Steady State And Dynamic Performance Of Anisotropic Reluctance Motor, S. Chandrasekhara Rao May 1974

Steady State And Dynamic Performance Of Anisotropic Reluctance Motor, S. Chandrasekhara Rao

Theses

The paper deals with a special type of reluctance motor called Anisotropic rotor reluctance motor. As the name implies, advantage is taken of the internal anisotropy of the rotor magnetic structure. Axially laminated grain oriented silicon steel is used in the rotor. This unconventional configuration of assembly of rotor laminations results in a high ratio of direct axis to quadrature axis reluctance. Compared to the conventional reluctance motor, pull out torque of more than three times and a power factor as high as in an induction motor is obtained. Several motors of ratings up to 60 HP. were built and …

The Digital Multifunction Power Measuring System, Ralph Warren Shoemaker May 1974

The Digital Multifunction Power Measuring System, Ralph Warren Shoemaker

Dissertations and Theses

The Digital Multifunction Power Measuring System is the outgrowth of a project involving the design of a prototype precision Digital Watt Transducer for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). A prototype Digital Watt Transducer was built and tested since no other device of the desired accuracy was commercially available. Upon partial completion of the project, another Watt Transducer did become available which was essentially identical to our development. Since we could not economically compete with the manufacturer of these Watt Transducers, our project was stopped. Over a period of several months we thought about other ways to apply the experience gained …

Use Of A Micro-Computer In A Missile Simulator, James A. Rose, James V. Leonard, Herbert A. Crosby

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In 1971 McDonnell-Douglas was awarded a contract for a new missile system. The missile power, discrete command/ response, and digital systems were described with emphasis on the digital data format, error detection and timing. A missile simulator, the S/TS, was briefly described showing how the shortcomings of a previous simulator were eliminated. A listing of the S/TS design criteria was given, and the design logic based on utilization of a micro-computer was described.

Asynchronous Logic Design With Flip-Flop Constraints, David Franklin Cox May 1974

Asynchronous Logic Design With Flip-Flop Constraints, David Franklin Cox

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Some techniques are presented to permit the implementation of asynchronous sequential circuits using standard flip-flops. An algorithm is presented for the RS flip-flop, and it is shown that any flow table may be realized using the algorithm (the flow table is assumed to be realizable using standard logic gates). The approach is shown to be directly applicable to synchronous circuits, and transition flip-flops (JK, D, and T) are analyzed using the ideas developed. Constraints are derived for the flow tables to meet to be realizable using transition flip-flops in asynchronous situations, and upper and lower bounds on the number of …

"Before" Evaluation Of Economic Growth Center Developmental Highway (Us 25e: Corbin-Barbourville), Joseph T. Farmer, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Before-and-after impact studies were selected as the means of determining the effect of reconstructing a 4.886 mile (7.862 kilometer) section of US 25E between Corbin and Barbourville. A comprehensive analysis of the "before" statistics revealed the area designated as a potential growth center suffered from social and economic mediocrity. Many characteristics considered essential for economic prosperity are lacking. Per capita income and educational achievement levels are lower than statewide averages. Transportation is dependent upon highways and many existing routes provide a very low level of service.

On the other hand, the area has adequate industrial and recreational potential to insure …

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer May 1974

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The initial goal was to devise an engineering classification system for intact rock samples based on simple index tests which could be used to categorize Kentucky surface and near-surface rock types and assist Kentucky Department of Transportation personnel in planning for transportation facilities. While conducting the literature survey, several facts become apparent:

  1. a large number of rock classification systems, geologic and technical, general and specific, already existed;
  2. an equally large number of index tests had been devised; and
  3. there was a lack of communication among those involved in specialized areas of rock-related work (geologists, civil engineers, mining engineers, etc.), and, …

Operational Characteristics Of Lane Drops, Don L. Cornette, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens May 1974

Operational Characteristics Of Lane Drops, Don L. Cornette, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Traffic behavior studies were conducted at seven lane-drop locations, representing three lane-drop classes. These studies consisted of conflict observations (that is, erratic movements and brakelight applications), spot-speed observations, and lane volume counts. Such a study was made before and after each different traffic control device installation in an attempt to determine which device was the most effective in minimizing conflicts at existing lane drops. A study of conflict deviations indicates that no single type of traffic control device studied was significantly effective in reducing erratic movement and brakelight rates at all seven lane-drop locations. Rather, it appears that different traffic …

Interactive Hybrid Computer Program As An Aid For Teaching Hydrology, Arif Hikmet Atali May 1974

Interactive Hybrid Computer Program As An Aid For Teaching Hydrology, Arif Hikmet Atali

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The science of water resource planning and management implies the utilization of available water supplies in order to meet specific goals and objectives (Hill and Riley, 1972). Essential to effective planning and management is the consideration and analysis of all possible alternatives. Past research at Utah State University has demonstrated that the hybrid computer simulation of hydrologic processes is a reliable planning technique which provides the capability to examine many possible alternatives in a short period of time (Hill et al., 1970; Riley, 1970; and Riley et al., 1967). This technique, because of its interactive characteristics, is valuable also in …

Finite Difference Solution For Drainage Of Heterogeneous Sloping Lands, Fahd Salih Natur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The two-dimensional problem of tile drainage on sloping heterogeneous lands was considered. The land surface and the impermeable boundaries of the problem were of a general shape. The flow in both the saturated and unsaturated zones was considered and the system was treated as one composite system. The problem was solved by a finite difference numerical method using the successive over-relaxation iterative (SOR) method for the steady state case with no local recharge, and a combined Newton inner iteration and successive over- relaxation outer iteration for the transient state case with local recharge. Both the rising water table and the …

An Optimal Tracking System For Numerically Controlled Machine Tools, Stephen H. Neff May 1974

An Optimal Tracking System For Numerically Controlled Machine Tools, Stephen H. Neff

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Conventional numerically controlled machine tools use straight line approximations for machining contoured surfaces or outlines. This thesis uses modern control theory to develop an optimal tracking system which will follow any surface defined by a second degree polynomial without resort to straight line approximation. To develop the optimal tracking system, the mathematical expressions required to define the dynamics of a two axis machine tool following a parabolic path are formulated. Next, the third order differential equation representing the slide, driven by a hydraulic motor which is controlled by an electrohydraulic servovalve, is changed into a first order matrix differential equation, …

The sensor basically consists of a vortex chamber and a sink tube. The vortex chamber consists of two circular coaxial disks held apart, at their periphery, by a porous coupling. One circular disk has an opening to permit the mounting of the sink tube, in such a manner that the vortex chamber as well as the sink tube have a common axis of rotation.

Air was supplied radially …

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr. May 1974

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In-stream concrete structures were studied through model tests and river tests. The model studies indicated that four designs provided good habitat in the model stream. These structures were the inverted weir, the "V" structure, the slab with legs and the cylinder. Through the river studies it was determined that these structures did not influence enough of the total river area to be effective in providing good fish habitat. Also an appreciable amount of yearly maintenance would be required to free the structures from silting in, debris, and vandalism. The slab with legs was the only promising structure.

Prospects For Conversion Of Solar Energy Into Electrical Power, William R. Cherry Apr 1974

Prospects For Conversion Of Solar Energy Into Electrical Power, William R. Cherry

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In 1972, the Solar Energy Panel took a broad look at solar energy across the whole field to see just what could be done with this energy source. Maybe the era of acquiring energy without regard to cost and without regard to consequences of using it is beginning to come to a close and maybe we ought to start looking at the newer sources of energy, even though we need every bit of energy we can get from every source. I am not trying to say we don't need gas, oil, coal and nuclear energy. We are not going to …

The U. S. Wind Power Program, Joseph M. Savino Apr 1974

The U. S. Wind Power Program, Joseph M. Savino

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Today I would like to talk about wind energy in, basically, two parts. I would like to bring to your attention some of the developments that have occurred in the 20th century. Many of us who have gone through school in the last 25-30 years don't recall anywhere in our engineering education much information dealing with wind energy, and that may come as a surprise to you as it did to me, to learn how much has actually been done in the 20th century to develop large scale wind-driven machines. After I get through with that introduction I would like …

Alternate Energy Removal Modes For Nuclear Power Reactors, Robert L. Carter Apr 1974

Alternate Energy Removal Modes For Nuclear Power Reactors, Robert L. Carter

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Attention is focussed upon the unique qualities of high energy fission particles, and upon the fundamental limits to the direct removal of their kinetic energy by electrostatic means and by cyclotron resonance deceleration. Efficiencies of secondary and tertiary product ionization and excitation produced by fission particles are examined. The potential for delivery of power through various non-thermal modes is discussed, and the significant unknowns relating thereto are identified.

Locating Nuclear Power Plants Underground, Frank M. Scott Apr 1974

Locating Nuclear Power Plants Underground, Frank M. Scott

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper reviews some of the questions that have been asked by experts and others as to why nuclear power plants are not located or placed underground. While the safeguards and present designs make such installations unnecessary, there are some definite advantages that warrant the additional cost involved. First of all, such an arrangement does satisfy the psychological concern of a number of people and, in so doing, might gain the acceptance of the public so that such plants could be constructed in urban areas of load centers. The results of these studies are presented and some of the requirements …

Are Nuclear Shipments Really Safe?, William A. Brobst Apr 1974

Are Nuclear Shipments Really Safe?, William A. Brobst

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The transportation of nuclear materials is on the increase. Although nuclear shipments are only a very small fraction of the Nation’s hazardous materials shipments, they attract a great deal of public attention. Shipments of spent nuclear fuel and nuclear wastes are a particular concern.

One of the many fears that people have about nuclear energy is the possibility that a nuclear shipment might somehow go awry and cause a serious public hazard. Primarily, they are worried that a shipment of spent reactor fuel or highly radioactive waste could be involved in a serious rail or highway accident and dump its …

The Energy Problem -- Crude Oil, J. A. Marshall

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper discusses the national energy problem as it affects the demand for and availability of crude oil. Forecasts of energy demands to 1990 have been made based on population trends and changing life styles in the USA. Projections of energy supplies show a rapidly increasing gap between supply of crude oil and demand for crude oil from the early 1970's through 1990. The need for imported crude oil to supply the forecast deficit is discussed. The political and economic implications of these imports are also discussed. The need for refineries, port facilities, tankers, and pipelines are presented. Finally, recommendations …

An auxiliary electric heating coil is built into the solar heating system for use in any extended period of cloudy and inclement weather. The system is so designed as to satisfy the two key requirements for any successful solar …

The Role Of Natural Gas And Lng In Supplying Our Energy Needs, D. L. Caldwell Apr 1974

The Role Of Natural Gas And Lng In Supplying Our Energy Needs, D. L. Caldwell

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The domestic natural gas industry experienced a spectacular growth during the two decades from 1950 to 1970. Demand for gas continues to rise and production has peaked at a time when the price for other energy sources is escalating. A price increase can stimulate production over the short term. Massive LNG imports can help the intermediate term supply. The long term natural gas situation is bleak and substitute natural gas sources must be employed. A conservation program and reordering of priorities for energy sources is essential for the United States as well as most industrial nations.

Energy From Biochemical Sources, G. J. Fennewald, D. L. Million, Efton Park, J. L. Gaddy

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

As available energy reserves decline, renewable sources must be utilized. Organic matter, grown agriculturally, represents a renewable energy source, which is readily available. This paper reviews the methods by which organic matter can be converted to energy sources by biochemical processes. The economics of conversion of agricultural crops and byproducts to alcohols by fermentation and conversion of these agricultural materials to methane by anaerobic digestion are examined. Projections of the potential of this energy source are quite promising.
