In a meeting held on March 7, 1973, the Division of Research was requested to perform a supplementary slope stability analysis of the unstable, eastern approach embankment and foundation located at the crossing of the Bluegrass Parkway over Chaplin River and extending between Stations 2317+14 and 2321+00. Previously (see referenced report), two remedial schemes had been considered for increasing the stability of the unstable soil mass to an acceptable level. Those included: 1) loading the toe area of the existing, eastern approach slope with a berm, including a sloping berm, and 2) unloading the upper portion of the eastern slope …

A Hydrologic Model Of The Provo River Basin, Utah, Craig T. Jones May 1973

A Hydrologic Model Of The Provo River Basin, Utah, Craig T. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to develop a general hydrologic model for use on a digital computer and prove its validity by applying it to a management study of the Provo River Basin. Hydrologic equations have been proposed for each major hydrologic occurrence within a river basin. By linking these equations through restrictions on continuity of mass, a general hydrologic model can be obtained. Such a model becomes the basic tool for studying the management of the river basin hydrology. The paper describes the model components, parameter identification program, and the river basin management program.

Air Pressures Over Reservoir, Canal, And Water Catchment Surfaces Exposed To Wind, Allen Ray Dedrick May 1973

Air Pressures Over Reservoir, Canal, And Water Catchment Surfaces Exposed To Wind, Allen Ray Dedrick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Surface air pressure differentials that occur over reservoirs, canals, and water-catchment aprons in high-wind conditions were determined by the use of models in a wind tunnel. Such information was needed concerning the magnitude and location of destructive wind forces on water barriers constructed of exposed flexible membrane liners. Rigid models, without a membrane, were used to measure airpressure differentials.

Air-pressure differentials were dependent on geometric configuration and were independent of viccous forces above the critical Reynolds number which was determined experimentally. The geometric factors studied with respect to reservoirs and canals included approach slope, approach slope length, leeward slope, and …

The Formation And Properties Of Machining Burrs, Laroux K. Gillespie May 1973

The Formation And Properties Of Machining Burrs, Laroux K. Gillespie

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The formation of burrs in Machining Operations occurs by three Basic Mechanisms:

1) Lateral Extrusion of material

2) Bending of the chip

3) Tearing of the chip form the workpiece

Each of these mechanisms has been studied analytically and compared to experimental results. The agreement between predictions and measurements has been found to be close.

Drilling, milling, grinding, and turning burrs were produced in 303Se stainless steel and their properties were related to tool geometry, feedrates, and depth of cut. One thousand measurements were made and subsequently analyzed by analysis of variance techniques. The properties measured include burr length and …

State Estimation In Discrete-Time Linear Systems With Quadratic Form Observers, James Parish Shipley Jr. May 1973

State Estimation In Discrete-Time Linear Systems With Quadratic Form Observers, James Parish Shipley Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The problem considered in this dissertation is that of estimating the state of a system with a linear plant equation but having a measurement function which is a quadratic form in the state. It is first demonstrated by constructive proof that the problem has a solution if the controls have large enough magnitude, and some requirements on the minimum size of the control are discussed.

Three algorithms for estimating the state are obtained, one using the technique of maximum likelihood, the other two utilizing a more general Bayesian approach. In addition, a first-order approximate conditional mean filter is included for …

Electrical Parameter Correlations For Radiation Hardness Assurance Of Operational Amplifiers, John L. Mullis May 1973

Electrical Parameter Correlations For Radiation Hardness Assurance Of Operational Amplifiers, John L. Mullis

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In the manufacture of integrated circuits, a considerable amount of attention is given to controlling fabrication processes. This is required if high production yield and consistent quality are to be obtained. In addition to monitoring critical parameters which are influenced by variables in processing, the packaged circuits undergo a variety of tests to determine whether they meet the desired electrical and environmental quality specifications. The problem of quality assurance is accepted and treated as an essential part of the production cycle.

Stability Of A Side-Hill Embankment, Tommy C. Hopkins, Harry F. Girdler, Steve M. Yoder

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The report submitted herein is a case history describing observations and in-depth analyses made at a highway site involving a massive, unstable side-hill embankment located on I-64 in Boyd County. The in-depth study was initiated in January 1973. The I-64 site was selected for study because it contained several design, construction and maintenance features as well as soil types that are typical of many highway embankments in Kentucky. Side-hill fill situations are common design problems and oftentimes have required extensive maintenance after construction. Major objectives of the study were to 1) determine the causes of instability of the I-64 embankment, …

Trajectories Describing The Evolution Of Polarized Light In Homogeneous Anisotropic Media And Liquid Crystals, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara, B. E. Merrill Apr 1973

Trajectories Describing The Evolution Of Polarized Light In Homogeneous Anisotropic Media And Liquid Crystals, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara, B. E. Merrill

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Trajectories are given that describe the evolution of the ellipse of polarization in the complex plane for light propagating in a homogeneous anisotropic medium and along the helical axis of a cholesteric liquid crystal. For the general homogeneous anisotropic medium that exhibits combined birefringence and dichroism the trajectory is a spiral that converges to the low-absorption eigenpolarization. For pure birefringence the trajectory becomes a complete circle that encloses one eigenpolarization, whereas for pure dichroism the trajectory becomes an arc of a circle that ends at the low-absorption eigenstate. The case of a cholesteric (or twisted nematic) liquid crystal leads to …

Transient Convective Heat Transfer In Closed Containers During And After Gas Injection, Jennings Donell Means Apr 1973

Transient Convective Heat Transfer In Closed Containers During And After Gas Injection, Jennings Donell Means

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents experimental data correlations for the spatially - averaged convective heat transfer coefficient for thin walled closed containers during and after gas injection. The different modes of heat transfer were identified, and correlations were made for each. Correlations are presented for the injection period, post-top injection, post-bottom injection, post- tangential, post-radial injection, and post-ejection heat transfer for various tank geometries. Of special significance are the very high heat transfer rates that were shown to be present in some cases immediately after injection. Heat transfer rates were shown to be, for a short period, up to almost two orders …

The Design And Analysis Of An Electro-Pneumatic Signal Converter, Richard K. Thornton Apr 1973

The Design And Analysis Of An Electro-Pneumatic Signal Converter, Richard K. Thornton

Theses and Dissertations

In the field of process control it is desirable to study dynamic characteristics such as frequency response and distortion when determining just how equipment is to be controlled. Pneumatic controllers, transmitters, control valves, etc., all have dynamic behaviors which can be expressed mathematically as transfer functions. Each component plays an important role in determining the entire system behavior. Frequency response is one technique used in developing a component’s transfer function. By driving a device with a sinusoidal signal of fixed amplitude and frequency the output amplitude and phase shift are measured and compared with that of the input. Varying the …

Finite Conductance Element Method Of Conduction Heat Transfer, E. Clark Lemmon Apr 1973

Finite Conductance Element Method Of Conduction Heat Transfer, E. Clark Lemmon

Theses and Dissertations

One of the basic goals in engineering is to formulate models which will provide a means for analytically predicting observed phenomenon. For some time, the partial differential equations describing the steady state and transient conduction of heat within a solid have been available. However, the straight forward use of these equations is often restricted due to the surface geometry of the solid. If the surface geometry is at all irregular, exact solutions will in general not exist. In that case, a solution is sought by some approximate numerical technique. The two techniques most often used are the finite difference method …

An Aerodynamic Investigation Of The Causes Of Overhead Electrical Transmission Line Gallop, Eric Nathan Skousen Apr 1973

An Aerodynamic Investigation Of The Causes Of Overhead Electrical Transmission Line Gallop, Eric Nathan Skousen

Theses and Dissertations

Overhead electrical transmission lines vibrate due to the action of a prevailing wind. These cable vibrations can be classified into two categories— high-frequency and low-frequency. The high-frequency vibrations, "aeolian" vibrations or "singing wires," is a low-amplitude phenomenon. It has been largely controlled with the use of various mechanical dampers [l, 2],

Numerical Study Of The Turbulent Boundary Layer In A Hypersonic Nozzle, Joan Patricia Gosink

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A numerical study of the turbulent boundary layer in a hypersonic nozzle is presented. The boundary layer equations are solved by a second order, implicit finite difference scheme developed at Langley Research Center. The technique is applicable to laminar, transitional or turbulent compressible or incompressible boundary layer flows for planar or axisymmetric geometries. A technique is presented for utilizing experimental data to start the finite difference solution.

Turbulent boundary-layer measurements on axisymmetric nozzle walls at Mach number 6 are presented and compared with numerical predictions obtained by starting the solution in the stagnation chamber and from a downstream experimental station. …

Simulation Of A Single Feed Fractional Distillation Column Using The Thiele-Geddes Procedure, M. S. Abolahrari Feb 1973

Simulation Of A Single Feed Fractional Distillation Column Using The Thiele-Geddes Procedure, M. S. Abolahrari

Theses

This thesis constitutes a simulation model of a single feed frational distillation column consisting of a single phase distillate, liquid or vapor product, an equilibrium stage reboiler, and a cascade consisting of theoretical equilibrium stages. The model limitations in addition to the single feed and the single phase distillate are 20 identifiable components, and 100 theoretical equilibrium stages. The thermodynamic data required are vapor-liquid equilibrium data and vapor-liquid enthalpy data, both assumed to be correlatable as functions of temperature. Compositional dependence of the thermodynamic data is ignored, but minor pressure variations throughout the cascade can be incorporated into the vapor-liquid …

The Chemistry Of Azides, Edward D. Nelson Feb 1973

The Chemistry Of Azides, Edward D. Nelson

Theses

A review of the decomposition of alkyl and aryl azides by thermolysis and photolysis has been accomplished. Organic azides are a very distinct species that undergo its own unique reactions. Azides decompose to form an electron deficient nitrogen having a sextet of elcctrons. This is called a Nitrene. Nitrenes can exist in the singlet or triplet state. The triplet behaves like a diradical. General and specific reactions of nitrenes have been shown with detailed mechanisms accounting for the products. The main modes of nitrene stabilization are rearrangement, hydrogen abstraction and insertion. Insertion is characteristic of singlet species and abstraction characteristic …

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

The EMISARI System described in this paper represents a major departure from conventional MIS design. It is oriented not toward data per se, but rather toward activities of the people who generate and use the data. Thus it provides not merely for reporting up the chain of command, but also for dissemination of policy guidance and reference material down the chain, and for lateral communication among all users. It places a premium upon flexibility, to permit rapid system modifications in response to changes in user functions and needs and it offers a greatly simplified operation, to avoid any necessity for …
