Two-phase configurations can address the urgent demand for effective heat dissipation solutions in Naval power and energy systems. A better understanding of thermal transport processes in phase-change flows is critical for developing novel two-phase design tools for naval scientists and engineers. This study investigates interfacial phase change and flow dynamics during condensation flow through numerical simulations. An enhanced phase change model, incorporating a mass transfer intensity coefficient dependent on condensation film thickness, is implemented for vertical downflow condensation. A two-dimensional homogeneous two-phase Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes model, coupled with the Shear-Stress Transport k-ω turbulence model, is employed. The developed solver is thoroughly …

A Study Of The Parameters Involved In Nir Sintering Of Silver Microparticle-Based, Pad-Printed Features, Jonah Clement Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the effectiveness of pad printing and near-infrared (NIR) sintering for producing conductive silver microparticle traces. A new pad printer was set up, and silver inks with varying concentrations of silver particles (17.5 %v/v, 20 %v/v, and 25 %v/v) were manufactured, printed, and sintered. The study identified sintering time and silver concentration as the most influential parameters affecting resistivity, with the best result of 8.73 × 10⁻⁷ Ω·m achieved using 25 %v/v ink sintered for 3 seconds at full power. Although resistivity continued to decrease at this maximum sintering duration, further optimization of parameters, including NIR bulb distance …

This study demonstrates the 100 g scale manufacture of a plutonium alloy that ages at an accelerated rate. The resulting alloy ages six times faster than typical weapons-grade plutonium due to the addition of 238Pu. As a major innovation, the process involved using a partial direct oxide reduction technique. This method was achieved by developing a new, complex geometry stirrer using additive manufacturing to reduce the 238Pu oxide and efficiently incorporate it into weapons-grade plutonium metal. The material was then purified by molten salt extraction and electrorefining before being alloyed with gallium. The alloy was then cold-rolled and …

The impact resistance and residual compression strength of two types of glass fiber/ polyethylene terephthalate composites are investigated in this research project. The first materials are glass fiber/ polyethylene terephthalate glycol (GF/PRTG) and the second material is glass fiber/ amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (GF/PETa). Both matrix materials are ductile thermoplastic polymers. The ductility of the matrix is expected to improve the impact resistance of the composites. The advantage of the first material is higher ductility and improved fire resistance, and the advantage of the second material is high bonding strength with the reinforcing fiber glass. Both matrixes and low cost engineered …

Current folding table designs are made to be lightweight, but the table surface made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) can break and is not repairable. Our team designed the DuraFold Premium as an alternative to the traditional folding tables. The table surface and legs use a sandwich construction consisting of top and bottom face sheets made with carbon and glass reinforcing fibers in an epoxy resin system. In between the two face sheets is a honeycomb core material. This approach results in the DuraFold Premium being extremely durable while remaining lightweight. Over the past academic year, our team has been …

A Novel Fixture Development To Characterize Compression After Impact Damage Of Unidirectional Thermoplastic Composite Laminates, Matt K. Ficker, Dominic L. Perez, Noah Misukanis, Luke E. Poglayen, Jacob Kosmoski
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Impact testing of unidirectional thermoplastic composite materials is a challenge due to the Mode I shear of the primary tows on the impact side. Thermoplastic composite products manufactured using laminate stacking are bonded together with films of polymer on both sides of oriented fiber in typically a cross-ply or quasi-isotropic stack. The resulting failure from the distortion field imposed by a hemispherical tup is debonding along the interface between layer 1 and layer 2 oriented in the layer 1 direction from impact site to edge of panel. This failure mode results when the sample is too small relative to the …

In-Situ Void Formation During Liquid Composite Molding For Preformed Warp, Weft, And Alternating Orientation Rtm Samples, Tanner Cal Garrett
Theses and Dissertations
Carbon fiber reinforced parts are utilized by the transportation industry due to being strong yet lightweight. The highest quality parts are made using carbon fiber (CF) pre-impregnated with resin processed in an autoclave to reduce void content. The autoclave process is expensive and takes up a large amount of space, so liquid composite molding (LCM) is a less expensive alternative. The parts produced using LCM can be manufactured to rival the mechanical performance of parts made with pre-preg in an autoclave, but concerns remain over voids. Most research pertaining to void formation has been done ex-situ by either micro-CT or …

Surface-Texture Fabrication Of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Using Focused Ion-Beam Machining, Kameron M. Woodruff
Theses and Dissertations
Focused ion-beam machining (FIBM), a precise form of micro-machining, was tested for feasibility in the manufacturing of microscopic dimples in zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), a wear resistant ceramic used in artificial joint replacements. The interaction between the ion-beam and the ceramic was characterized in terms of material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness, and notable irregularities (e.g. pitting, steps at vertical faces). These characteristics were used to design and machine patterns of microscopic dimples for tribological testing. The dimple size and pattern area were limited due to a slow MRR and high cost of milling. No significant difference in the coefficient of …

Investigation Of Temperature Control's Effects In Additive Friction Stir Deposition Of Al 7050-T7451, Jason Noah Glenn
Theses and Dissertations
Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) is a friction stir based process that includes the addition of material extruding through a bore in the center of the rotating tool. The deformation of the material from the tool rotation and high pressures result in fully dense depositions printed at very high rates with forged like mechanical properties. While deposition properties of varying alloys have been increasingly published, little work has been done investigating control of the process and as with all additive processes, consistency and predictability are of significant concern before implementation can occur. One common control method implemented in Friction Stir …

Michigan Tech Publications
Purpose. Selecting patients with high-risk intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is of clinical importance. Recent work in machine learning-based (ML) predictive modeling has demonstrated that lesion-specific hemodynamics within IAs can be combined with other information to provide critical insights for assessing rupture risk. However, how the adoption of blood rheology models (i.e., Newtonian and Non-Newtonian blood models) may influence ML-based predictive modeling of IA rupture risk has not been investigated. Methods and Materials. In this study, we conducted transient CFD simulations using Newtonian and non-Newtonian rheology (Carreau-Yasuda [CY]) models on a large cohort of 'patient-specific' IA geometries (>100) under pulsatile flow conditions to …
Measurement Of Groundwater And Contaminant Fluxes In Fractures Using A Combined System Of Passive Flux Meter And Multiport Sampler, Qasim Raza Khan
Measurement Of Groundwater And Contaminant Fluxes In Fractures Using A Combined System Of Passive Flux Meter And Multiport Sampler, Qasim Raza Khan
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Groundwater and contaminant movement in fractured rock aquifers is highly variable. Its dependence on fracture apertures and orientation as well as fracture network interconnectivity is not well understood. This poses a challenge to the measurement of groundwater and contaminant fluxes, especially when using open-hole techniques, which significantly alter natural flow conditions by connecting different fractures along an open borehole or a well. In this work, the use of Fractured Rock Passive Flux Meter (FRPFM) with invisible tracer and visible dye component to measure groundwater fluxes and identify geometric fracture parameters is explored through laboratory experiments. The invisible tracer component results …
