Optimal Control Of Infinite-Order Smart Composite Structural Systems Using Distributed Sensors, Robert Butler, Vittal S. Rao Jan 1994

Optimal Control Of Infinite-Order Smart Composite Structural Systems Using Distributed Sensors, Robert Butler, Vittal S. Rao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the design of spatially shaped distributed sensors for the control of infinite-order structural systems. The smart materials polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and shape-memory alloys can be utilized in the development of customized distributed sensors. Sensor shape-optimization techniques are needed for the implementation of optimal control strategies. In this paper, a method for generating the shapes of distributed sensors using finite-dimensional approximations to desired curvature and curvature rate kernels is examined. The output of these spatially distributed sensors is utilized directly as the control signal for suppressing vibrations in infinite-order structural systems. This …

Microwave Diagnosis Of Rubber Compounds, Stoyan I. Ganchev, J. Bhattacharyya, Sasan Bakhtiari, Nasser N. Qaddoumi, Deborah Brandenburg, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of a study investigating the dielectric properties of rubber compounds and their constituents in the frequency range of 5 to 24 GHz are presented. A completely filled short circuited waveguide technique was used to conduct these dielectric measurements. The influence of carbon black content in rubber was investigated for carefully prepared rubber samples. The results showed that for all frequencies, the dielectric constant increases as a function of increasing carbon black content. The variation of dielectric constant values decreases as frequency increases. The presence of curatives in uncured rubber samples was also detected, which indicates the sensitivity of …

Data-Feedthrough Faults In Circuits Using Unclocked Storage Elements, Waleed K. Al-Assadi, D. Lu, A. P. Jayasumana, Y. K. Malaiya, C. Q. Tong Jan 1994

Data-Feedthrough Faults In Circuits Using Unclocked Storage Elements, Waleed K. Al-Assadi, D. Lu, A. P. Jayasumana, Y. K. Malaiya, C. Q. Tong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Some faults in storage elements (SEs) do not manifest as stuck-at-0/1 faults. These include data-feedthrough faults that cause the SE cell to exhibit combinational behaviour. The authors investigate the implications of such faults on the behaviour of circuits using unclocked SEs. It is shown that effects of data-feedthrough faults at the behavioural level are different from those due to stuck-at faults, and therefore tests generated for the latter may be inadequate

The Adaptive Control Of Smart Structures Using Neural Networks, Vittal Rao, Rajendra Damle, Chris Tebbe, Frank J. Kern

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The application of adaptive control algorithms for vibration suppression of smart structures is investigated in this paper. An accurate mathematical representation is not required in this approach. The controller adapts to the parameter variations of the structural system by updating the controller gains. When the desired performance of an unknown plant with respect to an input signal can be specified in the form of a linear or a non-linear differential equation, stable control can be achieved using model-reference adaptive control (MRAC) techniques. The conventional MRAC techniques have been successfully implemented on a smart-structure test article resulting in perfect model following. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Ysz Thin Film Electrolytes, C. C. Chen, M. M. Nasrallah, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dense, homogeneous and crack-free thin films (0.2-2 microm in thickness) of (ZrO2)0.84(YO1.5)0.16 (YSZ) were deposited on porous or dense substrates, at temperatures not exceeding 600°C, using a solution-deposition technique. The structural evolution and microstructure of the deposited films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of fine-grain cubic YSZ at annealing temperatures as low as 600°C. Grain growth occurred at higher temperatures as detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM). ac impedance spectroscopy was used to study the electrical characteristics of the YSZ films as a function of temperature. The ionic conductivity …

Comparison Of High-Temperature Superconductors In Multi-Chip Module Applications, D. E. Ford, S. S. Scott, S. S. Ang, W. D. Brown

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In the application of high-temperature superconductors (HTSCs) in multi-chip module (MCM) technology, it is first necessary to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the various HTSC compounds. The standard criteria for comparing the suitability of HTSCs in electronics applications has been critical temperature (Tc )and critical current density (Jc ). It is also necessary to consider the physical properties of HTSCs in relation to the various processing techniques required in fabrication of MCMs. These techniques can be grouped into four main areas: deposition, patterning, packaging, and characterization. The four main HTSC materials, Y-Ba-Cu-O, Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, Tl,Ba-Ca-Cu-O and Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O, will be compared …

Using The Cern Program-Library Graphics And Interactive Data Display, Morgan T. Burks, Wilson H. Howe, Christine A. Byrd, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Small scale Monte Carlo programming is growing rapidly due to the ease with which complex problems may be formulated by any programmer. These programmers may choose to exploit graphics and interactive displays available in the program library developed and maintained by CERN (the Center for European Nuclear Research). This paper outlines the use of graphics and interactive data display features of the CERN program library, developed for visualizing simulated data events in particle detectors. One example uses GEANT, CERN's Monte Carlo modeling program, to simulate 300 MeV/c protons incident on a silicon slab. Display packages for GEANT are available both …

Reaction Of Titanocene Dichloride With Acetylenedicarboxylate, Tanya L. Hagler, Mark Draganjac, Paul M. Nave, J. Ed Bennett, Farooq Kahn, Robert Engelken, Gerard Williams, Chris Poole, Kwok Fai Yu

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The reaction of Cp2TiCl2 with either the mono- or dipotassium salt of acetylenedicarboxylic acid (ADC) gives high yields of an insoluble orange product. The insoluble compound shows potential semiconductor behavior, as evidenced by an apparent bandgap in the orange region of the visible spectrum. Under N2 ,the compound decomposes at 238° C, eventually losing approximately 46% total mass up to 1350° C. The exothermic decomposition in air, beginning at 235° C, results in the formation of titanium oxides.

Gamma Ray Emissions From Binary Pulsar Systems, Tony A. Hall, Andrew T. Sustich Jan 1994

Gamma Ray Emissions From Binary Pulsar Systems, Tony A. Hall, Andrew T. Sustich

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A method is developed for estimating the gamma ray flux impinging upon the earth from production in binary pulsar systems. We calculate production of the 6.13 MeV gamma ray line characteristic of 16O. These are produced by protons emitted by the pulsar interacting with 16O atoms at the surface of the companion. We examine different types of companion stars and estimate the gamma ray flux at the earth as a function of proton emission from the pulsar and distance from the earth. Prospects for detection from earth are discussed.

Tetraethylene Gycol-Based Electrolytes For High Temperature Electrodeposition Of Compound Semiconductors, Chris Poole, Robert Engelken, Brandon Kemp, Jason Brannen Jan 1994

Tetraethylene Gycol-Based Electrolytes For High Temperature Electrodeposition Of Compound Semiconductors, Chris Poole, Robert Engelken, Brandon Kemp, Jason Brannen

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We report an investigation of tetraethylene glycol (TEG) solutions of chloride salts (CdCl2 ,TeCl4 ,and HgCl2 ) for electrodeposition of films of CdTe and Hg1.xCdxTe, leading II-VI semiconductors. The high boiling point (314°C), below-room temperature (T) (-6°C) melting point, adequate metal chloride solubilities, and low toxicity of TEG make it a good candidate for electrodeposition at T > 200°C. Such temperatures tend to activate growth of larger crystallites than with aqueous electrolytes at T< 100 °C, as are advantageous in optoelectronic applications. Initial results do, indeed, indicate a dramatic increase in crystallinity with deposition temperature, especially for the CdTe films which are nearly amorphous when grown at room temperature. Hg1.xCdxTe films (x< 0.5) are marginally polycrystalline when grown at room temperature but also improve in crystallinity at higher growth temperatures. There appears to be a strong decrease in film adherence and uniformity as growth temperature increases for both materials probably because the greatly increased carrier concentrations at higher temperatures increase film conductivity which, in turn, supports easy electroplating of protruding loose dendritic and/or columnar crystallites, instead of the monolayer-by monolayer growth of lower conductivity material as occurs at lower temperatures, especially in the higher bandgap/lower conductivity CdTe. The same increase in film conductivity with temperature is responsible for the decrease in the relative photosensitivity of both the CdTe and Hg1.x CdxTe with temperature. At all temperatures, the inferior adherence, uniformity, and photosensitivity as well as the superior crystallinity of Hg1.xCd xTe over that of the CdTe are also explained by its lower bandgap and higher conductivity. On balance, however, the initial results prove the utility of high temperature TEG electrolytes for electrodepositing CdTe and Hg1.xCdxTe films with much better crystallinity than for those grown at lower temperatures, notably in aqueous baths.

Evaluation Of Photodiode Arrays For Use In Rocket Plume Monitoring And Diagnostics, Dallas Snider, M. Keith Hudson, Robert B. Shanks, Reagan Cole Jan 1994

Evaluation Of Photodiode Arrays For Use In Rocket Plume Monitoring And Diagnostics, Dallas Snider, M. Keith Hudson, Robert B. Shanks, Reagan Cole

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The spectroscopic analysis of plume emissions is a non-intrusive method which has been used to check for fatigue and possible damage throughout the pumps and other mechanisms in a rocket motor or engine. These components are made of various alloys. Knowing the composition of the alloys and for which parts they are used, one can potentially determine from the emissions in the plume which component is failing. Currently, Optical Multichannel Analyzer systems are being used which utilize charge coupled devices, cost tens of thousands of dollars, are somewhat delicate, and usually require cooling. We have developed two rugged instruments using …

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret Erçal, Hsi-Chieh Lee, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss, Anurag Chawla

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991 in the United States, with approximately 80% of patients expected to survive 5 years. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully, Thus, in recent years, there has been rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma. Here, the authors present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from 3 benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. The approach uses discriminant features, based on tumor …

Effective Bandgap Shrinkage In Gaas, E. S. Harmon, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1994

Effective Bandgap Shrinkage In Gaas, E. S. Harmon, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electrical measurements of the equilibrium np product (n2ie) in heavily doped n‐ and p‐GaAs were performed. The n2ieDproduct (where D is the diffusivity) was measured by fitting the collector current‐voltage characteristic of a homojunction bipolar transistor to an ideal diode equation modified to account for transport in thin base transistors. The n2ie product was then extracted from n2ieD by utilizing diffusivity results obtained with the zero‐field time‐of‐flight technique. Our results show significant effective band‐gap shrinkage in heavily doped p‐GaAs, and very little effective band‐gap shrinkage …

Thermal Velocity Limits To Diffusive Electron Transport In Thin‐Base Np+N Gaas Bipolar Transistors, E. S. Harmon, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom, F. Cardone Jan 1994

Thermal Velocity Limits To Diffusive Electron Transport In Thin‐Base Np+N Gaas Bipolar Transistors, E. S. Harmon, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom, F. Cardone

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present experimental evidence that minority electron transport across a thin, quasineutral p+ GaAs region is limited by the thermal velocity of the electrons rather than by conventional diffusive transport. A set of GaAs homojunction np+n transistors with base widths of 4000, 2000, 1000, and 500 Å was fabricated and characterized. The diffusive modelpredicts that the dc collector current of the 500‐Å base width transistors should be eight times larger than the collector current of transistors with a 4000‐Å‐wide base. The experimental results, however, show only a factor of ~3.5 increase in collector current. The measured collector …

Interposed Abdominal Compression As An Adjunct To Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, Jeffrey B. Sack, Karl B. Kern Jan 1994

Interposed Abdominal Compression As An Adjunct To Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs, Jeffrey B. Sack, Karl B. Kern

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The addition of interposed abdominal compression (IAC) to otherwise standard CPR provides external pressure over the abdomen in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compression. Interposed abdominal compression is a simple manual technique that can supplement the use of adrenergic drugs to increase both coronary perfusion pressure and total blood flow during CPR. Mechanistically, manual abdominal compressions induce both central aortic and central venous pressure pulses. However, owing to differences in venous versus arterial capacitance, the former are usually greater than the latter, so that systemic perfusion pressure is enhanced. Moreover, practical experience and theoretical analysis have suggested subtle refinements …

A Study Of Dc Permanent Magnet Motor Noise Related To Line Current, Candace Rogers Suriano Jan 1994

A Study Of Dc Permanent Magnet Motor Noise Related To Line Current, Candace Rogers Suriano

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Lightweight, compact and inexpensive DC permanent magnet motors are well suited for low cost high production use in industry. Unfortunately, the audible noise emanating from these motors can cause a false negative perception of the motor's quality. In cars, for example, fan motor noise can be a nuisance. The objective of this thesis is to examine the connection between motor noise and the line current wave form for a specific four pole DC permanent magnet motor. It is further concerned with identifying the underlying factors which influence the line current ripple. An audible noise to motor current transfer function is …
