Threat Modeling Based On A Design Basis Threat For Nuclear Security, Abu Zafor Mohammad Salahuddin, Altab Hossain, Mohammad Shawkat Akbar

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Identification of the design basis threat (DBT) of a nuclear facility is an important factor of overall safety, for which the operator is mainly responsible per the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency. As threat levels increase especially threats beyond the DBT-the responsibility of the state also increases. In recent years, only a few studies on nuclear security and DBTs have comprehensively detailed the full spectrum of nuclear facilities in a nation. Thus, this paper presents the correlation between an actual threat and the DBT. The objectives of the study are to assist in establishing physical protection system (PPS) …

Crystalline Colloidal Arrays: Exploring Light-Matter Interactions, Haley W. Jones

All Dissertations

Understanding and manipulating quantum light-matter interactions, especially in the context of nanostructured environments, is highly critical for technological progress and inventive solutions in the fields of telecommunications, energy-efficient lighting, and cutting-edge quantum computing technologies. The fundamental interactions of photons with a surrounding environment directly impact the performance and efficiency of devices such as lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and quantum computing elements, which leverage the unique properties of confined structured environments. Since the late 1980s, the connection between a structured environment and the decay kinetics of an embedded fluorophore has been a highly debated and unresolved topic in the literature. More …

Review: Implementation Of Video Documentation In Lessons Learned System In Construction, Jainil Patel

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Organizations employ Lessons Learned Systems (LLS) to manage knowledge and capture valuable project experiences to improve future performance. However, the construction industry has yet to adopt such systems widely, presumably due to its sluggish tech integration and risk-prone characteristics. Of the numerous fragmented obstacles that impede LLS adoption, one noteworthy obstacle would be the challenge faced during the text documentation of experiences. Traditional text inputs are labor-intensive and time- consuming. Hence, video documentation can be a more efficient replacement with its quick and modern recording features. The technological advancement and the preference shift of younger generations from text to video …

Efficacy Of Virtual Reality-Based Simulations In Training Aviation Maintenance Technicians On Maintenance Procedures, Gayatri Anoop May 2024

Efficacy Of Virtual Reality-Based Simulations In Training Aviation Maintenance Technicians On Maintenance Procedures, Gayatri Anoop

All Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic forced institutions of higher education (IHEs) to halt in-person classes and transition to online platforms. Given the intricate process of adapting hands-on experiments to the online environment, this transition seemed particularly challenging for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) labs. The abrupt nature of this transition added to the difficulties, given that the IHEs were inadequately prepared for seamless continuity during the pandemic. In the first phase of this project, a literature review was conducted to understand the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on education. Specifically, the review explored the challenges that institutions of higher education faced, …

To study the effects of materials properties, vulcanized natural rubber sheets with different crosslink densities, loaded with small …

Robust And Trustworthy Deep Learning: Attacks, Defenses And Designs, Bingyin Zhao May 2024

Robust And Trustworthy Deep Learning: Attacks, Defenses And Designs, Bingyin Zhao

All Dissertations

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved unprecedented success in many fields. However, robustness and trustworthiness have become emerging concerns since DNNs are vulnerable to various attacks and susceptible to data distributional shifts. Attacks such as data poisoning and out-of-distribution scenarios such as natural corruption significantly undermine the performance and robustness of DNNs in model training and inference and impose uncertainty and insecurity on the deployment in real-world applications. Thus, it is crucial to investigate threats and challenges against deep neural networks, develop corresponding countermeasures, and dig into design tactics to secure their safety and reliability. The works investigated in this …

Free And Forced Vibrations Of Elastically Restrained Cantilever With Lumped Oscillator, Alireza Babaei, Johné Parker, Paria Moshaver

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

The efficiency assessment of cantilever-based energy harvesters relies on vibrational analysis, which necessitates modi- fications aimed at enhancing efficiency. These modifications involve manipulating the fundamental frequency to lower values and encompassing a wider range of resonances within a specified bandwidth. Consequently, this paper introduces an original analytical-numerical exploration into the vibratory response of a cantilever with a novel boundary condi- tion involving an elastically restrained oscillator-spring arrangement. At the microbeam’s tip, an oscillator is elastically confined by a linear spring, resulting in a novel set of coupled governing equations and a distinct shearing boundary condition. Microbeam equations is derived from …

A Comprehensive Materials Approach To Thermal Management In Fiber Lasers, Bailey Meehan May 2024

A Comprehensive Materials Approach To Thermal Management In Fiber Lasers, Bailey Meehan

All Dissertations

Optical fiber-based amplifiers and lasers enable a great many useful devices and conveniences. Unfortunately, however, they can generate considerable heat during operation that drives the need for complex cooling solutions, thus reducing many of the size, weight, and power (SWAP) benefits for which fiber lasers are known. Additionally, at elevated temperatures, thermally-driven phenomena, such as Transverse Mode Instability (TMI), can be induced that limit the power-scaling of fiber lasers. The focus of this Dissertation is to explore novel approaches to thermal management in fiber lasers through judicious materials science and engineering to obviate the aforementioned limitations. Fibers studied in this …

The Development Of A Convenient And Consistent Methodology For Flight Proficiency To Certify Multi-Rotor Uas Pilots For State Departments Of Transportation, Colin Dees

All Dissertations

To fly an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), commonly referred to as a “drone,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires pilots to pass a knowledge test. There is no requirement at the state or federal level for drone operators to demonstrate the ability to operate a UAS. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) has created an exam for public and private entities to assess basic UAS flight proficiency. It is the only nationally recognized flight proficiency protocol. NIST does not provide a scoring recommendation and leaves it to the user to determine the minimum criteria to pass. There is …

Heat related injuries are a significant problem for the United States Armed Forces. There were over 11,000 confirmed cases of heat-related illnesses that were diagnosed at more than 230 military installations from 2018-2022. These injuries are primarily due to hyperthermia (i.e., abnormally high body temperature) resulting from extreme environmental temperatures, high humidity, medications, or excessive physical work or exercise. Fort Moore has the most heat related injuries of any installation in the U.S. Department of Defense since it is home to one of the largest U. S. Army training posts with most training involving intensive outdoor activity in high heat …

Analysis Of Cnn Performance Utilizing Jpeg Compressed Images Created On An Fpga, Timothy Shaughnessy

All Theses

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) was formed in 1986 to create a method to reduce image size primarily for ease of transfer on the Internet. Released to the public in 1992, JPEG compression is a form of lossless compression that has been a staple for compressing images. JPEG is the go-to image compressor because it provides high compression ratios while maintaining visual integrity for the human eye. Growing image sizes have made JPEG compression increasingly relevant. It is vital to keep up with growing data sizes for improved image handling performance on an edge device like a Field-Programmable Gate Array …
