Studies Of Rare Earth Compounds, Rostam Mondegarian Mar 1972

Studies Of Rare Earth Compounds, Rostam Mondegarian

Theses

The work reported herein has consisted of miscellaneous studies of rare earth compounds.

  1. The Pr—As system was studied with a view to obtaining a ferromagnetic composition.
  2. Attempts were made to prepare ternary compounds by solid state reaction of PrAs, GdAs or YbAs with MnAs, CrAs or FeAs, and PrP, GdP, or YbP with MnP, CrP or FeP.
  3. Attempts were made to prepare quaternary compounds by solid state reaction of YbAs, YbP and GdAs with CdI2 in various molar ratios. In many cases new compouns appeared to be formed but because of complexity of the X—ray patterns it was not possible …

Digital Video Display System Using Cathode-Ray Tube, George M. Low, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Warren L. Martin, Alexander Engel Mar 1972

Digital Video Display System Using Cathode-Ray Tube, George M. Low, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Warren L. Martin, Alexander Engel

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A digital video display system (DWDS) is disclosed for display of image, alphanumeric and other data on a cathode-ray tube (CRT) with sequential raster scan and two, four or eight gray shades. The DVDS includes a central processing unit for ac tivating the system, selecting the X (horizontal axis) and Z (in tensity modulation) modes, and designating the starting loca tion of two successive rasters of data from a memory accessed by a data multiplexer subsystem (DMS). At the end of each raster, the DMS interrupts the computer for a new starting lo cation of a raster of data to …

Communications Link For Computers, Thomas O. Paine, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, James W. Layland, Warren L. Martin Mar 1972

Communications Link For Computers, Thomas O. Paine, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, James W. Layland, Warren L. Martin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A system is disclosed for a computer to communicate with a selected one of a plurality of other computers through two identical communications links associated with the communicating computers. A single channel connects the two links which operate at a clock rate independent of the computers. Binary digits and clock pulses are combined and converted into a three-level signal for serial transmission over the single channel. Both control messages and data words may be transmitted. Each message and word transmitted is checked for error by the receiving link before it is accepted and the receiving computer is interrupted. If error …

Degradation Of Limestone Aggregate During Construction, Robert C. Deen, Herbert F. Southgate Mar 1972

Degradation Of Limestone Aggregate During Construction, Robert C. Deen, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Twelve construction projects were sampled at the plant, from the spreader box, after spreading, and after compacting. Laboratory tests including gradation analysis, ball-mill wear tests, Atterberg limits, and specific gravity were performed to determine changes in gradations. Kentucky limestones are very hard, high quality aggregates, with no significant degradation characteristics under current construction practices. On a given project, the construction procedure did not cause any significant degradation. Amongst projects, variances can be significant; however, this is attributable to the variation in initial gradations on the different projects.

Bio What?, Tim Brady Mar 1972

Bio What?, Tim Brady

Publications

A study is made of biorhythm charts and aircraft accidents at TAC. In one 3-year span, 1969-1972, covering 59 accidents, 13 of those accidents occurred on a "critical biorhythmic day" and 40% of the total accidents happened when at least one of the pilots involved had two or more biorhythmic cycles in the minus portion. All accidents are preventable and all people are accident preventers. Understanding why accidents happen and that they are sometimes caused by human error is one area that needs continued study to determine how to reduce accidents.

Software Simulation Of The D17b Computer, Bruce Chatterton Mar 1972

Software Simulation Of The D17b Computer, Bruce Chatterton

Theses and Dissertations

A software program has been written which simulates the functions of the Minuteman D17B computer at the register transfer level. The simulation program is written in the FORTRAN Extended language to be used on the Intercom System (teletype) of a CDC 6600 computer system. The simulation program consists of a main program and eight subroutines. A programming language for the D17B simulation was formed which contains numbers and load codes, switches, and miscellaneous commands. Example programs run on the simulated computer have been included to show the types of output available.

Flow Behavior Of Molten Polymer Blends, Kryspin Pawel Maciejewski Feb 1972

Flow Behavior Of Molten Polymer Blends, Kryspin Pawel Maciejewski

Theses

An experimental study of molten polymer blends was made using the Instron Capillary Rheometer. The materials investigated were two phase blends of non-crystalline polymers (poIymethylmethacrystate-low Mw-polyvinylacetate, polyvinylacetate-polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate-low Mw-polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate-high Mw-polystyrene), crystalline polymers (polyethylene-polypropylene) and combinations of non-crystalline-crystalline polymers (polyethylene-polystyrene). Two methods of sample preparation were used, blending of a polymer pair in a molten state by the use of Brabender blender, and a simple manual blending of pellets in desired proportion. The Brabender blended polymer pairs show lower viscosities, this is interpreted molecularly as a result of a reduction of the amount of chain entanglement on shearing of the …

Application Of Numerical Analysis To Root Locus Design Of Feedback Control Systems, Steve William Justice Feb 1972

Application Of Numerical Analysis To Root Locus Design Of Feedback Control Systems, Steve William Justice

Dissertations and Theses

Many practical problems in the field of engineering become so complex that they may be effectively solved only with the aid of a computer. An effective solution depends on the use of an efficient algorithm. Plotting root locus diagrams is such a problem. This thesis presents such an algorithm.

Root locus design of feedback control systems is a very powerful tool. Stability of systems under the influence of variables can be easily determined from the root locus diagram. For even moderately complex systems of the type found in practical applications, determination of the locus is extremely difficult if accuracy is …

A Generalized Elastic Theory Of Fracture, Richard V. Browning Feb 1972

A Generalized Elastic Theory Of Fracture, Richard V. Browning

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A theory of fracture is proposed for brittle and near brittle fracture. The theory includes the Griffith-Irwin theory as a special case. Developed for opening mode loading in plane geometry, the theory is based on a solution for a slit in an infinite elastic plate with an arbitrary relative displacement along the slit. Particular relative displacement functions are chosen and studied in detail by calculating the mean stress, maximum shear stress, maximum tensile stress, and energy density fields as well as the tractions applied on the slit. The particular solutions chosen for examination all exhibit singularities in the stress fields …

Studies Of Bistable Fluid Devices For Particle Flow Control, Gerald H. Hogland Feb 1972

Studies Of Bistable Fluid Devices For Particle Flow Control, Gerald H. Hogland

Dissertations and Theses

This study was directed toward the development of a bistable wall attachment Flip-Flop device which was capable of directionally controlling particle flow. The particles were transported by a fluid stream which under the influence of wall attachment. The dominant criteria in the development of the device was the achievement of the highest recovery of particles at the active output, without destroying the wall attachment of the fluid stream The experiment was conducted in several distinct stages; each of which was concerned with at least one aspect of wa1l attachment or particle flow. Results derived from one test were used to …
