Green-Extension Systems At High-Speed Intersections [Sept. 1978], Charles V. Zegeer, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of green-extension systems (GES) for reducing the dilemma-zone problem associated with the amber phase of traffic signals at high-speed intersections. Reactions of 2,100 drivers were noted during the amber phase at nine intersections, and the dilemma-zone distances with respect to the stop bar were determined.

Before-and-after studies made at three green-extension sites showed a 54-percent reduction in total accidents and a 75-percent reduction in rear-end accidents after GES installation. Accident severity was unaffected.

Conflict, volume, delay, and speed data were taken before and after GES installation at two sites. A …

Evaluation Of Paint Stripe Beads, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent Sep 1978

Evaluation Of Paint Stripe Beads, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report presents another phase of a study on evaluation of paint stripes and glass beads. The results from the previous phases of this study indicated that large-scale, experimental evaluation of a 1.65 refractive-index bead and a large-gradation, 1.52 refractive-index bead was warranted. Poor embedment of beads, however, precluded the evaluation because the quick-drying paint used did not allow beads to be properly embedded. After progressive thinning of the paint with solvent, adequate bead embedment was obtained. Drying time, of course, was longer.

Attempts were made to obtain good embedment without extending the drying time. This included testing of a …

Energy In Agriculture: Fan Performance On Grain Drying Bins, Otto J. Loewer, Thomas C. Bridges, G. M. White, Robert L. Fehr, Larry W. Turner Aug 1978

Energy In Agriculture: Fan Performance On Grain Drying Bins, Otto J. Loewer, Thomas C. Bridges, G. M. White, Robert L. Fehr, Larry W. Turner

Agricultural Engineering Energy Series

One of the keys to successful in·bin grain drying and aeration is the matching of a drying or aeration fan to the drying or storage bin. A properly designed system will be more efficient in terms of both drying and energy utilization. The quantity of air that may be delivered through the grain depends upon grain type, bin size, fan type, fan horsepower, depth of grain, percent of foreign material and the extent to which the grain is packed.

Pavement Evaluation Using Road Rater Deflections, Gary W. Sharpe, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen Aug 1978

Pavement Evaluation Using Road Rater Deflections, Gary W. Sharpe, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Dynamic test deflections have been duplicated by elastic theory using the Chevron N-layered computer program. Dynamic surface deflections obtained using the Road Rater have been used in conjunction with elastic theory to analyze pavement behavior. A procedure has been developed to use field measured Road Rater deflections to estimate the elastic moduli of the foundation material and to determine the equivalent thicknesses of new material which approximate the behavior of the structure. The estimated moduli and (or) equivalent thicknesses may be used as inputs to design overlay thicknesses. An analysis of the deflections of the first three sensors of the …

Micro-Relief Surface Depression Storage: Changes During Rainfall Events And Their Application To Rainfall-Runoff Models, J. Kent Mitchell, Benjamin A. Jones Jr. Aug 1978

Micro-Relief Surface Depression Storage: Changes During Rainfall Events And Their Application To Rainfall-Runoff Models, J. Kent Mitchell, Benjamin A. Jones Jr.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Micro-relief surface depression storage is one of the dynamic components of the rainfall-runoff process. The quantification of the effect of rainfall intensity and duration on the micro-relief was the subject of this study. Micro-relief measurements were made on 88 soil bin samples before and after the application of simulated rainfall events. The surface depression changes are described with empirical equations, using basic rainfall, surface hydrology, and soil parameters and their cross products as independent variables. A rainfall-runoff model demonstrates the value of a dynamic description of the surface depression storage function.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion By Using A Solidification Melting Cycle, Wen Liang Lin Aug 1978

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion By Using A Solidification Melting Cycle, Wen Liang Lin

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

An OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) power plant uses warm surface seawater (24° C - 28° C) as a heat source and deep cold seawater (4° C - 7°C) as a heat sink. With this temperature difference, a heat engine which delivers either mechanical or electric power can be constructed. There are some limitations and problems of evaporators and condensers to be used in a closed Rankine cycle OTEC plant which have seriously limited the applicability of this concept. This study proposed a process using the S/L engine---a heat engine that utilizes a working medium undergoing solidification and melting operations. …

An Analytical Comparison And Contrast Of The Automobile Rotary Combustion Engine And The Reciprocating Engine, Eric K. Earle Jul 1978

An Analytical Comparison And Contrast Of The Automobile Rotary Combustion Engine And The Reciprocating Engine, Eric K. Earle

Graduate Research Papers

The ReCE, although possessing many good characteristics as a motive source of power, is still somewhat far from achieving the desired efficiency in man's quest for better economical and practical means of transportation, due to the lack of higher speeds and its inability to burn all of the fuel admitted as a result of its large number of moving parts, their weight, size and reciprocating motion.

The design and development of the RCE has overcome many of the above problems inherent in the ReCE, and, therefore, has the potential of replacing the ReCE as the major source of automotive power …

Surface Roughness Effects In Hydrodynamic Lubrication, Johnny Lynn Teale Jul 1978

Surface Roughness Effects In Hydrodynamic Lubrication, Johnny Lynn Teale

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Prediction of pressure and leakage in a hydrodynamic bearing when surface roughness effects are important is an essential step in bearing design. The inclusion of surface roughness effects in bearing analysis allows more accurate prediction of bearing life. It has been shown that the average flow model developed by Cheng and Patir is a promising technique for determining surface roughness effects. The objective of this investigation is to examine the validity, applicability and limitation of the average flow model. Validity of the average flow model is ascertained by checking the independence of flow factors. Discussion of the general Reynolds equation …

A System For Detecting Neutrons In The Harsh Radiation Environment Of A Relativistic Electron Beam, Lyle Wayne Kruse Jul 1978

A System For Detecting Neutrons In The Harsh Radiation Environment Of A Relativistic Electron Beam, Lyle Wayne Kruse

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Newly developed detectors and procedures allow measurement of neutron yield and energy in the harsh radiation environment of a relativistic electron beam source. A new photomultiplier tube design and special gating methods provide the basis for novel time-of-flight and total-yield detectors. The technique of activation analysis is expanded to provide a neutron energy spectrometer. There is a demonstrated potential in the use of the integrated system as a valuable diagnostic tool to study particle-beam fusion, intense ion-beam interactions, and pulsed neutron sources for simulating weapons effects. A physical lower limit of 108 neutrons into 4π is established for accurate …

Fuzzy Probability And Probabilistic Processes, Abraham Kandel Jul 1978

Fuzzy Probability And Probabilistic Processes, Abraham Kandel

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this dissertation, contributions to fuzzy probability and to differential equations with fuzzy parameters are made.

After an introductory chapter, a review of fuzzy sets and fuzzy algebra is given in Chapter 2. The main new results of the dissertation are contained in Chapter 3.

In Chapter 3, Zadeh's definition of the probability of a "fuzzy event" and "the event" and "the average value of a fuzzy function" are extended into the time domain. It is then shown that not only grades of membership, but also probabilistic processes with notions of fuzziness contained, can be defined which obey ordinary, matric, …
