Condition Assessment Of Bolted Connections In Steel Structures Using Deep Learning, Faezeh Jafari, Sattar Dorafshan Jan 2025

Condition Assessment Of Bolted Connections In Steel Structures Using Deep Learning, Faezeh Jafari, Sattar Dorafshan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Steel structure connections are prone to bolt loosening and subsequent loss of strength or stability if not inspected periodically. Use of noncontact sensing and artificial intelligence can substantially increase the safety and efficiency of these inspections; however, the existing defect detection models do not account for variability of defects in both missing and loosened bolt connections. Furthermore, the performance of available deep learning models can be substantially diminished due to the presence of background noise in images of real structures. Finding these defects could be even more difficult in highway steel structures due to the complex and continuously changing nature …

Transient Temperature Measurements In A Ballistic Impact Experiment On A Thermoplastic Composite Material, Alexander I.G. Savadelis, Bryan E. Schmidt Jan 2025

Transient Temperature Measurements In A Ballistic Impact Experiment On A Thermoplastic Composite Material, Alexander I.G. Savadelis, Bryan E. Schmidt

Faculty Scholarship

Dynamic impact tests were conducted on thermoplastic composite laminates over an impact velocity range spanning the penetration velocity threshold, 88% of the penetration velocity, and 34% of the penetration velocity of the test panels. The primary objective was to record temperature increases that could affect the material properties of the composite during an impact event, and if so, provide guidance to predictive models which may account for such temperature rises. Observations from a combination of high-speed visible light photogrammetry coupled with high-speed infrared thermography indicate that it is highly unlikely that the composite reaches the glass transition temperature of 147°C …

Sensing Rotational Direction Using Paramagnetic Nanoparticles For Gyroscopic Applications, Jacob C. Pung Jan 2025

Sensing Rotational Direction Using Paramagnetic Nanoparticles For Gyroscopic Applications, Jacob C. Pung

Masters Theses

Gyroscopes have long been used for measuring an object’s angular orientation. Methods range from mechanical spinning disks to oscillating spring-mass systems. However, previous gyroscopes can suffer from high maintenance or fragility. A recently invented novel gyroscope aims to curb these restrictions through the use of ferrofluid.

This thesis proposes a new method of modeling and measuring the signals from the novel gyroscopic device. Rather than simply measuring the device’s average current consumption via slow RMS measurements, an attempt was made to model the voltage amplitude at any time. This allows a faster examination of both the changing magnitude and phase …

Comparison Of Milling Cutting Forces In Synthetic And Biological Cancellous Bone, Matthew Christopher Hartwell Jan 2025

Comparison Of Milling Cutting Forces In Synthetic And Biological Cancellous Bone, Matthew Christopher Hartwell

Masters Theses

In many orthopedic and dental interventions, the cutting and removal of bone is necessary. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that the tools used during these procedures are designed and tested with biological bone or a bone surrogate material that machines the same way as biological bone. To avoid the cost, hazard, and inconsistency of biological cadaveric bone or animal models, many biological engineering firms use bone surrogate material made of glass fiber filled epoxy and polyurethane foam. Although these materials may mimic the elongation of cortical and cancellous bone, respectively, the match of machinability of the bone is …

Exploration Of Energy Efficient Location Based Routing Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks, Huthiafa Q. Qadori, Idris Abubakar Umar, Mohammed Khalaf

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Few routing protocols designed for wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been adopted for commercial use in today's technology. This is because when designing the protocols, there is a need to trade-off some features to improve others, but for some designs, these compromises are deemed adamant especially when resources are constrained. An Ideal sensor node is expected to have a small code size capable of coordinating communication activities with the least energy possible. This survey studies some energy-efficient location-based routing protocols that were proposed over the years, with a key interest in factors influencing energy utilization, as it is the most …

A new proliferation of optical instruments that can be attached to towers over or within ecosystems, or ‘proximal’ remote sensing, enables a comprehensive characterization of terrestrial ecosystem structure, function, and fluxes of energy, water, and carbon. Proximal remote sensing can bridge the gap between individual plants, site-level eddy-covariance fluxes, and airborne and spaceborne remote sensing by providing continuous data at a high-spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we review recent advances in proximal remote sensing for improving our mechanistic understanding of plant and ecosystem processes, model development, and validation of current and upcoming satellite missions. We provide current best practices for data availability …

Undergraduate computer science programs worldwide struggle to attract and retain underrepresented students for many reasons. Culture, stereotype threats, uneven gender and racial representations, lack of role models, and uncertain career prospects for minority groups are among the many reasons behind this situation. Many computer science programs are trying to change course through strategies to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aimed at improving outreach, recruitment, admissions, and retention of underrepresented students. EDI approaches may also include modifications to the undergraduate computer science curriculum. However, if not properly planned, these modifications risk amplifying existing stereotypes rather than producing positive change [38]. …

Multi-Uav Deployment And Collaborative Offloading For Large-Scale Iot Systems, Zhiqin Huang, Tianying Lu, Zheyi Chen

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In large-scale internet-of-things (IoT) systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) can alleviate the performance constraints on end IoT devices. However, due to the uneven distribution of IoT devices and inefficient problem-solving, how to efficiently perform computation offloading in large-scale IoT systems is a major challenge. Existing solutions generally cannot fit into dynamic multi-UAV scenarios, causing inefficient resource utilization and excessive response delay. To address these important challenges, this paper proposes a novel multi-UAV deployment and collaborative offloading (MUCO) method for large-scale IoT systems. A UAV deployment scheme based on constrained K-Means clustering is designed to …
