Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium At Low Pressures : Correlation Of Binary And Prediction Of Multicomponent Data, Norman I. Silverman May 1977

Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium At Low Pressures : Correlation Of Binary And Prediction Of Multicomponent Data, Norman I. Silverman

Theses

The Wilson equation is chosen as typical of the new correlations for activity coefficients gaining wide distribution for use in the correlation and prediction of vapor-liquid equilibria today. Vapor liquid equilibrium data for 247 binary systems have been regressed against each of ten (10) objective functions and values of the Wilson energy parameters obtained. For the typical binary system, a wide variation of the Wilson energy parameters are observed when different objective functions are used with the given set of binary data. These are each examined with respect to their capability to correlate multicomponent vapor-liquid equilibrium data for seventy-three (73) …

An Approach To Energy Conservation In A Manufacturing Industry, William Polignano May 1977

An Approach To Energy Conservation In A Manufacturing Industry, William Polignano

Theses

The approach attacks the problem of control and planning of energy usage via three major categories. These areas are: detection, forecasting and reporting of energy usage.

To initiate any energy program the first step, is the identification of the areas that use the most energy, thus allowing detailed studies to be concentrated in these energy-intensive areas. The author has attempted to show which areas are energy-intensive in his employer's plants.

The second step is the accurate forecasting of energy usage. The author has attempted this via an econometric forecasting model that accurately predicts energy usage based on direct labor hours …

Point Of Operation Safeguarding - A Metal Forming System Approach, William Baker Eaton May 1977

Point Of Operation Safeguarding - A Metal Forming System Approach, William Baker Eaton

Theses

The mechanical power press in its application in the metal stamping and forming industry has been misinterpreted as a selfcontained metal forming system. Examination of the production routines involving the press show that this machine is actually only one elemental component of the metal forming system and not the total production unit.

Authoritative codes and standards pertinent to the mechanical power press have reflected this misinterpretation by not including system considerations in their contents. These omissions have resulted in the providing of safeguards which do not properly reflect the particular characteristics of the metal forming system to which they are …

The Guarding Of The Principal Metalworking Machines : The Techniques, Need, And Responsibility, Peter James Schwalje May 1977

The Guarding Of The Principal Metalworking Machines : The Techniques, Need, And Responsibility, Peter James Schwalje

Theses

This thesis examines the guarding of the principal metalworking machines employed in the economy. The machines selected for consideration comprise the bulk of metal processing equipment utilized in the basic fabrication and manufacturing processes. It has been intuitively recognized that this equipment has been involved in a significant quantity of industrial accidents by the very nature of the hazards created by their normal use. Consequently, a need to develop some form of guarding or means of operator protection is called for.

In order to examine this question the principal metalworking machines are enumerated, their basic operating characteristics set forth,, and …

Growth Patterns Of Bacteria In Pressurized Sewage, Dennis Mazzei May 1977

Growth Patterns Of Bacteria In Pressurized Sewage, Dennis Mazzei

Theses

Primary sewage was pressurized at 100 psi for one hour. The effects of this pressure on the growth patterns of general and nitrifying bacteria were examined daily for eighteen consecutive days using Standard Plate Counts and Most Probable Number (MPN) estimates. In conjunction with these tests, the degree of biodegradability was also determined by measuring both daily biochemical oxygen demands (BOD's) and dissolved oxygen levels.

Graphical analysis of experimental data compare the BOD's exterted [sic] by microorganisms to their respective numbers of colonies as determined by plate counts of both pressurized and non-pressurized sanitary sewage diluted to 3. 00%. The …

Sparsity And Decoupling In Load Power Flow Analysis, Kenneth Nazimek

Theses

This paper presents some recent ideas on and methods created by power engineers for the solution of the Load Flow Problem. Beginning with an analysis of the solution of large systems of linear equations, techniques employing elementary matrix operations are discussed to reduce the amount of calculations necessary to achieve repeated solutions. Recent interest in taking advantage of the characteristic sparsity of the admittance matrix is also examined. The problems of operating on and computer storage of large sparse matrices are investigated. Methods to efficiently order, store and work with large sparse matrices are discussed and demonstrated. The general acceptance …

Thermal Decomposition Products Of Kynol And Nomex With Reference To Structure And Toxicity, Shaker H. El-Sherbini May 1977

Thermal Decomposition Products Of Kynol And Nomex With Reference To Structure And Toxicity, Shaker H. El-Sherbini

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to study the combustion products of KYNOL and NOMEX as a fire retardant fibers. From the quantitative analysis data of the combustion products, the polymer structure is discussed and the property of thermal stability is explained.

From the analysis of the combustion products, the toxicity indices for the two fibers are determined. It is found to be 0.1 for KYNOL and 0.71 for NOMEX. This can be interpreted to mean that, if one gram of MIDI, is decomposed and the combustion products were diffused in one cubic meter of air, the probability of dying …

The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien May 1977

The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien

Theses

The cause and the nature of anisotropy in a cohesive soil was investigated by direct shear and triaxial compression tests. Laboratory techniques and procedures used to prepare isotropic clay samples are given where consolidation was accomplished under hydrostatic pressure. Direct shear tests were performed on these specimens trimmed at different inclinations to the physical horizontal from the block samples. The ratio of undrained shear strengths in any direction to shear strength in the vertical direction was found to be equal to one, proving isotropy existed. Similar tests were performed on specimens trimmed from the same clay consolidated one-dimensionally. Results from …

Dynamics Of The Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System, Joseph P. Hartmann May 1977

Dynamics Of The Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System, Joseph P. Hartmann

Theses

A computer model for the Dynamics of the Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System has been developed for a 17.5 kg canine using the Continuous Systems Modeling Program (CSMP) for the 360 Computer System. The major body components controlling the glucose dynamics (liver, pancreas, body muscle, blood flow, and body fluid compartments) have been modeled in terms of either their production, absorption, or transport of glucose, and the concentration levels of both the hormones and substrates perfusing the body component. A set of mneumonics has also been developed to label the hundreds of constant and variable terms required to describe a complex system of …

An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky May 1977

An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky

Theses

An experimental study of gas parametric pumping is presented which examines the purification of helium using silica gel to remove the impurity carbon dioxide. Low gas flow rates are used to allow adequate time for equilibrium to be approached, assuming intraparticle diffusion is the controlling mass transfer step. By varying the cycle time, at long cycle times, the effect of penetration length (a function of dynamic capacity) is indicated. Also, at low cycle time, the effects during pressure changes become more significant.

Using low flow rate improves separation effectiveness if evaluated at equal dynamic capacity. When using low flow rate …

Effective Equation Of State Measurements On Uranium Dioxide, Kenneth Orvis Reil May 1977

Effective Equation Of State Measurements On Uranium Dioxide, Kenneth Orvis Reil

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The safety analysis of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) systems requires knowledge of the vapor pressure of reactor fuels up to 6000 K. A new technique was developed to obtain experimental vapor pressure data for reactor fuel materials at high temperatures and pressures. Fuel samples are pulse fission heated in the Annular Core Pulse Reactor (ACPR) at heating rates comparable to those anticipated during a severe LMFBR transient. The vapor of reactor fuels may contain several dissociated fuel species, volatile fission products, and/or fission gas. The evolution of that pressure may be time or rate dependent. For these reasons, …

The Deconvolution Analysis Of The Radiohippurate Renogram, Conrad Robert Appledorn Jr. May 1977

The Deconvolution Analysis Of The Radiohippurate Renogram, Conrad Robert Appledorn Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The evaluation of kidney function is a necessary procedure in assessing the extent of renal disease in today's population. In particular, this assessment should include measurements of the patient's plasma flow into and urine flow from each kidney. Changes in either measurement from accepted normal ranges indicate the presence of a disease process.

The combination of radioactive tracer methods with data analysis using models describing biological kinetics has demonstrated the potential of large computers in the assessment of renal function. However, the requirement for sophi􀂵ticated computer resources has limited the widespread application these techniques might otherwise receive. This work investigates …

Investigation Of Evaporation From Grooved Inverted Meniscus Heat Pipe Wicks, Richard Clarke Oliver May 1977

Investigation Of Evaporation From Grooved Inverted Meniscus Heat Pipe Wicks, Richard Clarke Oliver

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The heat transfer process for a special class of wick fed grooved heat pipe evaporators was investigated analytically and experimentally. The heat pipes studied had vapor release slots cut through the evaporator wick to enhance removal of the vapor generated in the evaporator. As a result of the slots, the liquid menisci formed between the groove tips and the transport wick rather than at the base of the grooves as normally observed. This type of heat pipe evaporator is referred to as an inverted meniscus design.

A comprehensive survey of the literature was completed to establish the existing state of …

Laser Damage In Semiconductors, Surender Kumar Gulati May 1977

Laser Damage In Semiconductors, Surender Kumar Gulati

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Experimental damage thresholds for Si, Ge, GaAs, GaAsxP1-x and GaP have been determined at 10.6 µm and 1.06 µm laser wavelengths. For CW CO2 laser damage, all the thresholds are of the order of a few kW/cm2 for an irradiation time of about 0.10 second. At 1.06 µm wavelength and for nanosecond pulses, the damage thresholds are of the order of 109 W/cm2. The damage thresholds can be explained by assuming that the anomalous absorption takes place through the parametric instability of the type formulated by DuBois and Goldman. The plasma concentration required for …

Lower Bounds To Colunm And Plate Buckling Loads, Pen-Yuan Shih May 1977

Lower Bounds To Colunm And Plate Buckling Loads, Pen-Yuan Shih

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The complexity inherent in the theory of elastic stability has resulted in the extensive use of approximate techniques for determining buckling loads. The Rayleigh quotient provides reasonable answers for a surprisingly broad category of problems. However, the quotient is an upper bound to the buckling load and for certain engineering structures, further it is difficult to estimate the error. A rigorous and conservative analysis requires that a lower bound be computed.

There are several techniques for finding lower bounds to eigenvalues but because of various complicating factors none is routinely used for elastic stability analyses. The purpose of this dissertation …

Effectiveness Of Green-Extension Systems At High-Speed Intersections, Charles V. Zegeer May 1977

Effectiveness Of Green-Extension Systems At High-Speed Intersections, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of green-extension systems (GES) for reducing the dilemma-zone problem associated with the amber phase of traffic signals at high-speed intersections. Reactions of 2,100 drivers were noted during the amber phase at nine intersections, and the dilemma-zone distances with respect to the stop bar were determined.

Before-and-after studies made at three green-extension sites showed a 54-percent reduction in total accidents and a 75-percent reduction in rear-end accidents after GES installation. Accident severity was unaffected.

Conflict, volume, delay, and speed data were taken before and after GES installation at two sites. A …

Traffic Accidents: Day Vs. Night, Donald R. Herd, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A comparison of accidents during daylight and darkness was made for both rural and urban roads. Accident rates on all types of rural roads were higher during darkness than during daylight. Critical accident rates during darkness for various types of roads were calculated. In urban areas, a larger percentage of accidents occurred on wet pavements during darkness than during daylight, but there were no significant differences for rural roads. No significant difference was found between average speeds during conditions of daylight and darkness. On rural roads, imposition of the 55-mph (24.6-m/s) speed limit resulted in a reduction in accident rates …

A Study Of Geologic Hazards And Geotechnical Input For Selected Critical Facilities - Cache Valley, Utah, Kenneth Robert Green

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Important public facilities located in Cache Valley, Utah, were studied to assess their exposure to geologic hazards. Also, the level of geotechnical and geologic expertise involved in the siting, design, and construction of critical public facilities was studied. A discussion of several individual facilities, that were exposed to some degree of hazard, was presented to illustrate the nature of the problem.

Earthquake hazards probably constitute the greatest threat to facilities and to the general welfare of the public. Many earthquake hazard mitigation measures were discussed and recommendations were made, based on aseismic design criteria which has been developed for seismically …

Salt Production From Micro-Channels In The Price River Basin, Utah, Richard Bruce White May 1977

Salt Production From Micro-Channels In The Price River Basin, Utah, Richard Bruce White

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Salt production from micro-channels in the Price River basin of east-central Utah was studied using artificial inputs in order to better define the general sources and processes involved in diffuse source salt release within the basin. An attempt was made to determine what factors are most significant in relation to salt release. The study revealed that the micro-channel systems are highly heterogeneous in relation to salinity. This natural variability tends to increase as the salt content of the channel increases.

The Bluegate member of the Mancos shale was found to be the prime source of salt within the basin. Gypsum …

Dynamic Analysis Of Structures With Solid-Fluid Interaction, Rennee Ramona Pedrido Apr 1977

Dynamic Analysis Of Structures With Solid-Fluid Interaction, Rennee Ramona Pedrido

Dissertations

Interaction between solid and fluid has been recognized to be an important factor in the areas of aeroelasticity, hydroelasticity, and the study of flow-induced vibration in nuclear reactor components. This study develops a finite element model for interaction between an elastic solid and a fluid medium. Plane triangular finite elements have been used separately for fluid, solid, and solid-fluid continua and the equivalent mass, damping, and stiffness matrices and interaction load arrays for all elements are derived and assembled into global matrices. The global matrix differential equation of motion developed is solved in time to obtain the pressure and velocity …

The Effects Of Pressure On The Biodegradability Of Sanitary Sewage In A Model Activated Sludge Reactor, Nicholas A. Mezei

Theses

Based on existing information concerning the effects of pressure on the biodegradability of sanitary sewage, a model activated sludge reactor was used in conjunction with pressurization to determine the viability of pressurization as a primary sewage treatment process.

Municipal sewage samples were pressurized at 40 psig for one hour with an excess of oxygen. An air compressor and a steel drum were used for sample pressurization. A non-pressurized control sample was maintained. After pressurization, the samples were fed into separate model activated sludge reactors. Biodegradability of both types of effluent was measured by determining their five day biochemical oxygen demands …
