas picture. Interatomic force constants (IFCs), however, as a shared pillar of the above concepts, are sometimes ambiguously implemented in this process, resulting in non-negligible uncertainties among different studies. Here, we revisit the ultralow κL of Tl3VSe4 and make a …

Effects Of Confinement On Opposed-Flow Flame Spread Over Cellulose And Polymeric Solids In Microgravity, Ankit Sharma, Yanjun Li, Ya-Ting T. Liao

Student Scholarship

Opposed-flow flame spread over solid materials has been investigated in the past few decades owing to its importance in the fundamental understanding of fires. These studies provided insights into the behavior of opposed-flow flames in different environmental conditions (e.g., flow speed, oxygen concentration). However, the effect of confinement on opposed-flow flames remains under-explored. It is known that confinement plays a critical role in concurrent-flow flame spread in normal and microgravity conditions. Hence, for a complete understanding, it becomes important to understand the effects of confinement for opposed-flow flames. In this study, microgravity experiments are conducted aboard the International Space Station …

The Game Of Traffic Lights (Tgotl), Faith Chapman

Posters - 2024

“Computer Science can be applied to nearly ANY field.” In college, and high school especially, the phrase is just that—early comp. sci (CS) students don’t have realworld examples of how/where else they can use CS knowledge outside of CS focused jobs. For high school students, this a missed opportunity to plan for a career outside the obvious. One such career is in traffic lights.

U.S. traffic can be better. Engineering has a subfield dedicated to improving traffic, and part of that entails studying ways to improve traffic lights’ efficacy. Someone with CS knowledge can program a traffic simulator for data …

Shorting At Long Duration: Impact Of Extended Discharge Capacity On Battery Solid Electrolytes, Ryan C. Hill, Amanda S. Peretti, Leo J. Small, Erik D. Spoerke, Yang-Tse Cheng

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Long-duration energy storage (LDES) is critical to a stable, resilient, and decarbonized electric grid. While batteries are emerging as important LDES devices, extended, high-power discharges necessary for cost-competitive LDES present new materials challenges. Focusing on a new generation of low-temperature molten sodium batteries, we explore here unique phenomena related to long-duration discharge through a well-known solid electrolyte, NaSICON. Specifically, molten sodium symmetric cells at 110 ° C were cycled at 0.1 A cm−2 for 1–23 h discharges. Longer discharges led to unstable overpotentials, reduced resistances, and decreased electrolyte strength, caused by massive sodium penetration not observed in shorter duration discharges. …
