Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage: A Cost And Sizing Study, Haur D. Shaw, J. Derald Morgan, Max Darwin Anderson Oct 1980

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage: A Cost And Sizing Study, Haur D. Shaw, J. Derald Morgan, Max Darwin Anderson

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Two applications for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices in power systems are studied. One is for peak shaving, and the other is for load leveling. Consideration is given to placing these devices near load centers to reduce the line losses. For (SMES) cases studied using smaller size devices at several load centers, the line losses are lowered. However, the efficiency of SMES is proportional to its size, and the capitol cost per MWH is much greater for a smaller size SMES unit when compared to a larger SMES unit. Once the location or locations for SMES have been selected, …

Thermal Gasification Of Densified Sewage Sludge And Solid Waste, Samuel A. Vigil, George Tchobanoglous

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The disposal of sewage sludge in an economic and environmentally acceptable manner is a problem common to all communities that have municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Similarly, all communities are faced with the disposal of increasing quantities of solid waste. The co-disposal of sludge and solid waste in a common facility is a potential solution to both of these problems. The results of an experimental program to verify the feasibility of the gasification process for the co-disposal of densified sludge and source separated solid waste are presented in this paper.

Optical Phase Modulation Utilizing Magnetoelastic Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Frank R. Trowbridge Oct 1980

Optical Phase Modulation Utilizing Magnetoelastic Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Frank R. Trowbridge

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Three different optical fiber phase modulators utilizing the magnetostrictive properties of the metallic glass alloy Fe74Co10B16 were constructed. By binding the optical fiber to the magnetostrictive metallic glass, the strain imparted to the metallic glass from the magnetic field is transferred to the optical fiber. The strain on the optical fiber shifts the phase of the light, which can be controlled indirectly by varying the current producing the magnetic field permeating the metallic glass. The performance of the modulators on the basis of optical phase shift as a function of bias magnetic field and optical phase shift as a function …

Project Scheduling Under Constrained Resources, Mohammed Benameur Oct 1980

Project Scheduling Under Constrained Resources, Mohammed Benameur

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report examines the widely acceptable Heuristic and Exact procedures for solving the problem of project scheduling and control under constrained resources. Heuristic approaches are more practical, however they depend on the type of the project as well as the resources involved. Exact procedures are illustrated using an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the problem, and also solving it using the Branch and Bound Technique. Impracticality of the exact methods stews from the fact that the computations expand to an unmanageable amount.

An Investigation Of Fabric Filtration For The Removal Of Colloidal Turbidity From A Laboratory Water, David Brent Jansen Oct 1980

An Investigation Of Fabric Filtration For The Removal Of Colloidal Turbidity From A Laboratory Water, David Brent Jansen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A kaolin in tapwater suspension was treated either with alum or one of two cationic polymers. The resulting suspension was filtered through various configurations of felt cloth filters. The kaolin suspension was adjusted to 100 JTU. Treatment by polymer consistently lowered the filtered effluent to less than 1 JTU. Jar tests were utilized to determine optimum coagulant dose for the tests. The formulation of a complete filter cake in the filter appeared to be the determining factor in the efficiency of water clarification by the filter. The literature lacked references to this concept as applied to water supply problems. The …

A Nonlinear Hybrid Vortex Method For Wings Having Side-Edge Separations, Li-Chuan Chu Oct 1980

A Nonlinear Hybrid Vortex Method For Wings Having Side-Edge Separations, Li-Chuan Chu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A Nonlinear Hybrid-Vortex method (NHV-method) has been developed for predicting the aerodynamic characteristics of wings exhibiting side-edge separations. The present method is a coupline between vortex-panel and vortex-line methods. In the near-field calculations, vortex panels are used while in the far-field calculat1ons, vortex lines are used.

The wing and its free-shear layers are divided into planar quadrilateral panels having first-order vorticity distribution. The aerodynamic boundary conditions and continuity of the vorticity distributions are imposed at certain nodal points on the panels. An iterative technique is used to satisfy these conditions to obtain the vorticity distributions and the wake shape as …

Thermodynamic And System Performance Analysis Of A Heat Pump That Employs A Two-Phase Flow Collector As Evaporator, Yu-Fang Chiang Oct 1980

Thermodynamic And System Performance Analysis Of A Heat Pump That Employs A Two-Phase Flow Collector As Evaporator, Yu-Fang Chiang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A thermodynamic model is developed to analyze the thermal performance of two phase flow solar collectors, The well-known equilibrium homogeneous theory is used to model the two phase flow in the solar collectors. The resultant set of coupled ordinary differential equations for saturated pressure and quality of working fluids in the collector tubes are solved by an iterative procedure using a fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The results are then applied to determine the thermal performance of a solar assisted heat pump which uses two phase flow collector as the evaporator, The results indicate that even with the use of less …

Experimental Study Of Delta Wing Leading-Edge Devices For Drag Reduction At High Lift, Thomas Dwight Johnson Jr. Oct 1980

Experimental Study Of Delta Wing Leading-Edge Devices For Drag Reduction At High Lift, Thomas Dwight Johnson Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Future fighter aircraft requirements specify efficient supersonic cruise and high-g maneuverability at high lift. The slender delta wing meets the first requirement but has large lift induced drag increments at high lift. One method to alleviate the drag is to control the flow at the wing leading edge (LE) by means of small LE devices, so as to maintain locally attached flow to higher angles of attack and thus increase the level of aerodynamic thrust.

The devices selected for evaluation were the fence, slot, pylon-type vortex generator (VG), and sharp leading-edge extension (SLEE). These devices were tested on a 60° …

Feasibility Of Quasi-Random Band Model In Evaluating Atmospheric Radiance, Navin Mirakhur Oct 1980

Feasibility Of Quasi-Random Band Model In Evaluating Atmospheric Radiance, Navin Mirakhur

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The use of the quasi-random band model in evaluating the upwelling atmospheric radiation is investigated. The spectral transmittance and total band absorptance are evaluated for selected molecular bands by using the line-by-line model, quasi-random band model, exponential sum fit method, and empirical correlations, and these are compared with the available experimental results. The atmospheric transmittance and up welling radiance have been calculated by using the line-by-line and quasi-random models and are compared with the results of an existing program called LOWTRAN. The results obtained by the exponential sum fit and empirical relations are not in good agreement with experimental results …

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula Sep 1980

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula

Theses

Vapor pressure depression data of LiBr and LiCl in methanol at temperatures of 25,35, and 45°C were measured in the molality range 0.1-4.4m using a static method, where the difference in vapor pressure of the electrolytic solution is compared to that of pure methanol.

Osmotic coefficients were calculated from the vapor pressure data. This data was then correlated with both the one parameter Bromley equation and the three parameter Pitzer equation. For all systems at all temperatures, the data were better correlated by the Pitzer equation than with the Bromley equation. Mean activity coefficients of the two salts at the …
