The Impact Of Cooperative Learning, Bethany Reinhard
The Impact Of Cooperative Learning, Bethany Reinhard
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Cooperative learning has been around for decades. It can be highly effective in increasing students' academic achievement, motivation, engagement, positive attitudes, social and emotional aspects, and much more if implemented correctly. It can be difficult for educators to jump right in on using a new teaching strategy. Years of research has provided us with different perspectives and input of cooperative learning's effects and implementation strategies. This literature review contains information from peer reviewed, scholarly journals researching the history of cooperative learning, multiple different grouping techniques, aftermaths in both academic and social effects, the teacher's role, and the importance of collaboration. …

Phonemic Awareness And Phonics As An Integral Field To Early Emergent Reading Programs, Lea Kunkel
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The act of learning to read is one which is unnatural to the human brain, causing exponential stress for young learners, students acquiring a new language, or learning disabled. To alleviate the nidus which acquiring the ability to decipher literature may impose, continual research in learning to read has taken place. Research which has aimed to discover the best kept secrets, programs and strategies for helping early to emergent readers succeed. Within the literature review, the benefit of implementing phonemic awareness and phonics into early to emergent reading programs will be discovered. Including, how phonemic awareness and phonics arose in …
Rise Of Catholic Schools In The Global South And Implications For University Research, Quentin Wodon
Rise Of Catholic Schools In The Global South And Implications For University Research, Quentin Wodon
Journal of Catholic Education
Building on a presentation made at the closing plenary of OIEC’s World Congress in New York, this paper considers two trends affecting Catholic education globally and their potential implications for university research and programs in support of K12 schools. The first trend is the shift of enrollment in K12 Catholic education towards the global south and especially Africa in terms of the sheer number of students enrolled in schools. The second trend relates to the deepening learning crisis in K12 education affecting much of the developing world, and again especially Africa. These two trends have implications for university research and …

Organizational Climate In Schools Across The Archdiocese Of Detroit, Ben Pogodzinski, Anne Morris
Journal of Catholic Education
To help inform continuous improvement efforts across Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit (AOD), the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness Surveys were administered to parents, students, and faculty/staff across schools in the AOD during Winter 2018. This work sought to identify variation in responses across respondents and schools. Additionally, we sought to identify an association between the survey responses and enrollment trends across schools. Our findings show some significant differences in responses across the domains of the survey as well as across respondent group. The initial analysis found no statistically significant association between measures of organizational climate and enrollment trends, …

No Good Options: Analysis Of Catholic School Reopening Plans In Fall 2020, Monica J. Kowalski, Stephen M. Ponisciak
Journal of Catholic Education
As schools across the country made decisions about how to safely reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Fall of 2020, Catholic schools reopened for in-person instruction more than surrounding public schools. This study analyzes published reopening plans from 136 Catholic schools in 18 different states to explore how schools reopened and how they communicated their plans. Results showed that Catholic schools mostly did not decide to reopen virtually, consistent with local health data trends and public school decisions. Rather, Catholic schools offered in-person education with health and safety protocols in place. Most schools in the sample did not communicate …

Laudato Si’: A Prophetic Message, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator
Journal of Catholic Education
A mounting body of evidence demonstrates that our generation and our civilization teeter on the brink of a man-made disaster of global scale. Climate change stands as the defining question of our century. Calls to global action are as strident and passionate as the enormity of the situation is grave and consequential. Of particular significance is Pope Francis’ encyclical letter Laudato Si’ on the care for our Common Home. This article discusses some of the main messages from Laudato Si’ including its call for pedagogical models of “ecological education” or “environmental education”. The article is adapted with minor modifications from …
Latino Family Engagement In A Network Of Catholic Bilingual Schools, Gabrielle Oliveira, Eunhye Cho, Olivia Barbieri
Latino Family Engagement In A Network Of Catholic Bilingual Schools, Gabrielle Oliveira, Eunhye Cho, Olivia Barbieri
Journal of Catholic Education
In this article, we examine how a Network of Catholic Bilingual Schools (NCBS) serves Latino populations by examining the leadership’s narratives of the school services and outreach. By employing a survey with 16 principals in the NCBS, we argue that the rate of engagement is similar between Latino and non-Latino parents, although the nature of the activities varied. Despite the long-held belief that Latino parents are less likely to participate in schooling than non-Latino parents, we found that Latino parents committed their participation in schools across cultural, linguistic, or religious activities. We highlight how principals acknowledge and describe Latino families’ …

Modern kindergarten classrooms are academically rigorous learning environments with high expectations placed on young learners. Oftentimes, these students still receive an education based on traditional instructional strategies that no longer benefit and challenge young learners appropriately. This literature review examines the academic benefits of intentional classroom movement, kinesthetic learning, brain breaks and the impact they have on learning in the kindergarten setting. This literature review presents peer reviewed research studies conducted within the last ten years that investigate the most advantageous methods of movement incorporation in the classroom. The findings of this literature review conclude that, by increasing classroom movement, …

Create An Effective Mentoring Program Based On Universal Retention Rates In The United States: A School Improvement Plan, Kati Ploeger
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
High-quality teachers are shown to be the number-one factor for student achievement (Gujarati, 2012). One way school districts around the world can retain high-quality teachers is to place them in an induction or mentoring program as new teachers. A review of the literature was conducted to support the school improvement plan and examines retention rates across the United States. The research covers these main topics: mentoring, induction, professional development, teacher retention and mobility, new teacher experiences, and teacher evaluation. In response, a school improvement plan was created to establish a high-quality mentoring program outline, which establishes support and direction for …

Open licensing used in open educational resources allows for teaching and learning practices that are not possible with traditional copyright. There is a growing body of empirical research on open pedagogy. However, definitions and instantiations of open pedagogy vary in the literature. The purpose of this review was to systematically search and synthesize empirical findings on open pedagogy. In this, the definitions of open pedagogy across empirical reports were examined. Generally, open pedagogy was defined in the context of open licensing affordances; however, there were exceptions particularly when examining faculty experiences with open pedagogy. Synthesized findings may be used by …

Exploring Sources Of Engineering Teaching Self-Efficacy For Pre-Service Elementary Teachers, Ezgi Yesilyurt, Hasan Deniz, Erdogan Kaya
Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
Background: The Next Generation Science Standards (2013) put a special emphasis on engineering for K-12 science education. However, a significant number of elementary teachers still feel unprepared to integrate engineering into their science programs. It is, therefore, incumbent upon science educators to update their elementary science methods courses to accommodate engineering especially in the states which adopted the NGSS. In this study, we taught an engineering unit in an elementary science teaching methods course to examine what instructional components and learning experiences provided in the engineering unit enhance teachers’ engineering teaching self-efficacy beliefs. Our research questions addressed to what extent …

Diversifying the library workforce is challenging, with the graduation data of library and information science degrees not representing equity in demographics for diverse populations. Is this the reason for the lack of diversity among library staff or are recruitment practices not based on measurable performance standards? Both questions call upon the library and information science (LIS) profession to address diverse staffing issues to remedy these challenges.
