Deconvolution Applications In Arterial Dynamics, Shanthi Ganesan Sep 1991

Deconvolution Applications In Arterial Dynamics, Shanthi Ganesan

Theses

This thesis deals with the computation of the Arterial Impulse Response Function by deconvolving aortic pressure and flow signals in time domain. Several methods have been developed in the past to obtain a solution for the convolution integral. These are (1) Transform method, and (2) Numerical Approximation methods : a. Conventional method b. Relaxation methods.

These methods have been applied in the past to the RC network model and it was found to work well. In this thesis, the methods are applied to data from more realistic models and also on data obtained from dogs. The model considered is a …

Knowledge Based Designing Of Broadband Coaxial Cable Networks, Tauqir Hameed Sep 1991

Knowledge Based Designing Of Broadband Coaxial Cable Networks, Tauqir Hameed

Theses

The objective of this research was to build a broadband coaxial cable network. One of the basic requirement of a network is the physical link transmission medium. For the purposes of this research, broadband coaxial cable was chosen as a physical medium of data communication. The approach taken in this research was to divide network design into three main steps. In the first step, the decision on topology of the network was determined. Both Star and Minimum Spanning Tree topologies were used and then the Esau-Williams Algorithm was employed to minimize the cable length. In the second step, various signal …

Stability Of Hot Mix Asphalt With Petroleum Contaminated Soils, De-Rong Lobo Huang Sep 1991

Stability Of Hot Mix Asphalt With Petroleum Contaminated Soils, De-Rong Lobo Huang

Theses

One of the most effective ways of reducing petroleum contaminated soil is to use it in the production of hot mix asphalt. Both asphalt cement and petroleum contaminates have similar chemical properties. Therefore, The contaminates will be locked within the asphalt matrix without potential leaching.

The six different petroleum contaminate soil samples from New Jersey were used in this research. Since those samples have different physical properties (such as moisture content, specific gravity, plastic limit, liquid limit, grain size distribution) and chemical properties( such as concentration of the contaminate, and type of contaminates) the maximum amount of petroleum contaminated soil …

Bio-Mechanics Of The Hip Joint And The Engineering Considerations In The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures, Manoj D. Nene Sep 1991

Bio-Mechanics Of The Hip Joint And The Engineering Considerations In The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures, Manoj D. Nene

Theses

Numerous previous attempts have been made to determine the magnitude and the direction of forces acting on the hip joint. The mechanism of femoral neck fractures and the frequently occurring failure of its internal fixation has led engineers to analyze the forces involved. An unstable intertrochanteric fracture is one which lacks continuity of the bone cortex on the opposing surfaces of the proximal and digital fragments. A mathematical model is created in this study to examine the 135° and 150° nail plate. The results give an approximate estimation of stresses on the two plates. A 3D finite element model of …

Radiation From The Cylindrical Dielectric Taper, Tor-Odd Hoydal Sep 1991

Radiation From The Cylindrical Dielectric Taper, Tor-Odd Hoydal

Theses

The radiation problem of the cylindrical dielectric taper, excited by the HE11 dominant mode, is studied. A theoretical model and a numerical investigation into the radiation characteristics of such a tapered structure are presented. The model is based upon the combination of the exact modal field solutions for a step profile cylindrical dielectric waveguide, Local Mode Theory, and the Equivalence Principle for the determination of equivalent current densities.

The far-zone radiation field is considered to be the summation of the fields produced by two radiative components in the dielectric rod/conical structure: The "aperture" of the uniform dielectric rod at …

Sol-Gel Derived, Air-Baked Indium And Tin Oxide Films, Douglas M. Mattox Sep 1991

Sol-Gel Derived, Air-Baked Indium And Tin Oxide Films, Douglas M. Mattox

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sol-gel derived, transparent, electrically conducting tin-doped In2O3 film system has been developed which only requires air baking. The films approximate the properties of sputtered and hot-sprayed films but are simpler and less expensive to apply by dipping and spinning procedures. Substrate sodium interference was seen to be minimal. © 1991.

Composite Stock Cutting Through Simulated Annealing, Pipatpong Poshyanonda, Cihan H. Dagli Sep 1991

Composite Stock Cutting Through Simulated Annealing, Pipatpong Poshyanonda, Cihan H. Dagli

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper explores the use of Simulated Annealing as an optimization technique for the problem Composite Material Stock Cutting. The shapes are not constrained to be convex polygons or even regular shapes. However, due to the composite nature of the material, the orientation of the shapes on the stock is restricted. For placements of various shapes, we show how to determine a cost function, annealing parameters, and performance.

Temperature Dependence Of Optical Properties Of Gaas, Huade Yao, Paul G. Snyder, John A. Woollam Sep 1991

Temperature Dependence Of Optical Properties Of Gaas, Huade Yao, Paul G. Snyder, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Pseudodielectric functions (ε) = (ε1) + i (ε2) of GaAs were measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), in the range of 1.W.45 eV, at temperatures from room temperature (RT) to ~610 ° C. A very clean, smooth surface was obtained by first growing an epitaxial layer of GaAs on a GaAs substrate and immediately capping it with a protective layer of arsenic. The cap prevented surface oxidation during transport to the measurement chamber, where it was evaporated under ultrahigh vacuum at ~350 °C. Room-temperature SE results from this surface are in good agreement with those in the …

Wet Process For Fly Ash Beneficiation, Jiann-Yang Hwang Sep 1991

Wet Process For Fly Ash Beneficiation, Jiann-Yang Hwang

Michigan Tech Patents

A wet process for the beneficiation of a fly ash by-product has the following steps: a) forming a slurry mixture of a fly ash material and a liquid; b) gravitationally separating and collecting a first material fraction of the fly ash having a density less than the liquid by skimming off floating slurry material; c) separating a first magnetic fraction from the slurry by subjecting the slurry to a magnetic field of from about 300 gauss to about 10 kilogauss; d) separating the unburned carbon from the remaining slurry components by adding an effective amount of an oil having a …
