Long-Range Inertia Prediction Considering Contemporary Evolution Of Power Grid Networks, Peter M. Makolo
Long-Range Inertia Prediction Considering Contemporary Evolution Of Power Grid Networks, Peter M. Makolo
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Reduced network inertia due to high penetration levels of non-synchronous generators in modern power systems is becoming a pressing issue. As a result, very quick inertial responses are observed after contingency events in networks. Due to quick inertial responses, there is a practically very limited time interval for control actions in real-time. Thus, system operators need to understand the prior inertia values to plan, control, and operate the network securely. Long-range forecasting of the network's inertia values, in contrast to short-range forecasting techniques, can pinpoint when the network is most likely to be vulnerable in a reasonable time ahead. Thus, …

Modeling, Design, And Laboratory Testing Of A Passive Friction Seismic Metamaterial Base Isolator (Pfsmbi), Shayan Khosravi, Mohsen Amjadian
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on the theoretical and analytical modeling of a novel seismic isolator termed the Passive Friction Mechanical Metamaterial Seismic Isolator (PFSMBI) system, which is designed for seismic hazard mitigation in multi-story buildings. The PFSMBI system consists of a lattice structure composed of a series of identical small cells interconnected by layers made of viscoelastic materials. The main function of the lattice is to shift the fundamental natural frequency of the building away from the dominant frequency of earthquake excitations by creating low-frequency bandgaps (FBGs) below 20 Hz. In this configuration, each unit cell contains an inner resonator that …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study demonstrates for the first time, graphene grown directly on the iron-rich surfaces of bulk 8620 low-alloy and 1018 mild steel by chemical vapor deposition, a key step toward developing thin graphene coatings with strong graphene-steel bonding. Low growth temperatures of 660 °C–680 °C, were used to manipulate the steel's carbon solubility, confining carbon diffusion and microstructural transformations to the surface regions, with the bulk relatively unchanged. For 1018, a growth temperature of 680 °C resulted in a multilayer graphene coating with 80 % coverage. The alloying elements in 8620 improved graphene formation by influencing the surface microstructure transformations …

Improving Rupture Status Prediction For Intracranial Aneurysms Using Wall Shear Stress Informatics, Jingfeng Jiang, Mostafa Rezaeitaleshmahalleh, Jinshan Tang, Joseph Gemmette, Aditya Pandey
Michigan Tech Publications
BACKGROUND: Wall shear stress (WSS) plays a crucial role in the natural history of intracranial aneurysms (IA). However, spatial variations among WSS have rarely been utilized to correlate with IAs' natural history. This study aims to establish the feasibility of using spatial patterns of WSS data to predict IAs' rupture status (i.e., ruptured versus unruptured). METHODS: "Patient-specific" computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for 112 IAs; each IA's rupture status was known from medical records. Recall that CFD-simulated hemodynamics data (wall shear stress and its derivatives) are located on unstructured meshes. Hence, we mapped WSS data from an unstructured …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Lithology identification lays the foundation for fine-scale reservoir evaluation. However, traditional identification methods generally utilize the interactive relationships between only 2‒3 logging parameters, suffering from low utilization rates of logging information and low identification accuracy for strata with small differences in logging responses. This seriously restricts the effects of old well reexamination. The efficient, intelligent CatBoost classification algorithm can fully mine the correlations between multi-source logging information and lithology. Methods This study investigated the Jurassic sandstone and mudstone reservoirs in the Lunnan area, Xinjiang, China. Using five logging parameters determined through sensitivity analysis, i.e., natural gamma-ray value, spontaneous potential, …

Balancing Anarchy And Efficiency: Partial Team Formations And Learning In Potential Games, Muhammed Sayin
Balancing Anarchy And Efficiency: Partial Team Formations And Learning In Potential Games, Muhammed Sayin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Non-cooperative multi-agent learning, focusing on individual rationality (anarchy), often falls short in achieving system-wide efficiency in potential games, a class of games with applications in decentralized control and optimization. On the other hand, cooperative approaches prioritize system efficiency but often via global coordination, which could be impractical, e.g., for large-scale and less controlled environments. To address this dilemma, we propose a novel framework that introduces partial team formations, allowing team members with shared objectives to coordinate their actions while maintaining team-wise rationality for improved system-wide efficiency without the burden of global coordination. We model such interactions as a multi-team game …

Accurately predicting the energy consumption plays a vital role in battery electric buses (BEBs) route planning and deployment. Based on the algebraic derivative estimation, we present a novel method to forecast the energy consumption in real time. In contrast to the mainstream machine-learning-based methods, the proposed method does not require access to the historical energy consumption data. It eliminates the time-consuming and computationally expensive offline training. Consequently, its prediction performance is not constrained by the quantity and quality of the training data. Moreover, the method can swiftly adapt to new situations not included in the previous driving cycles, which makes …

High voltage (∼2 kV) Al0.64Ga0.36N-channel high electron mobility transistors were fabricated with an on-resistance of ∼75 Ω. mm (∼21 mΩ. cm2). Two field plates of variable dimensions were utilized to optimize the breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage reached >3 kV (tool limit) before passivation however it reduced to ∼2 kV after Si3N4 surface passivation and field plate deposition. The breakdown voltage and on-resistance demonstrated a strong linear correlation in a scattered plot of ∼50 measured transistors. The fabricated transistors were electrically characterized and benchmarked against the state-of-the-art high-voltage (> 1 kV) …

Thickener control is a key area of focus in the minerals processing industry, particularly due to its crucial role in water recovery, which is essential for sustainable resource management. The highly nonlinear nature of thickener dynamics presents significant challenges in modeling and optimization, making it a strong candidate for advanced surrogate modeling techniques. However, traditional data-driven approaches often require extensive datasets, which are frequently unavailable, especially in new plants or unexplored operational domains. Developing data-driven models without enough data representative of the dynamics of the system could result in incorrect predictions and consequently, unstable response of the controller. This paper …
