Investigating The Structure-Property Correlations Of Pyrolyzed Phenolic Resin As A Function Of Degree Of Carbonization, Ivan Gallegos, Vikas Varshney, Josh Kemppainen, Gregory Odegard
Michigan Tech Publications
Carbon-carbon (C/C) composites are attractive materials for high-speed flights and terrestrial atmospheric reentry applications due to their insulating thermal properties, thermal resistance, and high strength-to-weight ratio. It is important to understand the evolving structure-property correlations in these materials during pyrolysis, but the extreme laboratory conditions required to produce C/C composites make it difficult to quantify the properties in situ. This work presents an atomistic modeling methodology to pyrolyze a crosslinked phenolic resin network and track the evolving thermomechanical properties of the skeletal matrix during simulated pyrolysis. First, the crosslinked resin is pyrolyzed and the resulting char yield and mass density …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This work presents a nano-watt digital output temperature sensor featuring a supply-insensitive, self-biased current source. Second-order temperature dependencies of the MOS diode are canceled to produce a stable reference and a linear temperature-sensitive voltage. The sensor integrates a sensing unit, voltage-controlled differential ring oscillators, and a low-power frequency-to-digital converter, utilizing a resistor-less design to minimize power and area. The delay element in the ring oscillator reduces stage count, improving noise performance and compactness. Fabricated in 65 nm CMOS, the sensor occupies 0.02 mm2 and consumes 60 nW at 25 °C and 0.8 V. Measurements show an inaccuracy of +1.5/−1.6 °C …

Turbulent Structures In Coupled Wind-Wave Flows, Cerrina Mouchref
Dissertations and Theses
The interactions between wind and waves in offshore environments are complex and have yet to be fully understood. Analyzing these interactions is motivated by an increased interest in climate modeling and the deployment of offshore construction, such as offshore wind farms. In this study, experiments are performed in a wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyze wind-wave interactions over various wave and wind speeds. The addition of the wave, a moving boundary, leads to the use of Reynolds triple decomposition in order to separate the turbulent and wave-phase coherent fluctuations. A curvilinear coordinate system was used to analyze …

GDI.

Mitigating The Impacts Of Future Climate Change On Urban Infrastructure In Alabama Through Updating Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency (Idf) Curves, Kofi Ntow Opare
All ETDs from UAB
Climate change is set to profoundly impact urban infrastructure, causing increased flooding and storm damage, necessitating the reevaluation and adaptation of design methodologies to account for increasing precipitation extremes. This dissertation aims to enhance the resilience of urban infrastructure in Alabama by updating Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves, which are crucial for designing stormwater management systems, drainage networks, and flood control structures. Traditional IDF curves, derived from historical rainfall data, operate under the assumption of stationarity, an assumption increasingly invalidated by climate change. This research employs the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution and compares the efficacy of L-moments and Generalized Maximum …
Processing, Testing, Failure Analysis, And Modeling Of Elementary Natural Fiber-Reinforced Composites, Shuo Sun
All ETDs from UAB
Natural fiber reinforced composites have garnered significant interest as potential substitutes for conventional materials because of their eco-friendly attributes and favorable physical and mechanical properties. Typically, natural fibers undergo chemical treatments to enhance their compatibility with the polymer matrix prior to composite production. However, these treatments primarily affect the surface of the fiber bundles and have a limited impact on the inner elementary fibers within the bundle. This research work introduced a mechanical treatment method for hemp fiber by using an elevated temperature aqueous condition and mechanical force, which broke down the technical fiber bundles into elementary fibers and created …

A Continuum Mechanical Model Of The Brain During Closed Head Injury, Charles F. Babbs
A Continuum Mechanical Model Of The Brain During Closed Head Injury, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
Exactly how traumatic axonal injury happens as a result of brief, intense acceleration of the head remains a mystery. The same can be said about traumatic microbleeds observed in MRI scans of people suffering concussions. This paper explores the mechanism of injury in terms of continuum biomechanics. A full-sized viscoelastic model of the human brain is developed that is subjected to impact with the rigid skull after crossing the subarachnoid space in response to brief, intense whole head acceleration, as might occur in falls or in contact sports. The brain is considered a compressible viscoelastic body of approximately uniform density, …

Maxwell's Second Equation: The Gauss's Law For Magnetostatic Fields, Ashanthi Maxworth Phd
Maxwell's Second Equation: The Gauss's Law For Magnetostatic Fields, Ashanthi Maxworth Phd
EM Fields With Prof. Maxworth
Gauss's Law for magnetostatic fields says that the total magnetic flux through a closed surface is equal to zero. In otherwords, there are no magnetic monopoles. This law has been applied in multiple mathematical derivations. Watch the short video where Dr. Maxworth explains this law. In the worksheet you can observe the magnetic flux generated due to a current through a straight coaxial cable. Note that the magnetic flux always exisit as close loops making the total net flux through a closed surface zero and the direction of the magnetic field can be derived by the right hand rule, i.e …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Aircraft with non-traditional actuators tend to have multiple or infinite trim solutions for a single flight condition. For a given flight condition the bio-inspired rotating empennage fighter aircraft has multiple distinct trim solutions with varying tail rotation angles. In the present work these trim solutions are evaluated from various perspectives including: minimum drag, dynamic stability, controllability, and degree of controllability. The results of these analyses can be used to further constrain a trim solver routine such that a trim solution is found meeting a desired criterion. The purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the multiple trim solutions for …

Maxwell's Third Equation: The Faraday's Law, Ashanthi Maxworth Phd
EM Fields With Prof. Maxworth
Faraday's Law states that the voltage induced in a closed loop is equal to the rate of change of magnetic flux through that loop. As we know, when there is no fluctuating magnetic flux, there is no voltage difference across a closed loop. But when there is a changing magnetic field, a voltage is induced within a closed loop known as the electromotive force or the EMF. There are two types of electromotive forces: the motional EMF and the transformer EMF. In motional EMF the magnetic field is kept steady while the loop is moved such that it cuts the …

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly attracting the attention of healthcare professionals for their potential to assist in diagnostic assessments, which could alleviate the strain on the healthcare system caused by a high patient load and a shortage of providers. For LLMs to be effective in supporting diagnostic assessments, it is essential that they closely replicate the standard diagnostic procedures used by clinicians. In this paper, we specifically examine the diagnostic assessment processes described in the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for major depressive disorder (MDD) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We investigate various …
Non-Catalytic Direct Partial Oxidation Of Methane To Methanol In A Wall-Coated Microreactor, Kelly Cohen
Non-Catalytic Direct Partial Oxidation Of Methane To Methanol In A Wall-Coated Microreactor, Kelly Cohen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This project used an integrated mixer-reactor-heat exchanger microtube scalable module for the non-catalytic direct partial oxidation of methane in natural gas to methanol at elevated pressures (70-95 bar), reaction temperatures of 380-460C, reactant methane:air ratios of 0.5-4.4 and reaction zone residence times on the order of 1 min. Currently, methane in remote locations is often flared in large quantities rather than transported or converted to the more easily transportable methanol. However, if this gaseous methane were converted to liquid methanol at the wellhead, it could be transported in ways other than pipeline or used onsite.
Additionally, methane is currently converted …

Optimizing Underground Construction And Plan Management For The Mong Duong Coal Mine, Vietnam, Phi Hung Nguyen, Thi Kim Thanh Nguyen, Duc Hung Pham, Quang Phuc Le, Thai Tien Dung Vu
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Mong Duong mine’s output objective is 1.5 million tons, which requires approximately 10,000 m of tunnel excavation each year. Because of the complicated geological features, the actual work is vastly different, necessitating regular changes in design and technical approaches, as well as plans for material supply, money, and staff. On the other hand, office personnel visit the construction site to update the work status after each report, and the department head and board of directors make choices on development and execution. This process takes time because it is carried out manually. As a result, a solution to support the optimization …
