JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 30, 2021) – “Mixed Americans,” an exhibition featuring works by a diverse group of artists of mixed racial heritage, is on display at Tipton Gallery through Oct. 8.

A panel discussion and reception are planned this week in conjunction with the exhibit, which is presented by the East Tennessee State University Department of Art and Design.

JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 30, 2021) — East Tennessee State University’s federal TRIO Program has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive renewed funding for two of its programs, both for each of the next five years.

The Educational Talent Search Program was awarded $323,420 per year and will help middle and high school students prepare for and enter post-secondary education. In addition to current students, Talent Search also works with individuals to complete their education at the secondary or postsecondary level. The first year in the education professoriate is an ineluctably critical time to establish a pathway for long-term professional success mirroring a scholar’s commitment to positively influencing students, schools, and communities. For Black women, the distinguished dual marginalization that they endure based on race and gender creates challenges and opportunities during that important start to their career. Through Black feminist thought and portraiture’s intentional blurring of art, life, and scientific boundaries, two Black women tenure track faculty use their ‘pens as weapons’ to explicate the first-year professional experiences. Understanding The Relationship Between Resources In Institutional Characteristics And Student Mobilization In Higher Education Institutions, Michael R. Carhart

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In 2015, a national student organization called the Black Liberation Collective, composed of local student organizations at multiple institutions, initiated, led protests, and issued demands to institutions across the United States. The student organizations that mobilized occurred at institutions with more resources including higher endowments, tuition, and faculty wages. This study used cross-sectional data on 4-year public and private not-for-profit institutions from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System to investigate the institutional characteristics that predict student organizations that protested. Evidence indicates that institutions that are more selective and have larger enrollment sizes with higher percentages of undergraduate Black students and …

Arkansas Teachers’ Perception Of Factors That Influence Attrition In Their Profession, Lori A. Edgin

This phenomenological study highlighted the perceptions of Arkansas teacher who have exited the profession pre-retirement. The study examined the perceptions of former educators as to the impact of both organizational and personal factors on their decision to leave the profession. The sample for this study was former educators in Arkansas who left the profession pre-retirement. Using a phenomenological approach, each selected participant was involved in an in-depth interview and the researcher transcribed, coded, and synthesized the interviews in an effort to understand the shared experiences of former educators who exit the profession pre-retirement.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought restraints into people’s activities. Consequently, during the pandemic, the school guidance and counseling services should be conducted online. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the types of online media frequently used by school counselors in classical guidance and individual or group counseling, as well as the rationale. This descriptive quantitative study involved 106 school counselors and used an Online Media Usage questionnaire to obtain the data. The results suggest that Google Form and Google Classroom have become the most used applications in classical guidance, while WhatsApp is the most popular application for individual or group …

This study aims to develop a peace guidebook as a medium for school counselors in reducing student aggressiveness. The research employed research and development design proposed by Borg and Gall model, which includes identifying aggressive needs and problems, drafting a hypothetical product, and expert and user assessment of the product. The data analysis technique used descriptive analysis to describe the level of aggressiveness. In addition, this study uses Cohens Kappa’s inter-rater reliability (IRR) coefficient to identify expert and user agreement on product feasibility. The purpose of this study was to determine family resilience based on the belief system in families with Javanese and Sundanese cultural backgrounds. The method used in this study is a qualitative phenomenological method. Phenomenological studies are used to understand phenomena at the level of subjective reality. Respondents in this study were five families with Javanese ethnic background domiciled in Kebumen and Banyumas regencies, Central Java and three families with Sundanese cultural background domiciled in Pangandaran and Sumedang regencies, West Java.
