The Iron-Holmium Binary System And Related Magnetic Properties, Gerald J. Roe

"The iron-holmium phase diagram was investigated to determine the alloying behavior of these two metals and to determine the magnetic properties of some of the iron-holmium alloys which formed intermediate phases. The iron-holmium binary system was determined by three experimental techniques, differential thermal analysis (DTA), x-ray diffraction, and metallography. A phase diagram with three eutectic points and four intermediate phases was constructed from the experimental data. The two phases, Ho₆Fe₂₃ and Ho₂Fe₁₇, melted congruently at 1322⁰C and 1343⁰C respectively. HoFe₂ and HoFe₃ melted incongruently at 1288⁰C and 1293⁰C respectively. Our recent report on "Rational Analysis of Kentucky Flexible Pavement Criterion," November 1968, presented theoretical treatments of current design curves – which enabled transformation of the current curves into companion sets of curves embodying alternative proportions of bituminous concrete and dense-graded aggregate base. We are privileged now to submit additional analytical information and to offer recommendations for revising the present design criterion.

Inelastic design of steel structures to withstand seismic forces requires a knowledge of the behavior of connections when subjected to cyclically reversed loading. This report contains a description of the design and testing of selected steel beam-to-column connection specimens. The motivations for the choice of connection types and overall geometry of the specimens are discussed, relating them to full-size prototypes used in actual building frames. A Theoretical Model For Gas Separation In A Glow Discharge: Cataphoresis, Fredrick H. Shair, Donald S. Remer

A theoretical model for transient and steady-state cataphoresis is developed starting with the macroscopic equations of continuity. After a brief breakdown period, the impurity ions are assumed to be closely coupled with their neutral counterparts. The basic assumptions in the model are that after breakdown, the level of ionization of the impurity, and the axial electric field remain constant; it is demonstrated that under these conditions a system involving rapid ionization-recombination reactions is equivalent to a system in which no reaction occurs, but in which the "effective'' ion mobility is a product of the true ion mobility and the fraction …
