An Active Learning Approach To Listening: The Coin Drop Activity, Ronda Leahy, Michael Tollefson Jul 2021

An Active Learning Approach To Listening: The Coin Drop Activity, Ronda Leahy, Michael Tollefson

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

There is considerable research examining listening, as it is an important skill. While listening skills are important, very little instructional time is devoted to developing those skills (Hopper, 2007). After completion of this activity, students are able to describe their own listening process and assess listening techniques. This activity works well to introduce the concept of listening and various components within the listening process. Students do not typically think of listening as a skill that they can improve. When we discuss the listening process, we can recall this activity to illustrate the connection between sensing and processing.

Stereotyping: An Open Conversation On The Establishment, Nature, And Impact Of Stereotypes On Society, Christina M. Van Essen Jul 2021

Stereotyping: An Open Conversation On The Establishment, Nature, And Impact Of Stereotypes On Society, Christina M. Van Essen

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Stereotypes are generalizations about groups of people that have impacted predominantly marginalized communities. We typically use stereotypes against a generalized other and some stereotypes have become part of our perceptual sets. This activity attempts to re-humanize stereotypes by confronting students with known stereotypes and makes students reflect on the impact of stereotypes on people’s lives.

A Precarious Prediction: Applying Predicted Outcome Value Theory To Classroom First Impressions, Joshua N. Westwick Jul 2021

A Precarious Prediction: Applying Predicted Outcome Value Theory To Classroom First Impressions, Joshua N. Westwick

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

First impressions have a significant impact on our initial and long-term communication interactions. The predicted outcome value theory suggests that the initial impressions we make upon meeting someone new stimulate us to make predictions about potential outcomes and values of continuing or terminating a relationship (Sunnafrank, 1986). This classroom activity provides an opportunity to explore predicted outcome value theory through application and discussion-based learning. Students have praised the activity and demonstrated growth in the learning outcomes.

This study investigated the development of leadership identity among six female undergraduate student-leaders in higher learning institutions (HLIs). Based on the hexagon and motivation to lead theories, the study focused on personal knowledge, beliefs and actions that female undergraduate student-leaders attach to their leadership identities. Furthermore, the study explored the perceived leadership motivational factors for female student-leaders in HLIs. The study employed a phenomenological interpretive approach to investigate the lived-experiences of female student-leaders related to their leadership identities and developments in three HLIs. The study noted that there are important roles played by parents, peers, teachers and religious institutions in …

Experiences And Perceptions Of Exchange Students Learning Online During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The Republic Of Korea: An Exploratory Descriptive Study, William H. Stewart, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools worldwide to suddenly transition to remote learning. The change forced students, who might not choose to take distance education courses, to adjust to a new way of completing their coursework. Further, this impacted certain student groups like exchange students more adversely since distance courses complicated academic exchanges by rendering short-term exchange students isolated on an empty campus in a foreign country, all while recently arriving to both. There are many intrinsic hardships to academic exchanges but there is a lack of research on exchange students' experiences learning online when immediately transitioning from face-to-face courses to …

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper reports the findings on motivational factors and challenges that student-mothers face in Tanzania’s HEIs (HEIs). Sixteen (16) student-mothers took part in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis facilitated data analysis. The study found that most of the student-mothers did not envisage having children while studying. The factors that influenced them to become mothers while studying included: ongoing university policies that allow female students to have children, assured support, health and age factors, religious …

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Measure Songwriting Self-Efficacy (Sses) With Secondary Music Students, Patrick K. Cooper Jul 2021

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Measure Songwriting Self-Efficacy (Sses) With Secondary Music Students, Patrick K. Cooper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social cognitive theory was developed to explain how individuals learn, in part, by witnessing the behavior of others. Self-efficacy is a construct within social cognitive theory which indicates the beliefs that an individual can be successful at a task under specific situational demands. The sources of self-efficacy include self-evaluating past experiences to predict future success, comparing our abilities to those around us, the verbal and social feedback we get from others, and the physiological feelings we experience when engaged in or thinking about the task. Measures of self-efficacy have been shown to be accurate predictors of successful learning outcomes, achievement, …

Principal Self-Efficacy And Its Relationship To District Climate, Nicole Gilmore-Silva Jul 2021

Principal Self-Efficacy And Its Relationship To District Climate, Nicole Gilmore-Silva

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The research demonstrating the role of the principal in influencing student achievement has grown substantially over the last decade. However, increased systems of accountability for meeting school improvement goals have impacted the principalship, leading to increased turnover rates in underperforming schools. Principals, in turn, have had to acquire new skill sets to address the increasingly complexities of the role.

Effective school leadership is an integral component of school change initiatives; however, the research on the antecedents to what leads to effective school leadership is worthy of more attention in educational research. Principal self-efficacy (PSE) and collective efficacy has surfaced in …

Prüfung: A Deconstruction Of Assessment Across Three Languages, Thomas Erich Benz Jul 2021

Prüfung: A Deconstruction Of Assessment Across Three Languages, Thomas Erich Benz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research aims at deconstructing and questioning certainties about assessment as an educational institution on its most fundamental levels. To achieve that, I am utilizing theoretical frameworks inspired by concepts on the existence of cultural and social capital, by artifact mediated cognition, and by a recently proposed discipline on pedagogy of assessment. The research operates with the application of narrative synthesis and network text analysis of material, on which they have not previously been used. As such, I aim to contribute to a methodological application of both methods on exam data, understood as the totality of curricular documents which govern …
