Thermal-Fatigue Of Type 304 Stainless Steel, Gajinder Bir Singh Arora

Masters Theses

"Thermal fatigue resistance of unrestrained samples of type 304 stainless steel has been investigated under different test conditions. The following studies are reported: (a) effects of heating and cooling rates on the initiation of cracks, (b) effects of upper and lower cycle temperatures on the initiation of cracks, (c) effect of water quenching and (d) the manner in which cracks initiated and propagated. It is shown that under cyclic conditions involving maximum temperatures up to 1000°C, the thermal fatigue life of the material decreases rapidly with rise in the maximum temperature of the cycle. The increase in the lower cycle …

These micro-instructions are micro-programmed to provide floating point arithmetic capability and a library of function generating sub-routines"--Abstract, page ii.

The Analysis Of R-S-S-R Spatial Four-Bar Mechanism, David Perng Chyi Jan 1969

The Analysis Of R-S-S-R Spatial Four-Bar Mechanism, David Perng Chyi

Masters Theses

"Although many methods are known for the kinematic analysis of spatial mechanisms, such as descriptive geometry, vector analysis, dual number theory, matrices, screw calculus, and various other methods, a better way to analyze the specific R-S-S-R four-bar mechanism is to use tensor methods in order to eliminate the apparently formidable and tedious tasks of mathematically formulating problems and obtaining solutions. The analysis described in this paper is developed basically by using tensor notations and operations, and the calculations take advantage of the capabilities of modern digital computers. A FORTRAN program for the IBM 360 Data Processing System which will analyze …

Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes Jan 1969

Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes

Masters Theses

"Compared to the problem of combinational network (CN) diagnosis, that of sequential network (SN) diagnosis has been an extremely difficult one. Present techniques of SN diagnosis are difficult to apply, and generally lead to lengthy test schedules or additional logic. This paper presents a new approach to the SN diagnostic problem which results in a substantially simpler technique than those found in the literature. The approach is to modify the SN so that it can be diagnosed from a combinatoric point of view. This is accomplished by the addition of outputs for testing purposes to certain lines in the circuit--no …

The Long Term Effects Of Frequent Cropping, Stanley Thomas Smith Jan 1969

The Long Term Effects Of Frequent Cropping, Stanley Thomas Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

AGRICULTURALLY speaking, few Western Australian soils are more than 50 years old. We have the responsibility of preserving them for farming—not for one man's lifetime, but for centuries.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate that cropping and cultural practices do have some effects on the soil, and that these effects should be considered when choosing a farm rotation.

Microwave Propagation Through Isotropic Inhomogeneous Photoconductive Media, Thomas Van Doren Jan 1969

Microwave Propagation Through Isotropic Inhomogeneous Photoconductive Media, Thomas Van Doren

Doctoral Dissertations

"The electromagnetic field equations for microwave propagation through a rectangular waveguide filled with a lossy, isotropic, linear, inhomogeneous material are derived in matrix form and solved numerically by computer. The theoretical effects of photo-induced conductivity and dielectric constant variations on microwave attenuation, phase shift, and voltage standing wave ratio are plotted for typical examples in the X-band frequency range. The theoretical calculations indicate that a two order-of-magnitude change in the conductivity can produce a 25 db change in the attenuation or a 100 degree change in the angle of the reflection coefficient. The theoretical predictions are verified qualitatively by experiments …

An Aggregate Quality Investigation Of The Meramec River Gravels, Kadri Ercin Kasapoglu Jan 1969

An Aggregate Quality Investigation Of The Meramec River Gravels, Kadri Ercin Kasapoglu

Masters Theses

"This thesis represents a study which was made to evaluate and interpret the downstream variations in the quality of the Meramec River gravels as coarse aggregate for concrete. Since gravel deposits constitute a valuable resource for a region, it is desirable that extent and quality variations of these deposits are known. It was hoped that an evaluation of certain properties of the Meramec River gravels would assist in determining the value of the Meramec River as undeveloped aggregate source by indicating the relative quality of the gravels from alternate sites of the river. For the purpose of this investigation, representative …

A Method For Determining Transient Stability In Power Systems, Charles A. Gross Jan 1969

A Method For Determining Transient Stability In Power Systems, Charles A. Gross

Doctoral Dissertations

"Given a three phase ac power system consisting of synchronous alternators interconnected by transmission lines and other items of electrical transmission equipment, a method is presented which determines the stability of the system when subjected to a three phase symmetrical fault, and to the subsequent clearing of the fault. It is inherent in the method that an estimation of system stability, assuming an instantaneous clearing of the fault, is available. The critical clearing time is therefore determined. The effect of a speed control loop on the system's largest machine is investigated. The method is applied to two, three, four, and …

A Theoretical Study On The Interpretation Of Resistivity Sounding Data Measured By The Wenner Electrode System, Siew Hung Chan Jan 1969

A Theoretical Study On The Interpretation Of Resistivity Sounding Data Measured By The Wenner Electrode System, Siew Hung Chan

Doctoral Dissertations

"This thesis deals with a theoretical study on the interpretation of resistivity sounding data measured by the Wenner electrode system. The objectives of this investigation are twofold: (i) to derive from the apparent resistivity data some suitable functions from which the resistivity and thickness of each member of the sequence of layers composing the earth may be determined, and (ii) to devise suitable methods for analyzing the resulting functions. In this investigation it is shown that the solution of the boundary value problem associated with an n-layered earth model leads to an integral equation for the Wenner electrode system. This …

Analysis Of The Traveling-Wave Transistor, Vernon Ray Stanley Jan 1969

Analysis Of The Traveling-Wave Transistor, Vernon Ray Stanley

Doctoral Dissertations

"Transmission lines containing independent and dependent distributed sources are considered and the transfer matrices of various active distributed lines are derived. A method is discussed by which a lossy line can be made lossless by the appropriate choice of distributed sources. A steady-state analysis of the uniform traveling wave transistor is given. Considering the device as an active four port network, the transfer matrix is found in closed form and the power gain, output voltage, and input impedance are found. A computer program is written and the frequency response is given for various values of line parameters and terminations. Finally, …

Diffusion Of Iron And Cobalt In Nickel Single Crystals, Charles Frederick Heuer Jan 1969

Diffusion Of Iron And Cobalt In Nickel Single Crystals, Charles Frederick Heuer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Diffusion coefficients of iron-59 in nickel have been determined in the temperature range 815°C to 1200°C. The temperature dependence can be represented by an Arrhenius type relationship,...The effect of the isotopic mass on the diffusion coefficient of cobalt in nickel has also been investigated. The isotope effect parameter, E, was found to vary from .26 to .84 over the temperature range 970.5°C to 1200°C. Both results are consistent with the single vacancy mechanism of diffusion. No evidence of divacancy contributions to the mass transport has been found"--Abstract, Page i.

Mass And Heat Transfer Relations In Evaporation Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley, V. V. Tanna, Y. B. Rao, C. L. Yeh Jan 1969

Mass And Heat Transfer Relations In Evaporation Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley, V. V. Tanna, Y. B. Rao, C. L. Yeh

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study concerns rates of evaporation and mass transfer of water vapor from a heated salt solution through a water repellent porous membrane to a cooled water condensate. This transfer is a result of temperature differences and corresponding vapor pressure differences across the membrane. Three groups of experiments were carried out which indicate that the major factor influencing the rates of transfer is diffusion through a stagnant gas in the membrane pores. However, an equation considering film heat transfer coefficients, membrane thermal conductivity, and an empirical correction based on temperature driving force appears to be necessary for representing all the …

Mutually Dependent Heat And Mass Transfer In Laminar Duct Flow, E. M. Sparrow, T. S. Chen Jan 1969

Mutually Dependent Heat And Mass Transfer In Laminar Duct Flow, E. M. Sparrow, T. S. Chen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analysis is performed of the strongly coupled heat and mass transfer processes which result from sublimation of mass from the walls of a duct into a flowing gas, the latent heat being provided solely by convective transfer from the gas. The flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically developed. Results are given for the stream ward variations of the bulk and wall temperatures and mass fractions, of the heat and mass transfer rates, and of the local heat transfer coefficient. Representative temperature and mass fraction profiles are also presented. Entrance lengths characterizing the near approach to fully developed …

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen Jan 1969

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental methods are needed for determining the characteristics of small acoustic filters used in systems with pulsating gas flows. These characteristics could then be used to predict the performance of proposed filter designs in a particular system, according to plane wave acoustic theory. Dependence on trial-and-error experimentation in solving noise control problems would thus be minimized. A literature survey revealed only a few earlier attempts to evaluate the acoustic performance of small filters and filter elements. Three methods for determining reflection and transmission factors are described, evaluated, and compared. A method employing a standing wave tube of unique design is …

Isotope Effect Of Carbon Diffusion In An Fe-Si Alloy, Manfred Wuttig, E. T. Yen Jan 1969

Isotope Effect Of Carbon Diffusion In An Fe-Si Alloy, Manfred Wuttig, E. T. Yen

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The isotope effect of carbon diffusion in dilute iron silicon alloys containing 28Si and 30Si has been measured below room temperature using the Dis accommodation technique. The time dependence of the reluctivity has been analyzed in terms of two relaxation processes which are due to the reorientation of carbon interstitials in Fe-Fe and Fe-Si sites respectively. The ratio of the relaxation times of the two carbon isotopes 13C and 12C τ13/τ12 is 1.037 for the former and 1.007 for the latter process in the Fe+28Si alloy. The ratios of the relaxation times of the same carbon isotope 12C contained in …

Film Boiling Heat Transfer From An Oscillating Sphere, L. G. Rhea, R. G. Nevins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An experimental investigation has been undertaken to determine the effect of oscillation of the heat transfer surface on turbulent film boiling heat transfer. A transient technique was used to calculate the heat flux from copper spheres of 1 in., 3/4 in., and 1/2 in. dia. In all tests, saturated liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure was used as the boiling fluid. The data obtained were found to be in good agreement with published theory at zero frequency. The range of frequencies studied was from zero to approximately 12 cps at peak-to-peak amplitudes of 2 in. and 1 in., i.e., at amplitude-to-diameter …

Water Quality Telemetry, Final Progress Report, Duard S. Woffinden, Allen D. Kartchner Jan 1969

Water Quality Telemetry, Final Progress Report, Duard S. Woffinden, Allen D. Kartchner

Reports

Water quality standards are now part of the legal code set up to control water pollution. In order to ascertain that these standards are being met, it is mandatory to monitor any river system over which control must be maintained. For optimum, usefulness, data on the monitored variables should be available on a real time basis at any time throughout the 24-hour day. Remote sampling stations and a telemetry link represent the most practical means of accomplishing this end. A water quality monitoring system utilizing radio telemetry has been developed at the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL). The system consists …
