Single-Element Rotating-Polarizer Ellipsometer For Film-Substrate Systems, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam Sep 1977

Single-Element Rotating-Polarizer Ellipsometer For Film-Substrate Systems, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel and very simple ellipsometer for the characterization of film-substrate systems that employs one rotating optical element (a polarizer) is proposed. The ellipsometer is based on detecting the angles of incidence at which a film-substrate system has equal amplitude attenuations for light polarized parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) to the plane of incidence. At a certain wavelength, the film thickness of the filmsubstrate system has to lie within permissible-thickness bands (PTB) for the technique to apply.

An Investigation Of Low Cylinder-Strengths (District 6), Assaf S. Rahal Aug 1977

An Investigation Of Low Cylinder-Strengths (District 6), Assaf S. Rahal

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

District 6 has had a lingering problem of low cylinder-strengths. This report describes, in detail, an ensuing investigation which incorporated the use of identical materials of concretes used in District 6 and analyses of cylinder data, in situ concrete cores, and laboratory mixtures. The investigation revealed that a high percent of the in situ concrete is sound and reliable, and that aggregate type and (or) air content were not the cause for the low cylinder-strengths. The quality of making, storing, and curing the cylinders were the reasons for low-strength.

Evaluation Of Urban Intersections Using Traffic Conflict Measures, Mike E. Clayton

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this report was to analyze two urban intersections using conflict data, erratic maneuver data, and near-miss accident data and to recommend site improvements, if necessary. The two intersections selected were Euclid Avenue at Woodland Avenue and New Circle Road at Woodhill Drive in Lexington. Data were taken using 11-hour observation periods.

Proposed improvements for the site on Euclid Avenue included adding dual left-tum lanes and three-phase signals or an extended multi-turn lane. At the New Circle site, a longer, more gradual right-turn lane and repositioning some of the signing are recommended. The conflict data recorded were found …

Error Codes In Digital Data Communication Systems, Robert Hadley Cravens Jul 1977

Error Codes In Digital Data Communication Systems, Robert Hadley Cravens

Dissertations and Theses

Today’s digital communication systems perform data transfers at the rate of millions of bits per minute, with data errors in the order of 1/6th error per day. This magnitude of errorless communication is now possible because of sophisticated error correcting codes. Many types of error codes are employed today in three distinct areas of digital data communication: human to computer; data source to computer; computer to computer; and intra-computer; we are concerned here with intra-computer communication.

This research is primarily a mathematical study of error codes in general to explore the possibilities of each major type for the purpose of …

Study Of A Thin Wire Monopole Antenna Mounted On A Finite Cone, Fwu-Jih Hsu Jul 1977

Study Of A Thin Wire Monopole Antenna Mounted On A Finite Cone, Fwu-Jih Hsu

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Theoretical and numerical considerations of the boundary value problem involving radiation from a monopole thin wire antenna mounted on a finite cone are investigated. The problem is handled in a generalized format using Green's dyadic functions which are appropriate to the geometry of the system. The methodology of handling numerical sets of integer order, as well as real order, orthonormal eigenfunctions is developed with particular emphasis on the rapid convergence in order to be acceptable with available computer facilities. The truncation error involved in such problems is checked by observing the continuity conditions, and a parametric study then follows. Agreement …

Separation Of Organic Solutions By The Indirect Fractional Solidification Process With In-Situ Washing And Melting Operations, Juiuun-Perng Chiang

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The main objective of the present thesis study is to experimentally investigate the feasibility of purifying both dilute and concentrated organic solutions by the indirect freezing process with in-situ washing and melting operations under industrially practicable operating conditions. The smooth deposit approach and the dendritic deposit approach are respectively used in separating dilute solutions and concentrated solutions and small ΔT's for heat transfer, less than 3 °C, have been used throughout the study.

A convenient ultrasonic device and easily practicable operating procedures for nucleating slightly super-cooled liquids have been developed. Several freezermelter systems incorporating the new ultrasonic devices have been …

Limit Design Of Unbraced Reinforced Concrete Frames, Thomas Joseph Gavin Jul 1977

Limit Design Of Unbraced Reinforced Concrete Frames, Thomas Joseph Gavin

Dissertations and Theses

The main objective of this study was to determine whether Limit Design could be applied to low-rise unbraced concrete frames. The investigation was carried out both analytically and experimentally.

In the analytical part, two mathematical models were used to determine the behavior of unbraced frames. The first method used a nonlinear computer program, which takes into account the material and geometric nonlinearities of concrete frames. Several cases of frames with different reinforcement ratios and under different beam to column load ratios were investigated. For each frame the gravity loads were increased proportionately to 3/4 of the ultimate frame capacity. Then, …

Statewide Survey Of Skid Resistances Of Pavements (1976), James L. Burchett, William M. Sampson, Larry A. Warren, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Statewide survey of skid resistance continued in 1976 with testing of rural, major, collector roads (1985 Functional Classification). This included 5,074 miles (8,166 km) of state secondary roads and 788 miles (1,268 km) of rural secondary roads. About 17 percent of the secondary mileage and about 15 percent of the rural secondary mileage surveyed in 1976 may be considered slippery. A small percentage of both secondary (5.3 percent) and rural secondary (5.8 percent) roads had an average skid number below 26. These sections, in particular, should be flagged for deslicking.

Through 1976, 50 percent of the mileage of rural, state-maintained …

A Comparison Of The Properties And Strengths Of Adhesives, Merwin Foster Jul 1977

A Comparison Of The Properties And Strengths Of Adhesives, Merwin Foster

Graduate Research Papers

This investigator teaches a course in junior high industrial arts in which students are exposed to a number of different adhesives. The text used in the industrial arts course classifies the types of adhesives and gives the procedure for using each one, but does not identify the properties of the adhesive or the safety knowledge essential for using them. The several kinds of adhesives used in this course have special properties which determine how and when to use them. To supplement the text and to provide more hands-on activity, a unit could be developed which would help students determine why …

Runoff And Erosion Characteristics Of Surface-Mined Sites In Western North Dakota, John E. Gilley, G. W. Gee, A. Bauer, W. O. Willis, R. A. Young Jul 1977

Runoff And Erosion Characteristics Of Surface-Mined Sites In Western North Dakota, John E. Gilley, G. W. Gee, A. Bauer, W. O. Willis, R. A. Young

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A rainfall simulator was used to measure runoff and erosion from rangeland, spoil and topsoil sites. Measured soil losses were greatest on bare topsoil plots and least on the non-cultivated rangeland site. Application of a straw mulch reduced erosion on topsoil by over 90 percent. However, the meausred erosion and runoff values from the mulched topsoil sites were still over 50 percent higher than from the rangeland site.

Static Temperature Measurements In Supersonic Flow Using Lasar Raman Spectroscopy, Paul A. Nystrom Jul 1977

Static Temperature Measurements In Supersonic Flow Using Lasar Raman Spectroscopy, Paul A. Nystrom

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Laser Raman spectroscopy is a nonintrusive technique which can generate mean static temperature (MST) data within flow fields. By ratioing two simultaneously gathered portions of the Raman scattered spectrum, absolute intensity measurements were not needed. This method was applied to a supersonic cold air jet, where the NST ranged from 160'K to 300'K. Accurate measurements were not realized due to the presence of flow contaminates, especially water vapor.

Optimal Control Of A Large Space Telescope Using An Annular Momentum Control Device, Arun Anant Nadkarni Jul 1977

Optimal Control Of A Large Space Telescope Using An Annular Momentum Control Device, Arun Anant Nadkarni

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Application of a new development in the field of momentum storage devices, the Annular Momentum Control Device (AMCD), to the twin problems of large angle maneuvers and fine pointing control is considered. The basic concept of the AMCD consists of a spinning rim, with no central hub area, suspended by a minimum of three magnetic bearings, and driven by a noncontacting electromagnetic spin motor. The dissertation considers in detail the design of an optimal controller to achieve both large angle maneuvers and the fine pointing control of a Large Telescope (LST) with a single configuration, consisting of a single AMCD …

A Fast Boundary Tracking Alogorithm For Constrained Nonlinear Mathematical Programming Problems, Jacob Yaghoub Moradi Jun 1977

A Fast Boundary Tracking Alogorithm For Constrained Nonlinear Mathematical Programming Problems, Jacob Yaghoub Moradi

Dissertations

A fast search algorithm for the solution of nonlinear mathematical programming optimization problems is presented in this thesis. A gradient search procedure is combined with a "Boundary Tracking"(BT) method using the feasible direction finding method of Zoutendijk for generating a feasible starting direction along the feasible-infeasible boundary.

The algorithm is applied to the minimum weight design of submersible, circular, cylindrical shells reinforced by equally spaced "T" type frames. This problem had produced algorithm failure in two earlier studies and was only recently solved by the Direct Search-Feasible Direction Algorithm (DSFD) which was shown by recent comparison studies to be among …

It should be noted that only 10% of the included data has been verified, i.e. has been checked against the source document. A bounds check was performed by the computer on each piece of data for upper and lower limits established for each type of data. Any potential user of these data should be aware of this fact and that, on the average, 1 piece of data out of 200 may be in error. …

The Separation Of Proteins Via Parametric Pumping And Ion Exchange, Paul Albert Falcon Jun 1977

The Separation Of Proteins Via Parametric Pumping And Ion Exchange, Paul Albert Falcon

Theses

A pH parametric pump, coupled with ion exchange, was used in an experimental investigation to separate a protein-water binary mixture. The model system consisted of a hemoglobin-water binary mixture. A pH gradient throughout the parametric pumping column was sustained with the use of hollow fiber devices incorporating phosphate buffer circulation.

Data is presented for both batch and semi-continuous recuperative mode pH parametric pumping. Continuous pH parametric pumping for protein isolation has also been envisioned.

No attempt has been made to optimize this newly devel-oped process; however, certain parameters are suspected of controlling separation, including buffer concentration, half cycle time, packed …

The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas Jun 1977

The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas

Theses

Stokes' Law, has been standardly utilized to calculate the terminal velocity of falling particles. However, the limitation of Stokes' Law is that it does not take into account the container walls and their resulting drag forces. Extensive work with additional drag due to cylindrical container walls has been examined by many investigators. The classical and earliest is the well know Ladenburg Correction which cannot be utilized with non-cylindrical containers. This experimental thesis examines the analog of the Ladenburg relationship for a square container. This experimental thesis was undertaken to experimentally determine the value of the constant K1 for a …

Aasho Road Test Tandem Axleload Data Adapted To Fundamental Concepts, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens Jun 1977

Aasho Road Test Tandem Axleload Data Adapted To Fundamental Concepts, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The reptitions of tandem axleloads applied to the AASHO Road Test were analyzed by the same method previously reported in analyzing the corresponding single axleload data. The essential findings were: 1. One repetition of a 34-kip (151-kN) tandem axleload appears to cause the same damage as one repetition of an 18-kip (80-kN) single axleload. 2. The relationship of log repetitions versus axleload used by Kentucky appear to be equally valid for single and tandem axleloads. 3. The use of superposition principles, and equivalency of repetitions, in combination with terminal serviceability indiced permitted analyses of the tandem axleload data and comparison …

Nonlinear Buckling Of Deep Cylindrical Shell Panels With Imperfections, Madhusudan H. Jhaveri May 1977

Nonlinear Buckling Of Deep Cylindrical Shell Panels With Imperfections, Madhusudan H. Jhaveri

Dissertations

The work presented in this dissertation is devoted to the analysis of nonlinear buckling of thin cylindrical shells with imperfections. The nonlinearity of the problem treated in this dissertation is that associated with large displacements in the linear elastic range. The method used is not restricted by the magnitude of the displacements provided that the strains do not exceed the limit of proportionality.

Thus, based upon the large deflection theory, cylindrical shell panel is investigated for buckling under the action of uniform external pressure. Certain higher order infinitesimal terms which are usually neglected in the shallow shell theories, have been …

Flow Of Polymer Melt Blends Through Porous Media, James Atwood Parker May 1977

Flow Of Polymer Melt Blends Through Porous Media, James Atwood Parker

Dissertations

The flow of molten polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate) and three blends of these polymers has been studied in a rheogoniometer and in packed beds of unconsolidated spherical glass beads. One primary purpose of the study was to determine the behavior of polymer melt blends in porous media flow. The second major purpose of the work was to develop and test a new and powerful model for packed bed flow based upon the Huang generalized rheological constitutive equations.

Rheological characterization of the pure polymers and blends was obtained using a Roberts-Weissenberg rheogoniometer. Shear and normal stresses were measured at shear rates from …

Acoustical Holography By Holographic Interferometry, Amin Mohamed Hanafy May 1977

Acoustical Holography By Holographic Interferometry, Amin Mohamed Hanafy

Dissertations

The ability to "see" with sound has long been an intriguing concept. It is apparent that ultrasonic energy can give an image of an object not obtainable with light or even with x-rays.

In this dissertation, a novel "three-step acoustical holographic imaging system" is described and several means for its implementation are analyzed. A novel holographic acoustic image converter, which constitutes a fundamental link in the three step imaging method was also developed. The use of optical holographic techniques to convert an arbitrary acoustic image to a visible image is conducted and resulted in the introduction of the new technique …
