Faculty and Student Publications

Background: Episodic memory (EM) is particularly sensitive to pathological conditions and aging. In a neurocognitive context, the paired-associate learning (PAL) paradigm, which requires participants to learn and recall associations between stimuli, has been used to measure EM. The present study aimed to explore whether functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can be employed to determine cortical activity underlying encoding and retrieval. Moreover, we examined whether and how different aspects of task (i.e., novelty, difficulty) affects those cortical activities. Methods: Twenty-two male college students (age: M = 20.55, SD = 1.62) underwent a face-name PAL paradigm under 40-channel fNIRS covering fronto-parietal and middle …

The Preservice Teacher Self-Efficacy For Writing Inventory (Ptswi): A Tool For Measuring Beliefs About Writing, Tracey S. Hodges, Katherine Landau Wright, Erin M. Mctigue

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Teachers are often underprepared to teach writing, which can negatively impact the performance and attitudes of their students. In teacher preparation programs, one goal should be to specifically develop future teachers of writing. Focusing on self-efficacy beliefs, increasing preservice teachers’ confidence and preparedness for teaching writing could yield positive impacts on classroom writing instructional practices. Currently, tools to quantitatively measure self-efficacy for writing and writing instruction in preservice teachers are sparse, thus limiting teacher educators’ ability to understand the efficacy of writing instruction. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to gather evidence of score validity and reliability of …

Looking From Yesterday: Taylor University At 175, Ashley Chu, Tesia Jurasheck, Elizabeth Hammond, Alyssa Lykins

Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Scholarship

“Looking from Yesterday” is the title of Dr. Milo A. Rediger’s 1970 address about the importance of Christian higher education during times of uncertainty and volatility. In this address, Rediger references the “Taylor concept,” which included symbols of oil (light) and the cross as a hopeful sign to the world. Despite its delivery more than 50 years ago, the theme of Rediger’s address still rings true today as we continue to seek to fulfill the mission of Taylor University during our own challenging times. This year (2021-22), Taylor University will recognize its founding 175 years ago. This research project will …

The Effects Of The Gradual Release Of Responsibility Framework On Student Metacognition During Collaborative Work Time, Kyle R. Skillings

Education Masters Papers

Teachers are considering different models of instruction for student metacognition during work times. The questioning of student metacognition is a part of teaching, and it is something that can be recognized by making changes to allow students to recognize this. Finding more of an insight on how students think about thinking is the driving force to this research. This study was completed in a Southeastern Minnesota fifth grade classroom. For this study, the observer will implement a gradual release of responsibility framework during collaborative work time to determine the effects on participant metacognition. With metacognition as the focus, the observer …

This study used a survey format to understand the trauma-informed strategies and approaches that secondary teachers at one Midwest high school used when working with trauma-affected students. Specifically, the focus was on how teachers build relationships with students, teach coping skills, and implement individual supports when working with trauma-affected students. Teachers provided answers by answering multiple choice questions with the option to select multiple options for each question. The study found that most teachers use a variety of relationship building strategies with students. However, it also found that many of the general education teachers and special education teachers in settings …

Closing The Text Equity Gap: Using The Writing Pace Meeting To Increase Writing Practice And Performance, Brian Gogan Jul 2021

Closing The Text Equity Gap: Using The Writing Pace Meeting To Increase Writing Practice And Performance, Brian Gogan

Assessment Grants

This project measures the impact of an intervention on the quality of WMU first-year writing students’ peer feedback practices. This project builds on research that associates peer review practice with increased student success. Further, it extends a prior assessment, which suggests that the intervention was effective in increasing the average quantity of peer-review text produced by the bottom two quartiles of first-year writers at WMU. To assess quality, the project uses an established coding scheme to analyze 1,400 student-written comments exchanged by English 1050 students. A statistical analysis of pre-invention codes and post-intervention codes provides the basis for the assessment.

Geometric Analysis Leads To Adversarial Teaching Of Cybersecurity, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2021

Geometric Analysis Leads To Adversarial Teaching Of Cybersecurity, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As time goes, our civilization becomes more and more dependent on computers and therefore, more and more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Because of this threat, it is very important to make sure that computer science students -- tomorrow's computer professionals -- are sufficiently skilled in cybersecurity. In this paper, we analyze the need for teaching cybersecurity from the geometric viewpoint. We show that the corresponding geometric analysis leads to adversarial teaching -- an empirically effective but not-well-theoretically-understood approach, when the class is divided into sparring mini-teams that try their best to attack each other and defend from each other. Thus, our …
