The Public-School Environment And Day Treatment Programming Perceived Positive Environmental Supports As Antecedent Stimuli In A Public-School Day Treatment Classroom, Jessica Ann Clark
The Public-School Environment And Day Treatment Programming Perceived Positive Environmental Supports As Antecedent Stimuli In A Public-School Day Treatment Classroom, Jessica Ann Clark
All Theses And Dissertations
The physical environment of a classroom can serve to meet the unique needs of students, but the focus on the specific tangible elements of the classroom is limited. There are minimal guidelines that inform teachers as to how to use these elements of the environment in teaching practices. The decision-making process for these situations is often left to inexperienced teachers and is not fully utilized as a resource within the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative research is to examine the environmental factors that contribute to a positive learning environment for public school students who exhibit challenging behavior. Based on …

Zea E-Books Collection
Parasites are organisms that live inside or on another species, called the host. Parasites depend on their hosts for food and a place to live. They may harm the host in small or large ways. Parasitism is the most common mode of life on Earth. Humans, other animals, and all plants have parasites, usually two or more kinds. Even parasites can have parasites. There are millions of species of parasites, and scientists discover new ones every day. Parasite specimens are stored in museums all around the world. One of the world’s largest collections is in the H. W. Manter Laboratory …
Solution-Focused Zone Of Proximal Development: A Vygotskyan Contribution To Solution-Focused Therapy, Stephanie Freeman
Solution-Focused Zone Of Proximal Development: A Vygotskyan Contribution To Solution-Focused Therapy, Stephanie Freeman
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
This theoretical paper explores the possibility of combining principles of solution-focused therapy with theories of learning and development by the psychologist Lev Vygotsky, whose thinking led to the development of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory. The similarities and complementaries between these traditions merit attention. Further, SFT has been characterized as an eclectic and constantly evolving approach, the theoretical and philosophical foundations of which are somewhat scattered. Hence, the article attempts to redefine the philosophical and theoretical location of SFT through a “Vygotskyan and CHAT-informed” lens. Since the emphasis in SFT seems to be on the identification and detailed description of the client’s …

School Improvement Plan, Taylor Anderson
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Students in schools display a variety of behaviors. Some of these behaviors being negative, and some of these behaviors being positive. This school improvement plan will give you a small glimpse at a Title 1 elementary school with a goal of decreasing the amount of times a student has to be removed from the classroom, or receives a first responder call. A first responder call is when an adult in the building has to call for additional adult support due to a student's behaviors. This project will start with a literature review of multiple articles discussing social skills, and the …

Examining Coaching Models, Relationships, Roles, And Effects, Rebecca Collins
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This literature review looks at the different coaching models, how relationships effect successful coaching, the different roles a coach may experience, and the effects coaching can have on teachers and students. Over the past 10-15 years coaching in education has become a hot topic (Heineke, 2013). However, there is not much research or studies on the actual implementation of a coaching program and how it affects the students and the teachers. In this paper coaching roles takes on two meanings: what the coach does during a coaching session/meeting and what type of “hats” the coach wears during the time they …

Without proper training and support, educators are unable to incorporate technology tools and resources into their lessons effectively. Technologies are being used on a daily basis within the school systems, which has drastically increased …
The Effects Of Technology On Reading Fluency In A First Grade Summer School Classroom, Bailey A. Kennedy
The Effects Of Technology On Reading Fluency In A First Grade Summer School Classroom, Bailey A. Kennedy
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The purpose of this action research project was to determine if the technology app EPIC! is more effective in helping first-grade students increase their oral reading fluency skills compared to a teacher-assisted, non-technological intervention. Before the interventions began, the students completed three oral timed reading passages at the first-grade level by FASTbridge. This score was used as a baseline for the data. The intervention lasted for two weeks. The experimental group completed stories on the application EPIC! for 15 minutes each session, while the control group completed research based educational games with the researcher. Both were done in addition to …
Using Physical Activity To Improve Reading Comprehension, Jensen Flanigan
Using Physical Activity To Improve Reading Comprehension, Jensen Flanigan
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Student reading proficiency lags grade-level expectations in the majority of the United States. Much research has demonstrated the moderating impact of student motivation on reading scores. The purpose of this action research was to study the effects of physical activity on reading motivation and reading comprehension, with a special focus on readers at risk for reading deficiencies as identified by FAST testing. The research was carried out on eighteen third grade students in rural Iowa, seven of whom were at risk for reading deficiency. The use of physical activity had a positive effect on both reading motivation and reading comprehension, …

Effects Of Growth Mindset, Jessica Courtney
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Growth mindset and mindset theory is a topic that is explored around the world and in different levels of education and careers. However, there are contradictive studies and many misconceptions about what growth mindset and interventions can achieve. Research leads scholars to believe that academic achievement may not be a direct result of growth mindset interventions, but it is also proven that motivation and self-efficacy are in fact improved. Research also shows that motivation and self-efficacy are required for academic growth. This literature review contains information about mindset theory, important historical research for mindset theory, assumption, and common misconceptions as …
Evidence-Based Teaching Strategies For Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jasmin Williams
Evidence-Based Teaching Strategies For Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jasmin Williams
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The number of school-aged children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing over the past decades. As the students enter the education system, school districts and educators face challenges in meeting the academic needs of students with ASD. A 2014 report by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized that although ASD varies significantly in severity, it occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, and is almost five times more common among boys than girls. Thus, contemporary education professionals in all schools are likely to work with students with ASD (CDC, 2014). Teachers in …

Behavior As A Part Of Child Development: Changing The Response To Challenging Behavior In Young Children, Kelly Femi-Grand
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Challenging behavior among young children has gained more and more attention as early childhood programs look to address the issue of the high incidence rate of suspensions and expulsions among the youngest learners. In an effort to decrease the number of suspensions and expulsions in early childhood settings, there has been a shift from reacting to the challenging behaviors being exhibited to teaching children social-emotional skills in order to appropriately react to new or overwhelming experiences. This literature review focuses on research that examines how to best support young children as they develop social-emotional skills and how to best support …

Incorporating Physical Activity Breaks Before Math Improves Students Overall On-Task Behavior, Larissa Surprenant
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The purpose of this action research study will focus on incorporating physical activity before math into a Kindergarten classroom, to help improve on-task behavior. The study was conducted over a four-week period in one Kindergarten classroom. Data was collected to determine if physical activity or brain breaks help improve students' on-task behavior during the math mini-lesson. Two weeks consisted of the students not receiving the brain break/physical activity intervention and the next two weeks consisted of implementing the brain break/physical activity intervention. After the four-week trial, students showed increased on-task behavior after completing the brain break/physical activity. The conclusion stated …
