Leveling Up: Differentiating Library Research And Apa Instruction For Online Students Into Different Levels And Modes, Josette M. Kubicki Mar 2021

Leveling Up: Differentiating Library Research And Apa Instruction For Online Students Into Different Levels And Modes, Josette M. Kubicki

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Over two and a half years, the Department of Teaching and Leading liaison librarian has evolved her virtual instruction to graduate online students by scaffolding it into different levels. What started as advocating for an optional one-shot webinar for groups of students in their asynchronous Master of Education program’s seminal course has organically grown into three different library instruction levels throughout the program: introductory (level 1), intermediate (level 2), and advanced (level 3), and a few levels for APA instruction. These days, all students start on the same level playing field by undertaking level 1 library instruction and level 1 …

Tl;Dw: Creating Information Literacy Instruction Students Will Watch From Start To Finish, Christina C. Wray, Renee Cole Montgomery

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In 2018 the University of Central Florida Instruction Librarians developed a new series of webinars to help students develop the information literacy skills they need to succeed but may not be explicitly taught in the classroom. Known as Research Tips Tuesdays once a month a 40-minute webinar was hosted. This resulted in LOTS of interest…and little follow through. How could we offer this content in a way that met our students’ where they are AND the bandwidth they have to devote to informal learning?

Fall of 2020 brought new approaches to library instruction across the board, and especially to the …

What’S In It For Me? Use Science History To Make The Truth Compelling, Henrietta Verma, Heather Darling-Cortes Mar 2021

What’S In It For Me? Use Science History To Make The Truth Compelling, Henrietta Verma, Heather Darling-Cortes

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

We think of people of antiquity as leaning on superstition and traditions when it came to making decisions large and small. Even as long ago as the Roman empire, however, there were precursors to modern professionals such as civil engineers, and these people needed real solutions to vexing problems. Somehow, society slowly—very slowly—began leaning more toward the methodical thinking and working styles of these early scientists. In this program, science teacher Heather Darling-Cortes of M.S. 577 in Brooklyn, New York, will look at how the world at large and individuals became willing to move from reliance on familiar beliefs and …

Reloading Gen Z, Mary Margaret Cornwell

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

With students becoming increasingly tech-savvy, how can librarians teach online resources to a generation of digital natives and keep their attention? By leaning into their love of how-to videos and quick information! This presentation will discuss how to make information literacy instructions a little more enjoyable using popular online streaming and information sites, like YouTube and Wikipedia. For example, we will examine Wired “AutoComplete Interviews” and Vanity Fair “… Teaches Slang” videos to show keyword versus natural language searching and discuss how they use each one to different effect. Attendees will leave with the tools to engage in discussions of …

Virtual Engagement Using Active Learning., Kristen Bailey, Annierra Matthews, Florence Tang, Stephanie Miranda, Beth Perry

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In order to teach information literacy skills in an online library instruction session, a bit of pre-planning involving student/librarian engagement through active learning techniques is always helpful, if not necessary. Sarah Parramore (2019) discusses active learning techniques and information literacy:

Active learning techniques are the topics that are dominating the higher education scene. Not only are they the focus on college and university campuses, but academic libraries are also taking notice and integrating these techniques into their lessons on information literacy. (p. 476)

Using active learning techniques to increase student engagement works well for face-to-face classes, but how well does …

Faculty-Librarian Information Literacy Collaboration, Kimmarie W. Lewis

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Faculty and librarian collaboration is key in the quest for information literacy. As part of the reaccreditation effort at Lord Fairfax Community College -- a two-year institution in northwestern Virginia -- the QEP Leadership Team sought LFCC Librarians’ assistance in a multifaceted, 5-year, information literacy initiative. This effort included the addition of a librarian to the all-faculty QEP Leadership Team, the redesign of composition courses, and professional development through a new LFCC program: “Seeking the Truth: Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Mini-Grants.”

Data obtained from the mini-grant program show that LFCC faculty engaged in this multifaceted initiative gained an appreciation for collaboration with …

Relationships Between Expressive And Receptive Language Ability And Play Initiation In 2-Year-Olds, Jessica Glasshoff Mar 2021

Relationships Between Expressive And Receptive Language Ability And Play Initiation In 2-Year-Olds, Jessica Glasshoff

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

For most young children, social initiations develop during natural play contexts, along with language. However, not all children learn language typically from an early age. At 2 years of age, these children are generally referred to as “late talkers” or as having “late language emergence” (LLE). LLE usually involves between 10-15 percent of 2-year-olds. Delayed language development is associated with delays in play sophistication; however, little is known about the association between LLE and child initiations during play. The purpose of the study was to further determine the relationship between receptive and expressive language proficiency and play initiation for toddlers. …

Impact Of Interdisciplinary Collaborative Behavior Coach Training For School Counselors, Social Workers, And Psychologists, Kristen Abueg

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Children’s social and emotional skill deficits can be predictors of a lifetime of academic and behavioral challenges and mental health concerns. Young children with challenging behaviors are at a higher risk for substance abuse and school failure. Behavior coaching is a current focus in many schools and is being utilized to support school-wide systems and teachers in relationship to students with behavior and mental health concerns. The purpose of this descriptive quantitative study was to investigate the impact of interdisciplinary collaborative behavior coach training for school counselors, social workers, and psychologists in a Midwest suburban school district. Interdisciplinary collaborative behavior …

The Influence Of An Early Childhood Endorsement Program On Early Childhood Leadership Competencies, Kanyon Chism

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The call to improve high-quality educational opportunities for children ages birth – eight has received increased attention and federal and local funding opportunities have expanded to provide additional early childhood classrooms and to implement family engagement practices. Unfortunately, systems of support for principals aimed at increasing knowledge and skills necessary to lead an aligned Preschool – third-grade system within an elementary school remain relatively sparse. The purpose of this study is to examine the alignment between an early childhood endorsement program and early childhood leadership competencies.

This study will examine the perceptions of school leaders participating in an early childhood …

Influences On The Implementation Of Guided Play Practices In Kindergarten: A Grounded Theory Study, Amy Schmidtke Mar 2021

Influences On The Implementation Of Guided Play Practices In Kindergarten: A Grounded Theory Study, Amy Schmidtke

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The professional capacity of a kindergarten teacher is central to the implementation of developmentally appropriate practices that support children’s learning and development. Evidence indicates that a teacher’s professional capacity is influenced through experiences with leadership, professional learning, and collaboration. Although research clearly supports the positive impact of play experiences for young children, the current educational climate does not provide teachers with the confidence or the structural supports needed to actualize play in kindergarten classrooms. The findings demonstrate what influences kindergarten teachers to implement guided play practices in their classrooms. The implications provide insight as to which elements of leadership, professional …

Barriers To Reducing The Assistive Technology Use For Students With Autism As Perceived By Special Education Teachers In Saudi Arabia, Othman Ahmed Alasmari Mar 2021

Barriers To Reducing The Assistive Technology Use For Students With Autism As Perceived By Special Education Teachers In Saudi Arabia, Othman Ahmed Alasmari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Prior research has indicated that assistive technology (AT) devices and services can improve the functional capability of students with autism, which includes multiple areas of student needs, such as communication, accessibility, organization, sound, sight, academic skills, mobility, and memory. Nevertheless, concerns persist as to how AT devices are being implemented in the classroom; this is because teachers are experiencing a variety of barriers to using AT (Hew & Brush, 2007). The purpose of this study is to explore the barriers affecting Saudi teachers’ use of AT for teaching children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study’s sample consists of 85 …

Framing The Role Of Higher Education In Sustainable Development: A Case Study Analysis, Suzanna Elmassah, Marwa Biltagy, Doaa Gamal

All Works

Purpose

Higher education institutions (HEIs) should play a fundamental role in achieving the international 2030 sustainable development (SD) agenda. Quality education is the fourth of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), and one of the targets related to this is to ensure that by 2030 all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote SD. Therefore, the SDGs provide a motive for HEIs to integrate SD concepts into their day-to-day practices. This study aims to introduce a framework for HEIs’ sustainable development assessment. Such a framework guides HEIs and educational leaders to support their countries’ commitments to achieving the SDGs. …
